KRins
Seriously everyone... I am asking you to PLEASE dig a little deeper in the RP effort box than to use "I need your soul" as the basis for your actions. You don't have to tell me what your RP is... but seriously... a little originality will go a LONG way in improving your experience, the other players' experience, and just might create an environment interesting enough to bring in some new people. I just experienced some of this VERY played out RP, I recently had a friend leave because of the same thing (He was a D&D kid, said the experience was nowhere near worth the effort of learning the game), and quite frankly... we are better than that. The-Nameless
I would edit the top line out, it can easily be taken as calling someone out who uses that rp. In all honesty though sometimes RP is as simple as that. Ted Bundy was a psycho just to be a psycho. Hitler had deeper motives, but was no less a psycho. Buddhists are simple, and in the moment, while a catholic is not. I do feel that everyone should be trying their damnedest to exude RP out of every pore. I put it in quotes to more reflect that MANY of these one line RP motivations are shallow. "I'm purity and you are evil" "I felt like it" etc... all equally worthless. Bundy had more of a selective psychopathic nature than one would think. He didn't just stroll down the street and knife people for being there. I am fine with happened to me, because quite frankly... the fact it happened just gave me a good reason to focus back on my insurance course for the next few days like I should be. I am just tired of ANYONE using an incredibly thin veil to cover up "I just wanted to" to pretend to adhere to our RP enforced rules. If anyone takes it personally... I am not talking specifically to you, but the fact it irks you just might mean the shoe fits...
Pali
In all honesty though sometimes RP is as simple as that. Ted Bundy was a psycho just to be a psycho. Hitler had deeper motives' date=' but was no less a psycho. Buddhists are simple, and in the moment, while a catholic is not.[/quote'] There's a lot in this paragraph that I would take issue with. However, the overall point you are making is one I agree with - sometimes people do kill just because they enjoy killing, and sometimes they'll excuse it by claiming a greater agenda is their goal when it isn't... however, sometimes the greater agenda really is the goal and they don't enjoy killing but do it anyways and rationalize it to themselves - humans are weird that way. I do think that people too often discount the depth that can be found in simplicity. People don't always have complex motives behind all their actions - sometimes they just enjoy hurting things. That alone doesn't make the RP simplistic or wrong or even unoriginal - failing to expand upon the character in other ways would and too often is the case, and this is where people who want to make psycho killers should focus their efforts. You enjoy murder for its own sake? That's great! Just don't make it the ONLY aspect your character has - make her a smart ***, make him the quiet unassuming type, make her the bipolar bitch-queen who snaps the moment someone says something the wrong way. Give them something beyond the "I enjoy hurting stuff" - not because there's anything wrong with "I enjoy hurting stuff", but because real people have more to them than that - even the psychos.
