Celerity
I just wanted to say that my recent paper in discourse linguistics was accepted to be published! The fun part is that I used MUDs as an example of the evolution of online discourse. Although this is not the real title, the effect is similar: Multiple Context Fluidity in an Emerging Semi-Synchronous Modality Who said that this game doesn't have real life applications? Way to go gamers for being on the forefront of yet another field.

Imoutgoodbye
Wtf... It's discourse specific...the way we talk, so you don't have to! (understand, that is).
Celerity
A fancy way to say that there are multiple simultaneous, flexible communicative contexts in (this type of) communication that are neither asynchronous (delay: letters, email) or synchronous (instant: voice chat)---like MUDs, where you are in constant contact (synchronous) but not constantly communicating (somewhat delayed). Texting is similar, but has a somewhat different set of rules than what I'm focusing on. My main point is that MUDs (objective-driven) evolved from chatrooms (communication-driven), just as application-based social networks (objective-driven) evolved from communication-driven social networks, and all of this is a function of being able to handle fluid contexts. Modality just means a channel of communication, like voice chat, email/letter, etc.
