Answers, Theories, I want them.

So this is pretty messed up, but me and this chick were just talking utter bullcrap and somehow we got onto the topic of artificial insemination, and what would happen if you were to do this with mixed species.

For example, extracting semen from a Rhino and going through the process with, a horse for example. Do you think it's possible to actually inpregnant a female (in this case, a horse) with Rhino Semen, and what do you think would be the outcome?

This isn't a mockery or anything like that, it'll just settle some curiousty and who knows, some of these bright minds have some interesting theories.

K, go.

The highest known hybridization has occurred on an inter-family level. Going to inter-ordinal hasn't been possible.

For example: Two families of birds might be able to mate, but you'll never mate a bird and a bat, bird and a pig, or bird and a snake (the obvious way to get your own mini-dragon).

A better example would be within Mammilia, mice and monkeys are of a different Order. You couldn't mate these two.

However donkeys and horses are in the same order, family, genus, but not species. Thus, they are similar and can mate BUT produce sterile offspring.

I wonder what the effects of crossbreeding crossbreeds on a genetic level. I realize they are sterile, but I am sure you can still implant chromosomes with an egg. Mind you I am not a genetics major, but if they can grow a human ear on a mouse then they can prolly get some interesting things done. The real question? Is this something you want to see people do?

I'm just curious as to what the result would be with certain combinations. I wouldn't be against the experimenting side of it. It'd be interesting to see if it were possible.

What of a Rhino and Hypo, I'm not a expert but they seem to be somewhat similiar.

That word 'sterile' is poking holes in my imgination bubble though :(

Hippos and rhinos stand on four feet, and that's where the similarities end. They are in completely different orders and would have about as good of a chance of mating as you would have mating with a peacock. As for whether scientists should be crossbreeding and messing with genetics, I think this is a topic that walks a fine line between ethical practice and playing god for no other reason then they can. Just because something is possible, doesn't make it a good idea.
