A good omen?

Ladies and gentlemen,

Refrain from personal attacks and stick to the subject at hand. There are several good thoughts here, and we should respect the opinions of everyone.

Of course, arguing for the sake of arguing isn't helpful either, so avoid pointlessly negative responses.

That is all.

by valid, I mean, present a tangible benefit from the rolling system that warrants keeping it.

What does it teach people about our mud?

You like to roleplay, obviously, so login to Forsaken lands, but take every step of login and analyze it roleplaying as if you were completly new.

Catalogue the experience as you would imagine a new perosn who knows nothing about our mud or forum would. You will find thing slike the roller to be a glaring handicap to the first impression experience.

Hegemon:

In D&D, rolling served a purpose (as well as being optional). Stats were placed logically and the distribution had a huge effect on the character's distinctiveness (therefore, it promoted build/RP diversity). So it had all the merits of a good flexible and dynamic system.

None of those apply to us.

Like I said before, if we could fix how the stat distribution works, that is a viable alternative. But as it stands, it doesn't serve any positive purpose. In fact, it is quite damaging as the only effect the roller has on the game is clearly negative.

It is a lot like how the point-based quest race/class quests go. There is a good set of answers and to answer them in any other way will risk failure and nerf your character. There is nothing dynamic or engaging about them.

F0xx: We could always replace the roller with a required background application for new characters. That'd be a wonderful forced investment in making each character, which should make you happy--without the drawback of being logically contrived. Unfortunately, it would suck for the rest of us and be a huge detriment to new players, as well as suffering from no connection to build/RP, so obviously we won't be a MUD like that.

This thread made me laugh. Anyone who defends the roller in its current form is just being silly and arguing for no reason. I have been saying it needed to change for years and this thread actually has some good ideas in it. There has still not been a single convincing argument that the roller should remain the same. The only defense it has (from foxx and valek) is that it is a microcosm of the game and somehow teaches newbies critical thinking...Seriously guys?
