Dark Souls

Mali

Re: Mali

Not far, still in the Asylum tutorial area. I haven't had much time to put into it because of a new job and my refusal to progress until I beat the asylum with the broken sword.

Re: Pali

So far loving it. The few gripes I had with demon souls are present...jittery dead corpse physics and screwy target lock on and camera view.

The graphics are amazing compared to demons souls. A new 'bonfire' checkpoint system is in place. Open world format compared to plane jumping format of its predecessor. Addition of player factions with skills, spells, pvp enemies based on faction and you a can turn into a dragon. Whats not to like?

yes yes yes

I love this game, beat demon souls like game ++++++, I love the new combat features, better graphics, better bad guys..

Dark Souls and Demon's Souls define dungeon crawl imo.

I have yet to find a game that makes me, as a long time game player, actually hesitate anymore. This game though, really sets the bar. You open some door, and stairs leading down into the darkness actually give you pause.

You can beocme a liche if you gather enough souls from alternate worlds using the grave creature you can send.

Just got it, beat the asylum area. I like the improvements I've seen so far, like no more white/black character/world tendencies. So far I've been leveling my character the same as in Demon's Souls, since it looks like the same strategies apply. Just need to find a spear now...

I had something like 14k souls when I found a remote chest that looked like it had something awesome in it. I opened it... reached in... and got my head chomped on by the aggressive mimic.

heh...reminds me of this time I was playing in a Ravenloft campaign...my poor dwarf warrior was having bad luck straight from the gates and at one point was around 14 or 15 hp (mind you, this is a dwarf warrior with 17 CON 2nd Edition Rules, at level 12), so my group actually takes pity on me and sits me in a chair in the dead king's bedroom (his body was on the bed, we were all thinking zombie)...lo and behold, the goddamn chair was a mimic. Too bad for it my armor was spiked.

Personally I think the games difficulty was a bit over-hyped. There are much harder games out there. That being said i think both titles are a must play. Im currently stuck playing the new MK, so fun. I would also like to suggest picking up the revamped versions of Shadow of the colossus and ico. Also a set of defining games in my opinion.

Dark Souls is heading to PC, for you folks that didn't try it out on console. Its including some new bosses, which will hopefully also be added to the console versions too. This was one of the best games I've ever played, so I'll definitely be looking to pick it up on PC as well.

Here is a trailer

Not sure if I will get it on the PC. Dark Souls was one of the best games I've ever played but the added content is too little for me to buy again.

Although people can mod the game and add expansions for the PC version....

Well regardless I'll wait for the rumored DLC for the console.

yeah those were the only pictures i could find at the time. here is the official site that just launched: http://www.preparetodie.com/en/

i'll buy it again just to support the developers. all of the new content should be headed to consoles as well.

New Bosses - Including Artorias of Abyss, Chimera of Tomb, and more

PVP Online Matchmaking System - Quick matching for co-op or PVP

New Areas – Including Oolacile Tomb, Old Ruins and more

New Enemies – Including Abyss Guard, Chained Prisoner and more

New NPCs – Including Hawkeye Gough and more

New Weapons and Armor – Equip some from the new bosses, enemies, and NPCs

sweet!

Though I love dark souls, to say its lore is something noteworthy is invalid. Dark souls lore is a complete clusterf*ck of a mess composed of different ideas by different people that are not tied together. The lead developer even said he was shocked on how much attention the story was getting and was embarrased because they didnt bother too much with story elements and tried to focus on level design and gameplay in a japanese interview.

Maybe they will try to redeem themselves with this new version and actually solidify some of the story elements.

If Skyrim had an ounce of the lore that this game has' date=' it might of been worth playing![/quote']

And you'd know because... you've never played Skyrim? ;)

No offense, man, but I've played a bit of Dark Souls... and Skyrim's got it beat to hell when it comes to lore (as do the other Elder Scrolls games). Dark Souls has incredible combat, certainly better than that in Skyrim in many respects - but its storytelling leaves a lot to be desired.

Yeah, Skyrim has like 100x the lore that dark souls.

Even the side quests are more flushed out than the entire game.

That being said, dark/demon souls has the best combat engine for RPG's lately, if only we could get a skyrim scale game with dark souls combat.

re: below

Maybe I should of compared quality of lore instead of quantity of lore. :)

The lore in Skyrim, as the author points out, is cardboard deep and comes across as if it was copied out of a cheap fantasy novel and tacked on to the game as if it was a checklist requirement for the game to be called an "RPG". The lore in Dark Souls is an actual part of the game, and is embedded in the environments, item descriptions, and NPCs. Its up to the player to decide how deep they want to explore the game's details to discover that lore. As players of MUDs, its something we should be able to appreciate more than other gamers, as the lore in FL is presented in much the same way (outside the occasional RP plot). As I've said before, the gameplay of the Souls games are the closest I've seen to MUD gameplay (PVP especially) being accurately represented in a graphical game, with regards to the very rewarding exploration, the presentation of the lore, the discovery of quests, the depth of the combat, the variety of customization/equipment, and perhaps most importantly, the threat of another player attacking you at any time or place, and the ensuing fight taking place over entire areas, with lots of running and no-holds barred tactics.

I also think that article is wrong. It treats any moment in a game where you're not pushing buttons as a moment where you're not gaming, and therefore any exposition or storytelling during that time doesn't actually count as storytelling - therefore Dark Souls has better storytelling. I disagree completely with that analysis - I do not think that cutscenes take away from gameplay, nor do I think spending time chatting with other characters in the world takes away from gameplay. If you think so, that's fine, but that's a purely aesthetic judgment call over how lore is presented by a game, not an objective judgment on how much lore a game contains overall.
