Another computer question

ok so my old lap-top tore up, got to where it wouldn't turn on, took it to a computer shop and dude was tellin me it would cost 100 bucks to fix it. apparently where the power cord goes into the computer, broke, and it would need to be welded back or whatever. He was wanting to trade my hp pavillion for this comp I've never heard off, a MPC transport T3100 with windows 7, but no java installed, like the fl client for example won't work. This thing only has 1gb too, and he wants to trade my hp for it and 100 bucks. I don't happen to recall the specs of that comp, its been broke for so long, but I know it was an older laptop too. So basically, is this a semi-decent deal, or am I getting totally screwed with no lube? Like I had a wireless card for my hp, and this mpc has built in wireless, and a fingerprint turn on deal, which sounds neat, but I dunno, seems kinda like just a bell and whistle more so then anything else.

Don't do it.

explain to me what you mean by the chord being "broke". Are you talking like, the laptop's plug thing is broken? Is it replacable with, say, another power supply that might be cheaper?

computer tech shops will never offer you a deal that is in your interest to take.

where the power cord plugs into the computer, the piece -inside- of the computer broke loose, apparently. 1gb ram, I know its not alot, but its a 10yr old laptop, and all I do is mud/watch netflix. I wanna say my old one had about 1gb ram too, maybe 2 gb

So it sounds like either

A: The connector that plugs into your laptop to supply power broke off, which if you look at the cable would be easily determinable, or

B: The connector on the motherboard inside the laptop has come loose, in which case it would need to be soldered back together.

If it is A, the solution is actually pretty simply, you will need a needle nose pliers and/or a tweezers to pull out the broken connector and buy a cheap replacement.

If it is B, do you have any experience soldering? If not, you may want to consider the deal offered. Make sure before you take that computer that it turns on, runs, and can connect to the internet. You can just download and install java to run on it, as Java is freeware.

Hopefully this helps.

Hard to say without seeing the specs for both computers. At the very least I'm sure you could haggle for more $ than the 100 the guy offered. I'd also be worried about the comp he wants to give you having some other problem he's not telling you though...

This.

Also. Live near a college that has votech courses? Sometimes going in and finding a teacher/advanced student and saying 'Hey, I really need some help with this, I can't solder.' can pay off bigtime.
