Monorod damage?

Am I missing something or is the damage variable for this weapon a little off?

For an avg damage weapon of 31, it does a lot weaker hits than many other weapons i've tried.

For example, an avg damage 25 weapon will hit DISMEMBERS and LACERATES consistently. The monorod goes from LACERATES all the way down to injures and decimates very frequently. Hardly very respectable for a weapon everyone told me was great.

Yes, I am making sure to test on non physical resistant creatures.

Exact same hit/dam, non physical resist creatures, tested on many different creatures and players.

Was thinking maybe "spears" have a variable dictating a wide range of damage. However, thin handled spear did more consistent damage than the monorod. Just thought it a little strange.

Another factor to consider... and it should prove while disproving your theory about thin handled being more stable than the monorod... is the actual XdY of the weapon that creates the average. For instance the monorod is a 7d8. 7 dice with 8 sides are being rolled. You can get anywhere from a 7 (all 1s) to a 56 (all 8s). Pretty wide range. Tempest trident is an 11d4. anywhere from 11 to 44. Still a wide range, but it is smaller than the monorod and offers a higher guaranteed damage with a smaller potential damage. The thin handled spear happens to be a 5d8. It is inherently offering a weaker minimum damage, a weaker maximum damage, but greater stability because 40-5 = 35 whereas 56-7 = 49. Again, there are more variables including your level and the mobs level... but I am just throwing another potential factor in there.

We're allowed to discuss exact stats of items now?

Also - are you really complaining about an avg 31 (highest avg damage in the game IIRC) damage with the effects that weapon has (I don't think it's appropriate for the effects to be posted here btw)?

Go ahead and sac it and use your thin handled spear then - because I for one would love to get my hands on the monorod again. It would make my PK life SO much easier. So very much easier....

Oops. Very sorry if I posted something I shouldn't have (i.e. item stat).

I was merely stating that the monorod does LESS damage than the thin handled majority of the time. And that didn't make sense to me considering the avg dam differences and the fact that monorod "should" be better like your post clearly implies.

Monorod: decimates, decimates, LACERATES, injure, decimates, DISMEMBER

Thin Handled: LACERATE, LACERATE, DISMEMBER, LACERATE

???? Just makes me confused

I assume that your damroll is around 30? Higher avg damage weapons need more damroll to "trigger" their dmg potential.I will just point out the difference very simple:

If you have 60damroll wielding a thin handled spear you will rarely do more than massacre, while with the monorod you easily do MANGLES DEMOLISHES.The monorod has one huge downfall, that when wielded on a ninja you cannot study your enemy.

Very good post by KRins. I would advice you to go back and look at it very carefully. The exact stats usually give you a better idea of the real damage when having in mind your own stats of the character.

Also, there are more things than simple physical resist. For example it's not fair to compare unsanced damage to sanced (and it seems you are doing exactly so).

There is also stone skin, bone armor, protection, flesh armor and being drunk that each cut a percentage of the physical damage you deal (and some not just physical).

There is also the armor class of the person you fight, that also lowers the damage they take.

On top of that, if you have a low damroll and are using a high max dam weapon, luck will make your usually low rolls to spike quite high sometimes and will add to the confusion.

Saying "this weapon deals more damage than that weapon" without considering the many other factors that come into play is not right and will not feed you back any information.

That being said, there are certain weapons that go as low as 3 min damage to 60 maximum. This is actually the highest damage weapon in the game and it's not the soul forge. Such weapon is suited for characters with higher damroll.

Then there is another weapon with 30 avg damage (and very hard to obtain) whose damage goes from 15 to 45. Such a weapon is suited for characters with lower damroll.

Here are some rounds of combat (dual wielding thin handled AND monorod). Note "slice" is the monorod and "pierce" is the thin handled.

Your pierce LACERATES a small man!

Your slice maims a small man!

Your pierce MASSACRES a small man!

Your slice devastates a small man!

Your pierce MASSACRES a small man!

A small man has some small wounds and bruises.

Your pierce LACERATES a small man!

Your slice MUTILATES a small man!

Your pierce MASSACRES a small man!

Your slice maims a small man!

Your pierce DISMEMBERS a small man!

A small man has quite a few wounds.

Your pierce MASSACRES a small man!

Your slice LACERATES a small man!

Your pierce DISMEMBERS a small man!

A small man has quite a few wounds.

Feels like the monorod clearly does less damage. And sometimes it hits very very low rolls of "maims" and "devastates".

This could be a L30 wielding a L60 weapon.

But from the Massacres from the piercing I bet it's the pierce vuln that Tassin said. Which is great.

Also you should compare weapons with different damage nouns. As slice is slash damage and get a different AC from pierce.

Hey,

Sorry if I seemed a bit prickly - I don't mind a discussion on the mechanics of the dice I just didn't think we were meant to go down to the details of that on weapons themselves. Then again, the thread isn't locked so.....

As for the rest - I'm jealous I don't have a monorod :(:P :p
