Description Help

I, personally, disagree. Sounds should be perfectly acceptable. And even some movement as well. If an avian is flying, he isn't just "hovering", wings will be moving to provide lift, etc. In real life you don't ever look at someone and take a snap shot. Every memory you have of someone they are DOING something.

Mobs do not adhere to this rule in their descriptions, why should players be forced to? I have written countless descriptions and received praise on all of them. My most recent, received a dragon and had movement in it. I never liked the constriction placed on it. I do agree that players should not say how powerful they are.

As for scary, you have a selection in bio to label them as scary, why not say it in your description as well?

You can't hear with your eyes. You have emote/say/tell/cc/cb/cs all for sounds. If you want talk about how awesome the riffs sound on your guitar, the point, I believe, would be better made by emoting different sounds coming from the guitar you play, in game. Especially when the guitar in your desc is slung across your back, which is how most players will describe things. The instrument hangs there, or the sword is sheathed, but rattles loudly when its drawn.

As for saying something is scary (alot of people that fall into the 'too short of a desc' catergory go with his face is scary. Whats scary about it, I ask? I think a scary face would be better described as horribly scarred, oozing boils pepper the skin on thier face, etc. Also another person that looks on a horribly scarred individual, might feel pity, instead of fear, for that person.

As for why there isn't sound/movement allowed in descriptions, a picture frozen in time, I'm not sure. I know help description really hasn't changed since I started playing, I suppose its how Virigoth wanted to see people's descs.

And yes, some admins approve things others won't, because at the end of the day, its a matter of opinion, most of time, with grey areas like sound/movement, there isn't always a higher ranked admin around to check with, and take into account we -try- to get descs approved as quickly as possible. I would agree with you, Trick, that if your description is of a faerie in flight, then describing the manner in which they hover off the ground is fine, and could even be necessary, a bit of sound might be good, since you're describing a creature in flight, the hum of wings as they flutter, etc.

-I- think, that the sound thing comes back to making people feel things as well. You ever hear someone that swears up and down they sound like mariah carey when they sing, and when you hear them, you think yoko ono? Sound can be opinion too. The music sounds beautiful, is your opinion. The music is loud, again, could be opinion, could be fact, but its much easier I think to agree on whether something is loud or not, compared to agreeing on an area thats so open to individual interpretation, like beauty.

My main point, and I should have clarified, if the character in the description is standing, describe him as standing, don't go (description of him standing) but if you happen to see him flying, then this happens.

As for mobs, you're right, mobs don't follow the rules we players (those on staff still have morts, we're required too, so we're subject to approvals just like everyone else, and I happened to get stuck in the description room for a couple of rl days, cause I was sleeping and didn't realize I had gotten transfered) have to. Alot of mobs need to be reworked, and descriptions changed, etc. But its alot of work ( I think, I'm still learning to build), and something I hope to rememdy once my training project is completed, which I hope you guys will enjoy. Actually, from my limited understanding of this type of code, it might be fairly easy to fix a mobs desc, but there's ALOT of mobs in the game.
