cussing in game??

I got slayed for saying Okay once many years ago as it wasn't in the 'medieval theme'.

I was also given a pineapple for having a scientist type RP to one of my characters. Someone go slay the gnome scientist for that. :) I think the IMMs nowadays are a little more lax however. I don't know if that means swearing goes though :D

I'm not a big fan of cussing in general. There are many ways you can be insulting and course - if RP dictates - without resulting to slurs. That said, some cussing is fine so long as it's done tastefully. As was mentioned, some forms of modern curses are alright, and others simply wont fly. S--t has been a word used for a long time, though s--te would be better in my opinion.

The more offensive words, like the f-bomb, shouldn't be used at all in my view, not only because it's questionable RP but also because it can be very offensive. Remember that we're playing a game, and there's a difference between using curses as color and using them to be hurtful.

My point is that you can achieve the same result without the curses by being a little creative. For instance;

'F--- you, you worthless a--hole!' can be better expressed with something like; "Listen close you useless son of diseased harpy. If you do that again I'll stuff your head down the wrong end of a nexus abomination. I'll toss you in a vat of illithid mucus and let the slimeballs have their way with you. I'll Find a new and interesting use for Efuzan's light sword and I'll scatter what remains as compost for the WATCHERS to piss on whenever they damn well please!'

Oh my. Volg. True talent, sir. Hilarious.

And I totally support this idea. Not only will it keep better rp, no swearing keeps flaming downdown. In a game most of us already take way too seriously, swearing will be bad.

And personally, I like to avoid swearing in general. Including rl. I think making swearing a common issue will really detract for me p

ersonally. Partially ruins my escape.

I always hear people say this mud is PG-13, but truthfully in practice it isn't. It's PG or G.

PG-13 can have a lot of cussing, and can include 1 F-bomb. I've never dropped an F-bomb in-game and a lot of the time that I'll cuss, someone will cry about it in-game.

> cusses

> "Don't do that, this mud is PG-13, cussing doesn't happen in fantasy-based PG-13 stuff." lolol

> "There's cussing in PG-13, and yes it does. Game of Thrones."

> and I actually got told this: "Game of Thrones isn't historically accurate."

> And FL is.

I think if you want to cuss? Cuss. An Ogre Berserker in Warmaster is a lot more likely to do it than a faerie invoker in Knight. This game is PG-13 and is always in-character, so if your character would cuss, then do it. Just make it a point not to drop F-bombs or N-words or the like.

As far as the "kids play this" statement is concerned: No, not really. We're all adults except for a very, very small amount of minors. In conclusion, if the imms want no cussing, say it's G. Until then I'm going to continue to play characters that cuss and urinate on things and other socially unacceptable behavior - because I'm roleplaying an evil demon-worshipping murderer, and not cussing is preeeeeeeeeeeetty low on the priority list.

tl;dr - If imms want G, let's make it G. If it is PG-13, PG-13 has cussing.

I've had two characters that were particularly distasteful and never got spoken to, even when interacting... with imms.

Kumspytch, my feral thief Gladiator. Even her name is offensive. She would literally scratch her infected crotch, grab people by their balls, try to F- anything and everything, wore a thong (Those exist in FL?!?!) I wanted to see how far I could get. I remember having a nasty relationship with Skwizgarr, it was hilarious.

I forget the name, but I had a duergar cleric I think... everything he said was belligerent and openly offensive, but it was clearly all the character. I felt I didn't get scorned because it was IG-wise, and never reactionary to something myself as a player should be upset. He was also racist to... everything. Ex:

"Dun wanna hunt? What'r ya some kinda goddamn a**h***? Busy being slung and put in by a Fire Giant 'r what?"

"How the funk am I s'posed to know all yer stupid goddamn names. Not like yer sh**es gonna get anywhere with your sad sh**e lives 'n piss poor performances."

My favorite was "Get stuffed [by an ogre/FG/etc]" Easily replacing get f*cked in meaning and sliding by being a nasty duergar. :D

And that small amount of minors should dictate the rating of the game. Games and movies are dictated on their audience, if that audience includes those that fall within a PG-13 rating, then that makes the game PG-13. Seems pretty clear to me.

Reason for Edit: Unintended hostility could be read in it.

I completely disagree. Engineering the norm around an incredibly small minority is the wrong approach for anything. Stopping my duergar drunkard from cussing on the off-chance that it might be a bad example for a minor in a game almost exclusively played by people 18+ is asinine.

And games' and movies' ratings are decided independent of the reality of the age of the audience. How many -millions- of children under 18 play M rated games.

The game wasn't engineered for 18+. It happens to maintain a larger adult crowd than not, that is because we've simply stuck around. Is it necessary to use profanity in the game? No. Why? Because there are more creative ways to get your point across, like everyone else has said.

I probably have the worst mouth out of anyone here. Every other word in any sentence is commonly F. This is mainly due to the crowd I am constantly associated with - firefighters and soldiers. It's common practice and I often feel awkward in public settings when the words come out. Why take that chance of negatively affecting someone when we don't need to?

The point is it's not going to be changed. I can not see the IMM Staff making a change in May that reads: Profanity in game is now an acceptable form of RP.

Change log: May

[05-01-2012] A filter has been installed to replace all forms of profanity with socially acceptable counterparts. S--- will now be 'flowers', b---h will now read as 'puppy', and the dreaded f-word will now be 'Mindflayer.' Enjoy your time with the Forsaken Lands.

I'm pretty sure it got the pg-13 rating, due to the violence aspect of the game. That ninja did just wrap his arms around your throat, and put the sleeper on you just enough to stand back and shove a spear through your torso. That monorod did give you an injury, where now you're spurting blood every so often, enough to the point, its easy to track you because I see pools of your blood marking the direction you just left.

So, I think its -impossible- to rate this game, as G, and it still be FL. Like you said Valsgarde, some cussing is acceptable for a pg 13 rating. In real life, I hang with a similiar crowd to trick (soldiers and construction workers) so I drop the F-bomb alot in conversation, as a noun, verb, and an adjective.

To allow cussing to the point of modern day language, or even 1 f-bomb...I mean, how would you regulate that? One person per day can drop 1 f-bomb, 1 f-bomb per character? It would get out of hand so fast, its easier to say, try not to curse, or if so, do it in an 'flish' manner.

Personally though, I agree with you 100 percent Valsgarde, but the thing is, the majority of society does not think like us, so its up to us, to 'follow the rules' and function with guidelines set by the masses, or go join Valek on the mountain with his chicken. And I really want no part of Valek, and especially, Valek's chicken. ;P

People get rich all the time milking the I'm an idiot you need to watch out for me. Anyone remember the lady that bought 'hot coffee' from a mcdonalds, decided the best place to sit her 'hot coffee' was between her legs as she drove, then became a millionaire just because...she didn't know spilling something that a short time ago was boiling water, would be painful, and possibly cause injury to her self? I really could go on a several page rant about all the stupid accommendations we make for other people's feelings, in todays 'politically correct world' but it'd be far off topic at that point.

So in short, its like pretty much everyone in this thread has said, the stance on cussing isn't going to change. But if you're not dropping the f bomb, the n word, and other similiar cusses, but your characters curse in a 'flish' manner, then keep on doing what you're doing.
