Balgashang
So I puked up a bunch of blood the other day, dunno why, neither do the doctors at the hospital I went to, of course do to no insurance, they only did blood work, no other tests. I don't drink alot, (maybe once or twice a month, and then its a beer or two) I quit smoking pot and other drugs over a month ago, been trying to clean out to get my cdl. Just came on me suddenly, puked like twice, then started puking blood. I've spent many nights worshipping the porcelian god, and never once did I vomit blood. Mali
I am not a doctor, but it is possible you have an ulcer or an internal condition that is causing blood to enter the stomach. If it continues, I would go to an ER, where treatment cannot be denied. In the meantime, I would eat very bland foods, including plain yogurt. Might be worthwhile to see a gastroenterologist(GI), insurance or not. Good luck man!
Imoutgoodbye
Any acid reflux when eating, anything else you can tell us about what happens a few hours before the vomiting?
Balgashang
Occasionally I'll get acid reflux, nothing real different up until the vomiting, been feeling a bit ill lately, and my girl definetly has had a stomach virus. Was sitting at the comp mudding, then just felt hella sick, logged, threw up twice, then started hurling blood, red at first, then all cogualated crap. Went to the E.R. and they said they didn't see any blood in my stomach (i threw up for the last time right infront of thier doors) they stuck some camera down my throat, which apparently scratched the hell outta it, kept me on an iv for like two days, did blood work, said they couldn't find anything wrong. Said I still got pot in my system, but like, thats never caused me to get ill before.
inscribed
buy health insurance? drink peptobismol too. it cures everything.
Imoutgoodbye
I got nothing. If they ran the cam...*shrug* You may need an acid inhibitor. It's the only thing coming to mind. My acid reflux became full blown GERD when I was 22. Even with insurance, I paid $59 or $69 per month for two months of these nice little pills that put my reflux back under control. Implementor Anume Posted May 29, 2011 Implementor Report Share Posted May 29, 2011 If it happens again get them a sample. Might be a bit yucky but it will help them to determine what is wrong. Also if it is possible you should get insurance now before you got more problems.
Elfrosto
Crohn's? Sounds like what i went through before i got diagnosed. Until you figure out otherwise, I'd stick to a brat diet. Bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. Avoid anything greasy, spicy, highly "fake", red meat and dairy. Keep mine in check for the most part, and I KNOW I have full blown crohn's and colitis. AVOID meds that will "quick take the pain"; ie OTC painkillers, maalox(do they still make that stuff?) and peptobismol. You dont want to mask the symptoms, or treat them, until you find out what is wrong. If it keeps coming up after changing your diet, talk to your doctor about crohn's disease. I had an endoscopy that came up negative, but my MRI came back REALLY positive.
Trick
Being a critical care medic and a firefighter, chances are you threw up so hard you scratched yourself. We get about 5-9 calls a weekend because of this. Either you had the flu or something underlying cause it. If it happens again, document and see the ER, if not, you're fine. Liadon Xiloscient
could be a number of things: Food Poisoning Stomach Virus You can actually stretch something out and injure your throat or even stomach from internal convulsions while vomiting. Worse case scenario it's what Frosty said or a tumor which you cannot see without a cam being shoved into your stomach.
-red-
Do NOT eat anything spicy, that promotes blood flow. Avoid anything that thins blood (like aspirin). Foods should be bland, slightly bitter, or sweet (no excess in either category). Check your stool and urine for blood. Check for unusual swelling (especially in your abdomen). Do you feel fatigued, weak or dizzy when not having one of these episodes? Edit: Obviously, avoid strenuous activities, especially those that involve use of abdominal muscles. The End
How much blood are we talking about here? 8oz? 16oz? lots? How much was thin and ruby red and how much was congealed? Were there clots already formed in the blood? (brown hard bits of blood) Do you take any type of anticoagulant? (aspirin, ibuprofin, cumidin or arginine) Do you take any stimulants? (anything that gives you energy outside of vitamins) Has there been any blood in your stool? Have you had any sharp pains when defecating? Any history of hemroids in the family? At this point if they scoped the stomach it wasn't an ulcer. There is a valve at the duodenum that prevents flow-back into the stomach and they would have seen any physical failure of that valve when they did the scope. You can get hemroids in the stomach but more than likely it was a failure on your stomachs part to rebuild a protective mucus layer. Also, the throat can tear and cause blood to flow into the stomach as a result of smoking which in your case is what I would assume happened. Harder to tell because the throat would be inflamed at that point anyway from all the vomiting. It also could have come from the lungs but that would have been much more painful. Answer those questions and if anything odd pops up in your answers go see a free clinic, not the ER. That is the worst idea ever. Don't waste their time when there are free or discounted clinics in every major city. If you don't have the money you can apply for state aid to get treated. GET HEALTH INSURANCE instead of buying pot. You can get some really cheap plans for less than 200 a month that give decent coverage.
Balgashang
Umm, you missed where I don't smoke :edit: POT or do drugs anymore, and actually the only state health care alabama has is disability, which will severely limit my future earning potential. Aside from all that, I appreciate your knowledge and questions. More like 6 oz bright red, and prolly another 10-12 oz congealed. They got at least 4 more ounces out at the e.r but said that was from them running the scope. No blood in stool. My lungs/throat felt like they were on fire, and lungs still hurt. No regular stimulants (drink cold drinks fairly frequently (regular soda) No real sharp pains going poo, and not that I know off. Apparently since I'm afib as well, my blood couaglates like that. They were taking blood and it was flowing real slow into the vial, and started clotting, so they switched to the back of my hand. the income based clinics around here also have a waiting list for new patients at about a month and half. Mali
He already said he quite smoking. I doubt that is the origin of his bleeding, in any case. Alcohol use and spicy food (And reflux) is probably more damaging to your throat and stomach then a bowl is.

I didn't miss it. A history of smoking is a 7 year backlog. When did you quit and how much did you smoke when you did? There are little fingerlike structures in your esophagus called cillia. Smoking affects these in the short term and kills them over time. As they start to grow back or die if you started smoking again they can bleed down into the stomach. Also, the bronchial tree can start to repair and you could have a blood vessel burst there. The lungs are very good at removing debris and it could end up in the stomach. Either way if they did the scope and saw nothing that's all they would do if you went to the ER. IF it happens again there is no need to get a sample because there will be plenty left inside the throat for cultures or analysis. Plus anything you collect would be contaminated beyond use. Get to the hospital as fast as you can. The amount of blood was probably less than 6oz total when you take into dilution and since you have more viscous blood than what is usual. Drink lots of water and cut out any extra sugar in your diet. If your lungs still hurt it could be a much bigger problem and if it doesn't go away after a few weeks you need to go in for a chest x-ray.
