Mister E
Darnit! My computer was working fine last night and when I got home from work today and went to turn it on it fired up as usual but the screen remained black. I have no idea why it suddenly did that or what is wrong with it but until I get the issue resolved I won't be able to MUD seriously. I hope I can get this fixed ASAP! If anyone can offer any advice I am very open to it, thanks.
jibber
Did you turn off your computer safely? As in, turn it off via Start->Shutdown or whatever else is required to safely shut it down? Most laptops mount their hard drives as they boot up, and unmount them as they get turned off. I've had it happen to me where my computer would try and start up and then try to mount a volume that was already mounted, and wouldn't start (after running diagnostics on it). Mister E
I shut it down normally. My fan has been acting up lately, i wonder if my laptop is overheating and if that caused something?
jibber
What kind of computer is it? When you start it up, does it go through the boot screen, or does it not even boot up? Does the black screen come after it tries to load your OS? Can you load the hard drive in an external case?
Akoz
If it stayed black with nothing on it from the start, try holding a flashlight to the screen at an agnle and see if you see anything. If so, its the back light went out, sometimes its just the cable coming lose from the mb others its the whole screen.
electroglyph
What make/model is it? There were a whole bunch of faulty laptops some years back with nvidia video cards that would overheat and self-destruct. more likely backlight though or it got disconnected from mb as Awendris said. You should try connecting it to an external display if possible.

The-Nameless
flip your laptop over, take any RAM chips out of the system then try to boot it up, let me know if it "beeps" at you. If it does beep, thats a good sign because your system is posting properly, and the beep code is a diagnostic tool (in this case you know its a beep code signifying a problem with your RAM chip(s). If it does not......
