Liadon Xiloscient
Sounds interesting, sounds un-noobie friendly 100%, and sounds like something I want to try despite what some may have said! SO HA! Anyone with any tips or hints for this class PLEASE hit me up on PMs. BTW: I love you.
H&R
A BMG can be quite the powerhouse as long as you remember to keep all your spells up. Fighting outdoors around noon, and you will make any ogre (or anyone else for that matter) cry with your searing beam.
The-Nameless
Here is the BEST bmg tip I can give you. Do not listen to ANY advice I have regarding bmgs.
Mmm Coffee
If you use zmud/cmud, I can give you a very effective/useful zmud database parsing script that will make spell upkeep aspect very newb friendly. It's a little old but I doubt much has changed.
mya
Good Avian, or Elf. Remenber you need to master a crapload of stuff to be PK efficient. And BMG are anti-Newbie due to spell unkeep. What you need to do is to learn to work with Zmud Triggers, Variables and the Status bar. And use the status bar to keep track of the status of your spell. My Battlemage as all spells in the Status Bar, telling me at all times if they are up or down. Custom AFFects thing in the mud also helps. Don't know if that was fixed or if it's still disabled. Kazimer
Here is the BEST bmg tip I can give you. Do not listen to ANY advice I have regarding bmgs. Actually you should be able to give a fair amount of advice... On what not to do... You regularly shredded my BMG every time we fought... I believe I took out a chunk of hit points only once during our battles...
Liadon Xiloscient
I think I can keep on the spell upkeep (for a newb) as practiced regularly with my Healers. The thought of being able to tear big scary people apart with a selct few spells drives my insides all crazy. *squirms*
bavarianbrew
When you dance, choose a partner that's heavy.
The-Nameless
Never fight while slowed. Try to time your fights to have 10 am - 2 pm as times your fighting outdoors. LOCATE GYVEL POTIONS. If you see they have few, or no ways to cure blindness, then Flashfire and thunderclap are going to do wonders for you.
Liadon Xiloscient
Well here's a hardcore newb question, why does the time of day matter? And what kind of weapons can they use? Are the restricted with what armor they can wear, and can they use any type of shield?
f0xx
I think I can keep on the spell upkeep (for a newb) as practiced regularly with my Healers. That is not the same spell upkeep people are talking about. The useful bmg spells draw from your mana when they are up i.e. you will be regaining very little mana or if you are a noob, you will actually be losing it. Bmgs have slow which grants you beastly mana regen, but has other downsides. Also, I personally woudnt listen to nameless"s suggestion to not use slow while you fight. jibber
Uh, it's a pretty good idea NOT to use slow in a fight (many factors make it so you get hit more often, in my experience). If you have +dex items to cover the -4 to dex from slow, go for the continuous slow, I guess. However, I found it much easier to defend, and HIT hardcore melees with a ****load of HR/DR when I was HASTED, or just simply, NOT slowed. And the time of day directly affects sear, a staple spell in the Battlemage's arsenal. At 11-3pm, it has a very high chance to blind, and a very high chance to be a very high damaging spell. I'm also inclined to believe that sear blind (from 11-3pm) has a level increase above level 50. I've failed to heal it 5 times in a row at a healer, before. mya
Never fight while slowed. Actually always be slowed almost 24/7. Get a bandit belt, werewolf belt to cover the Dex Penalty. Flight and a Mount for moves. Moves EQ also aids. The time of day thing. One of the BMG spell SEAR is more powerful at noon. Because it harness the power of the sun to sear your opponent. Only works in daylight with sun, ... well most of the times. 2 rounds lag spell and heavy mana 35-40 ??? Great opener as it has a high chance to Blind, especially at noon. Typicaly you will get ===Desintegrates=== at noon on Ogres. But there are many other unique spells.
The-Nameless
Mya, the spell slow makes you less defensive, not just the dex it actually harms your defenses.......
mya
That is a myth just like saving Trains for Pinacle. Haste affects offense by the number of attacks. It has zero bering on BMG defences and on normal meele defences.
Mmm Coffee
Just like most things in PK, it depends. It's not a good idea to use slow against an opponent who can lower your DEX or moves easily. Use it against high damage output classes that can't lower DEX/Moves easily (Paladins/Warriors/Zerks/Vokers/Monks/Rangers for example) Prob not a good idea to use against Ninjas/BLMs/Shaman Sequencer is your friend - learn how to use it effectively. There's no reason to have 100% of your spells up 100% of the time unless you go Savant and can deal with the drain.
Kyzarius
Never use slow while in combat. if you listen to Mya on this one, you will just die.
Croyvern
ALL of the spells for this class have their time and place. If I said it was unfriendly for a newbie, it would be due to the pressence of mind required to do well with it. Clerics and most melees have time for that "Doh!" moment, >Flee! Mages seldom have such luxory. These mages have neither Sanc or groupmates to save them. If your spells are down, you will be laid completely vulnerable. If you can keep track of the spells, the enemies, and the task at hand well enough, you can make a great name for yourself. Good Luck. PS Find a way to fly. mya
Never use slow while in combat. if you listen to Mya on this one, you will just die. What if you want to slow someone?
mya
Doh!! Moments for mages involve casting word of recall, many times while afected by dirt. So Master this spell to. And yes, a non spells up BMG is a very soon to be dead BMG. That is one of the reasons of the difficulties. A single dispel can turn a win into a crushing defeat. Even more if it's a Feral Discord Cleric.
Kyzarius
What if you want to slow someone? Never use slow on YOURSELF then go into combat. Always cancel slow before engaging, ESPECIALLY against a melee.
Mindflayer
slow cannot be cancelled, the only way around this is a certain cabal spell.. and I'm not allowed to tell you which one.
Twinblades713
Can't it be effectively cancelled with haste? I know there's a factor with timing, and that haste lasts longer so you end up hasted after your slow wears off... I dunno.
Mindflayer
That's a good point Twinblades... yes they would cancel each other. And the haste spell can be cancelled.
