Imoutgoodbye
So, I'm driving to class this morning, and I finally catch it happening. Seen it in from the corner of my eye a few times: My speedometer goes from 70 m.p.h to 60 m.p.h. without me taking my foot off the gas and the "catches" and goes back to 70. When this happens I feel no difference in the car. No shifting feeling. No feeling of power loss. I just see the speedometer needle go down and up. Now, this is a '93 Chevy Cavalier, 4 cylinder, 4 door, if that helps anyone diagnose. It makes a heavy whining sound under the hood whenever the engine is running. Water pump was replaced two years ago. Tension pulley and housing was replaced shortly after that (literally disintegrated from the spring busting out) and the alternator was replaced December 2010. The-Nameless
I recommend having your transmission checked. Your speedometer sits on the drivers side of your trans. Usually variations on your speedometer be it speed not properly registering, or your speedometer not accurately measuring acceleration, or your speedo not maintaining proper speed at all times during travel. Also is your check engine light on?
Imoutgoodbye
Do you know vehicles that old where the check engine light isn't constantly on?
Kyzarius
heavy whineing is sometimes a belt slipping... you might want to find which before it snaps on you when your out in the middle of nowhere. Slipping causes excess friction, which can melt through a belt. Often times though, whineing like I imagine your explaining, is the result of either a belt slipping or the feared transmission bearing going bad...The problem is, as nameless pointed out, that your speedometer is probably a symptom of transmission problems, and your whining could be transmission problems and when everything points to the transmission... The-Nameless
if your check engine light is on, go to autozone and borrow their OBD II (two) computer, under the steering wheel by your right knee is a plugin, plug in the computer and it will show you a list of codes. Write those down, and do a google search on them. Those codes will tell you if sensors, relays, or pressure is down anywhere. Your undoubtedly going to have 0-2 sensor errors in any chevy product, so those are not going to be critical when you look them up. Please let me know what that turns up. Bimpni
If its the transmission you can replace it yourself, at least, prolly be out 300 bucks for a rebuilt one. Ones I replaced weren't that bad, just 2-3 bolts was all. Might need to unbolt part of the exhaust too for extra wiggle room, depending on how it is on the underside
The-Nameless
The trans on a cavalier is not too hard. 6-7 bolts for the bell housing, then pull both control arms on each side, pull the axle arm, and the half shafts, make sure the car is off the ground on a lift, or good jack stands, then the trans should just fall out. It is not hard, just confusing if you have no mechanical inclination.
inscribed
From how you describe the problem, I really doubt its a major mechanical problem like a tranny or clutch. Pull sensor codes, replace sensors as required, and see if it fixes your problem. Check to make sure you don't have any partially broken electrical wires that could be intermittently grounding. Go to www.rockauto.com to pick up any sensors that are bad, they have great customer service and their prices are typically much better than you'll find in a local Autozone or O'Reilly's. Also, spend some time on forums dedicated to your car, you'll no doubt find threads started by other owners who have had similar problems. After a quick google search, I found these: http://www.chevy-forum.net/Chevy-Cavalier-Forum-f105.html http://www.clubcav.com/forums/index.php
