P_body
Had a marketing interview today. They asked me about how comfortable I was with HTML and a program they used called MailChimp. I told them I wasn't a programmer or "Tech Geek" (meaning I am not an expert) but that I could learn new programs relatively easily. The three that were interviewing me started spouting off that they didn't think I was a tech "geek," becaus that would require me to stop bathing (I didn't shower that morning before my interview), I would have to play video games in dark rooms (I almost never play video games with more than a lamp on if anything), and stay up all night doing online gaming (I didn't shower that morning because I was up until 4am on FL)....I just bit my lip and smiled and nodded...all the time realizing that--dunDunDUN!!--I was a geek.... How did this happen?!

Imoutgoodbye
I was referring to a transvestite. Proper term now is transgender. Transvestite has been deemed a slur.
Demiterracotta
Is it sad I spent more time wondering what they charge for red bull there than I did looking at the girl in the picture? And I don't even like Red Bull.......
Evangelion
Proper term now is transgender. Transvestite has been deemed a slur. Inaccurate. A transvestite and a transgender individual are two completely different things. Transgender = Someone whose gender identity does not conform to the culturally normative aspects of their sex (Note the differentiation in the usage of gender and sex). Transvestite = Someone who dresses as though they were a member of the opposite gender. Being a transvestite is a practice. It is possible to be both a transvestite and transgender -- they are not mutually exclusive. That said, they are two entirely different classifications. Imoutgoodbye
My information is coming from GSA, Transspectrum, and LGBTQ groups located regionally in my area. If you lived in my corner of the world, I am correct. I am also aware of the difference between sex and gender, having recently received my developmental psychology endorsement towards my degree. Evangelion
I won't argue that transvestite is a term that has fallen out of favor because of derogatory use; however, I would not agree that you are "correct" in so much as transgender becoming a replacement -- primarily because they mean two entirely different things. And I think your GSA, Transspectrum, and other LGBTQ groups would agree with me on that.
Pali
Your corner of the world has a problem with definitions, then.
Imoutgoodbye
There is a fine line between transgender and the art of cross dressing. It lay simply in where one wants to go and what one thinks one is. Either way, I was informed when I used the term transvestite at a GSA meeting that the word is no longer used and the term transgender now incorporates that practice. I'm not just digging information. I spent last year working closely with some of these groups as a resume builder and because they are denied equal rights at campuses throughout Michigan (by equal rights I refer to discrimination and protection under campus law). I swear I am not attempting to argue what the rest of the world may or may not think, it's simply the movement in my area.
Pali
I'd say there's a significant difference between cross-dressing and being transgendered. Conflating the two makes little sense to me (if only because I've known a number of cross-dressers who don't change their gender identity - they just like cross-dressing). Imoutgoodbye
I can't hear anyone over the sound of Eddie Izzard. It must just depend on how you want to see it and what words you want to pick.
Pali
That's an example that actually makes my case, though... Eddie Izzard does not identify as transgendered, he identifies as a transvestite and as a male. While I agree there should be a degree of leeway when it comes to self-identification, that identification is still only understandable if we're all in agreement as to what the words we're using mean. P.S. I am, however, in full agreement that Eddie Izzard is more manly than Justin Bieber.
