friends I urge you to check out a site called Spokeo.com the information they make public is absolutely sickening, if you have children on the net, or just like to keep your personal information to yourself, then locate the site and make them remove youand your kids. This is not a rant, just a public service to those people I care about, all of you.

It's not an invasion of privacy.

It's a collection of information that you, yourself, have (knowingly or unknowingly) made public. If you don't want this information to be public then you should not: 1) Have a Facebook/Myspace/Twitter/LinkedIn/etc. account, 2) Fill out any form online without thoroughly reading the terms of service, which will include whether or not the form you are filling out is kept secure, 3) Visit any website that your frequently updated anti-adware/virus software warns you against.

If you are currently or have in the past done any of those things, then any information about you revealed by those actions is fair game to the internet public - aka everyone. If you don't want this information public, then attacking www.spokeo.com or any other site (peekyou.com, etc.) that collects information is not the answer - the solution is to fix the problem yourself and take care of the things I listed (and there are probably some things that I didn't even consider).

So stop considering how people are displaying your "personal" information, and start thinking about how they got it.

PS - I would be VERY interested to hear their response to your request for removal from their "service". Although they may honor this request out of professional courtesy, you can bet your bottom dollar that they will not destroy their records of your information, and they will sell it to anyone who asks.

After a little more research into the terms of service of both Spokeo and PeekYou, it appears that both publicly state that, at the request of any user, they will remove profile information from their search engine. However, both of these policies also make it abundantly clear that the information that they aggregate (their term, not mine) is gained through the use of public search engines. Therefore, anything that is on their site is stuff that, for better or worse, you have placed on the internet, and anyone can find. So yes, they'll remove your information. I maintain that they probably won't destroy their records of it, but regardless, even if you remove your information from their site, it is still available.

So, legitimately concerned about your privacy, and not just outraged at a collaborative database that contains an admittedly significant amount of information about you? Take the steps I mentioned, and do further research to learn how you can actually protect yourself, rather than flying off the handle about websites such as these.
