Hello, Denizens of the Forsaken Lands:

The staff of FL is proud of what we have - a great game with great players. However, great is not enough, and we are constantly striving to improve. You, the lifeblood of our game, have made your voices heard in many areas where you think we can make positive strides. One such area is our website.

Over the past several weeks we've had many people come to us offering their services, chomping at the proverbial bit to show off their web-building skills. One suggested we hand over the project to you, and that's precisely what we plan to do.

Starting today, we ask anyone who is interested in polishing the face of our game to step forward. Create what you feel would best represent the Forsaken Lands to the world, and let us see it. The chosen design will be the Gateway to Aabahran, and its designer will be the Master.

The Rules:

- Create only 2 or 3 pages, focusing on design.

- Do NOT spend any money on website creation.

- Post your submissions in this thread.

- Remember that this is a family friendly MUD. No cursing, no nudity.

- Build it with players who have never tried FL in mind.

The top design chosen will be adopted as our website, and its developer will be in charge of the site. Second and third place winners will join the lead designer, helping in website creation and upkeep.

Let's see what you got!

Horrible! Ugly! I am totally kidding. I like the background alot. I was building a flash menu system earlier to interactively send you to certain pages. like clicking Races into lets say human and it would take you into basically an almost character creation screen like on vid-yah games, giving new players a visual of each race, but due to my horrid schedule this week for work I havent done much more with it.

There will be ample time for everyone to make their submissions, so don't feel like you have to rush it. We only need a basic template to give us an idea of what you'd like to create, so don't drive yourself crazy setting everything up at once!

An anteater, in a way it sits for a soul-collecting demon.

Your site is too wide, Vol. My screen width is 1280, and it goes over (I get horisontal scrollbar). Otherwise it looks very interesting.

Few things for people to keep in mind: (Vol can ignore all but first three)

* Content width should not be wider than 1000 pixels. There's still people who have 1028x768 resolution on their screen. Give them a chance to view the page without horisontal scrolling.

* Use images that are copy-free (including "you can use these if you mention where you got them"), unless you create them yourself. Creating example pages/site with site-builder creates layer we cannot copy "as is", unless the builder-content (images) is copy-free, or you use ONLY images that are copy-free, or create them yourself. Or use style that doesn't include images other than those you separately put in place. (for example, the Vol's site's content-wrapper's border - it's an image, proprietary of the tool?)

* In case of horisontal bars that span from (window) border to border, make sure it's scalable, and that is squeezes into as small width as 1000 pixels.

* In case of a background-image: On Vol's site, the background image is just 1024x768 (55kb), and it's design is smart enough to allow it to be scaled without noticeable pixelation (can be seen only by comparing non-scaled to the scaled - at least on my resolution (1280x800)). My point is, that it can, but is not forced to be a) solid color, B) repeated image or c) an image that's freaking huge to cover up all the possible über resolutions. Plus, browsers of today allow layered background-images.

* Avoid flash at all costs. It can be content for a page, but a building-block of a frame? We got HTML5. Worst of all is a site inside flash.

Those are just few advices that pop into my mind in a hurry.

In my original suggestion about the contest, I told that suggestion could also be an image, that I can code into HTML. For some reason, Vol left that out. In case this wont be added to the "rules" of this competition, then if there's someone who would like to participate with graphics, I can do the code. PM me a link to your vision.

Alright community,

I've given you roughly a week to consider this contest, and now its time to get it officially underway.

From today, contestants will have two weeks to complete and submit their website design for consideration. Anything submitted after the deadline wont be considered, so make sure you get it finished in the time allowed!

I'd also like for those who are planning to participate to post here (if you're working with a team, only one person needs to post.)

Unfortunately It will be unlikely for me to go as a main contender, if anyone needs any snippets let me know. I will be packing over the next week and moving this coming weekend. With that in mind I will not have enough time to complete a worthy design. Luckily we have hoards of talented people here.

Hopefully you will see something from me.

Here's hoping more people join in, or this wont be much of a contest!

Come on now, we know how you feel about the website, this is your chance to do something about it!

We can rebuild it. We have the technology. We can make better, stronger, faster!
