Imoutgoodbye
I've been pondering it for a while and I keep hearing how the Senators and Congressman make way too much money. I've also always heard about "campaign finance reform" which I've never seen. I'm thinking that each person who makes it onto a ballot be given 2 ads to air, one per day, four times a week only. If the people TRULY want to be informed about who they're voting for then they can find out more information on their own. This should cut back some on the "need" for money in campaigns. Also, appoint them staff and only allow them to hire a small handful of campaign managers to help them personalize/train the appointed staff that are to be appointed by some judicial branch, similar to jury selection. Next, cut the salary/benefits of the bastards. Politicians should be representing the best interests of the community, so let them live like the majority of Americans. On less than 40k per year with limited health, dental, and vision benefits. By cutting the external rewards of the position we can attract the politicians who truly care about and want to serve the people. All government business (trips to the Capitol, etc...) must be approved by an oversight branch to cut back on ridiculous taxpayer costs. *wipes hands* Okay, my rough idea is all yours. Do what you want with it. I've got a ton of crap to get done today.

I read this as such: By cutting the external rewards of the position we can attract the politicians who don't have the training, education, or experience to handle the responsibilities required of the position. People who have that experience, training, and education will go to the private sector to thrive. Private sector positions that require similar pedigrees already offer higher compensation with greater control. The average Harvard Law grad may not understand the plight of the masses, but the average member of the masses couldn't possible understand the complexity of the public offices. That said, I'm very much pro-reform. Limit campaign expenses, require attendance (and force public-record voting on issues), actually limit lobby power. Pali
Personally, I'd love to see the imposition of term limits on Congress. And the pay of members of Congress is very, very small fries if your goal is budget balancing.
Imoutgoodbye
I cannot tell you how much I would love to take a crack at Michigan's budget. On the other side, I do see the point about the private sector. Which, sadly, is why we have teachers leaving the country to teach in other countries. The pay is better, they get treated better...and we have people like Governor Walker of Wisconsin saying that teachers aren't worth what they get. It just...grrr. People misunderstand tenure and the rise of student rights. All the lobbying has gotten to politicians common sense. Why drive good teachers away?! *innocently whistles* I swear I wasn't anticipating anyone responding in that manner so I could start my own "Know what grinds my gears" argument that is based off someone else's words.....*runs*
J.Twendrist
The politicians we have don't do anything that would require a specialized degree or anything. Often times they have their advisers and assistants read what they're supposed to (it was shocking how many senators actually read through the patriot acts and other bills). If they don't even do the reading themselves you cannot convince me that they have something special to offer. No, a better requirement would be someone tested on reason and logic and someone who can take a clear stance at dividing law/justice from moral teachings while at the same time retaining common sense. Also make those freaking senators and representatives sit next to each other instead of little groups of republicans and democrats. I can't tell you how many times teachers would say in the classroom, "you won't always get along with people in the real world but you have to accept them so I'm going to make you two quarrlesome youths sit next to each other to solve your problems". Edit: Also, look at these fools. They can't even pass a freaking budget which is like day one stuff. IMHO each of these people ought to be fired if they are that incompitant. Let's face it, how can you solve economic problems, healthcare, etc, if you can't even agree on what is actually necessary for the country and what is not. It is clear that they are much more interested in their political parties than the people that they swore to represent.
Pali
Edit: Also' date=' look at these fools. They can't even pass a freaking budget which is like day one stuff.[/quote'] Budgets are moral documents - and the simple truth is that our representatives do not share the same sense of morality. This is where the problem arises.
Elfrosto
I'm still a fan of the "Give Frosty a gun and give him a license to kill" plan of rectification.

samag08
These are complex issues and my time is very short atm so I simply post two thoughts unfortunately with little explanation. Btw, hi folks - Another route, although equally unpopular, would be to implement more tuition hikes so that the teachers pay might rise/remain the same. - Another note. I have always wondered if it is quite fair that congressmen and women live quite comfortable lives yet there is such a disparity in pay between those public servants and another batch of public servants being the military. One protects the rights and freedoms of the other while taking on much more risk for considerably less pay. I say tie the pay of congressmen to that of military men and women. Ok. folks, See you sometime in the future.
J.Twendrist
Well, if someone is getting paid 50 million a year to read lines off a script when teachers get paid nothing.. hmm.. I wonder what we should do? I'm all for paying people for what they earn, but as of right now the only actors in LA that earn what they have been paid are the poor guys on Jack@ss. Lets give the line reader (lets face it, movies aren't even acting.. go to the theater to see real acting) a chance to make it right and give him 25 million a year, huh? We are such saps for entertainment it's retarded.
