Something Near and Dear...

Hey man...I don't really care for you or even like you, but that is one thing I consider to be extremely FUBAR. Being a soldier in the world's greatest military, I can tell you first hand I have met and befriended some of the most courageous soldiers and warriors our fine country has to offer that are gay. It sickens me to think that the boy scouts, a group that is honored and full of patriotic spirit, would discriminate because of your sexual orientation.

I don't think highly of the boy scouts or eagle scouts. This is more than likely due to ignorance and my general ******* personality, but none-the-less, if our military is capable of accepting gay and lesbians as part of our military, then surely a group like the boy scouts can.

Despite that, you have worked extremely hard and put in a lot of time and effort into this. It is something you enjoy and love. I respect that greatly. I don't discredit what the organization does for our youth and you a part of it.

I am truly sorry that you are forced to experience this due to something so minor as sexual orientation. It is truly horrific that in our society people are so often discriminated against because of things so benign. Race, religion, and sexual preference...

I commend you on your bravery my man. Through the years I have seen how proud of the scouts you were. I know this had to be one of the toughest things you have had to do. I am sure everyone on this forum will agree when I say you have a huge support system right here if need be. I hope one day the scouts as well as other organizations realize that discriminating on this level. I am not going to say too much more on this but know I high fived you in my head.

I actually didn't know the BSA held this stance before I read this post.

They're not fans of nonbelievers either.

Kudos to you, Evangelion, for renouncing your allegiance to such a group - such an act is nowhere near as simple as many people might think it is, and I have sincere respect for it. I am glad you took away the good parts of the Scouts rather than the bad.

In light of this "God" thing in their bylaws, there's no way in hell I'm letting my son join the Boy Scouts. I was excited about signing him up, knowing it would be fun (have a few friends that are Eagle Scouts, my parents could never find the money for me to join somehow), but I'm not letting anyone brainwash my son.

Way to stand up, man, way to stand up.

All things aside, being a boy scout can and will teach your boy some very useful things which will help him immensely later in his life. Yes, we have boy scouts here too, although it's much more like watching a group of boys doing what Bear Grylls does best, minus the heavy drinking.

That being said, a good letter Bali, I doubt someone will care unless you decide to blow it all over the internet, which you probably should.

A very good friend of mine is a pretty intense Atheist. Me, being a pretty intense Christian(now), causes us to get into many heated debates, which are always a good time because we grew up as the greatest of friends and would never let it get in our way. My buddy has a son and I a daughter, and he sends his son to a Christian school. He does not exempt his son from Christian classes, even though he holds every right to do so. His answer to me was that regardless of the 'label' on the product, it's what is inside the product that determines its worth. If his son is learning good morals, respect, love, kindness, humility, and in the Scout's case, probably how to work hard, work as a team, survive, bond, grow relationships, judge character, and I am sure the list goes on, than it would only be a disservice to his child, as well as other children, to limit them from joining/going because of a label. Just some food for thought when I saw the post.

Institutional discrimination against gays is not a "label"' date=' and is a perfectly valid reason to keep one from sending their child somewhere. All the good lessons the Scouts teach can be learned elsewhere as well.[/quote']

He is a gay, not a pedo... why would you be worried for your child?

Personally I think the situation your in is the absolute definition of discrimination. Preventing someone a position based on sexual orientation is medieval at best.

Im sorry your experiencing this first hand, it obviously meant alot to you to be an eagle scout (I never went past boy scout, and only shortly after I became one). For you to be persecuted for a choice that has no influence on your ability to perform your duties is, I can't even generate a word for it. If you know of any petitions, or legislature that requires signatures to generate a following to have this ammended, or pressure them to ammend it, please let me/us know. I don't know about anyone else but I will happily sign my name to such a list. So sorry Steve, I can't effectively express the frustration I have for your situation.

Wow, man. I have the utmost respect for the bravery it takes to do such an act. You worked nearly your entire childhood for the honor of Eagle, and to give it up in the way you did and for the reason you did takes major courage.

I'm a devout Christian and a big fan of the scouts. A few of the youth I work with earned their Eagle, and the character-building aspect is immeasurably effective. I think it's a fantastic organization. However, their stance on gays is, like everyone else said, medieval and ignorant.

Many times, the basis for this type of anti-gay stance is Biblical. And, Biblically, homosexuality is immoral. However, the entire basis of the religion is that we as human beings are separated from God by sin. We will do immoral things, and because God realizes this, He offered a way to be forgiven: believing on Jesus Christ. (This is obviously oversimplified for the sake of time, space, and non-derailment.) Under a Christian standpoint, which I think the Boy Scout's hold, you can't take some parts (anti-gay) and not others (forgiveness and understanding). It doesn't make sense.

If the stance is because of fear of pedophiles...Then that's just absurdly ignorant.

I think Twin said it best: Respect.

This makes absolutely no sense as a response to what I wrote.

Yes, because you edited your post after I posted my reply...

I quoted your post only after you edited it too, just to make you sure you don't edit it again and loses sense completely.

Tssk Pali...

Uh, no... Time stamp for my last edit of that post: 8:49, two minutes after the original post, when I removed the words "without the negative associations" from the second sentence. Time stamp for your original post: 9:23, over half an hour later. Nowhere in my post, before or after the edit, was a reference to pedophilia or children being at risk.

Try again.
