Diablo III

RPG simply means to make character development choices Pali.

That being said, I've seen Counter Strike + Warcraft mods that allow you to pick skills. I don't really consider those games RPGs because the FPS element in them is too strong.

RPGs are more about tactical build of your character, distributing skills, choosing which skills to dedicate to your available slots and so on.

Again, that being said, the new diablo seems quite dumbed down from the previous version, but I have not advanced that much to make comments on character builds yet.

I honestly find it alot more advanced then the previous. So many skill combo/rune choices to be made im like arrrggghh

Oh BTW for anyone playing be sure to use ELECTIVE option in your options.

You will thank me :)

That allows you to put skills from same tree on different slots right?

Was trying to remember what the option was called. Thanks.

EU servers go live in 4 hours 30 minutes. I'm all installed, settings sorted and just waiting to login. Got my red bull, mini fridge in my bedroom with microwave pepperoni pizzas (and a block of feta cheese to throw on top - gourmet!) and brought the microwave and some plates up.

The anticipation is killing me! Ha, I'm such a loser...

Just because a game has skill choices and is fantasy based it does not make it an RPG. Just because someone can choose to act out a certain role, does not make the game (or chat room) they are doing it in an RPG.

I think most games that call themselves RPG's are actually just fantasy action games where role playing may or may not be an option. I never saw Diablo as an RPG, heck even the Elder Scrolls series to me is not an RPG.

RPGs are more about tactical build of your character' date=' distributing skills, choosing which skills to dedicate to your available slots and so on.[/quote']

Traditionally, yes - still, I consider that tradition a very flawed one. However, by this same definition, Diablo 3 fails to qualify, as you do NOT make even choices along a skill tree - you simply are unlocking new abilities as you go and alter what is, essentially, your current weapon set-up.

"What is a Role Playing Game? Personally' date=' I like to define a Role Playing Game as a game that MUST, ABSOLUTELY have three elements. One is a statistical setup for characters that describe certain skills/aspects of that character. Two, it must have some method of increasing and strengthening those statistics (usually but not necessarily by way of the experience/level system). Three, it must have a menu-driven combat system that utilizes the skills/aspects of the characters. Given there are other elements of RPGs that I'll leave out because of their obvious nature, these are the elements that are required for a game to be labeled RPG." -RPGFAN[/quote']

And in this entire definition of what makes something a role-playing game, I have to ask: where is the role playing? Stat distribution choices do NOT qualify as role playing to me, sorry, even if lots of games are called RPGs simply because they incorporate such. Is Saints Row 3 an RPG because you gain respect (exp) and have a number of abilities that unlock and you can buy as you level up? Is Call of Duty's multiplayer an RPG because you gain exp and unlock perks that you choose from?

Now, I was talking primarily about single-player games, not multiplayer. Many MMOs are capable of being role-playing games by my reasoning, but not if you are essentially playing them alone (SW:TOR is a bit of an exception here) or if you aren't actually role-playing - a factor that is apparently not part of what makes something a role-playing game.

You're just annoyed that I'm right about Diablo 3 not even meeting your definition of RPGs. ;)

Well yes, but then again no game except FL meets them.

And yes, you are right that D3 is probably closer to hack'n'slash with RPG elements.

I'm on Act 2 nightmare, level 38 Demon Hunter. Seriously need to start bumping up my MF as my loot drops are awful, but only just reached Act 2 so I'm hoping the extra clevel will help in getting some higher level EQ - Act 1 was still dropping high 20/low 30 eq.

Loving it so far. It's so shallow and so fun, and can't wait for PvP. What do you guys think?

You gotta argue about everything Pali? I don't even like reading threads you post in because it seems like you're always arguing some point. Let it go brotha.

I'm not your brotha, guy!Park>

And seriously, Trick - two posts on the subject after others were already discussing it counts as me starting arguments?

I don't dispute the reputation at all - if I think someone is wrong, I will say so and explain why, and I want to be treated the same way. I find it sad how few people think this way. However, I do dispute the label of devil's advocate - I almost never argue positions I do not hold. In this case, to call something that includes no role-playing a role-playing game is a long-standing dispute I have had with the video game industry's labeling practices. ;)

Hey! I don't have a computer that can run Diablo 3. Pick me!

Blizzard is the only studio out there that optimizes its games quite well. You will find that Diablo 3 is quite light for the content it offers.

@Dey: You're quite aheads, seems like someone's been playing a lot :P

Also, I heard that good item drop rates have drastically been lower in D_3 and that doesn't surprise me at all too, due to the new action house that allows item trade for real money, and Blizzard snitching 15% of every trade.

[edit] Dey, I heard D_3 has a special unicorn and teddybear level you might like :)

Surprisingly so. I started out with my settings pretty low as my rig's far from cutting edge, and all I've done since is ramp them up and I've had no problems. Have nearly everything on high and it runs beautifully.

The only thing I hate about this game, and it's not a small one, is the fact that you need connection to even play solo.

I am absolutely disgusted about this restriction

Yeah, but do you recall what happened in Diablo I and II when the dbase and character files where on the client side?

Absolute hacked mayham.

Here they are trying to have an official cash based auction house. You cant do that if your clients can all dup items and load item drop hacks.

That being said, it is your fault this fetaure even exists Foxx. You claimed to have hacked the game rather than bought it. Well people hacking the game was blizzards reason for the server side login requirements.
