A day in the Forsaken Lands

So, I decided to make another character after a bit more than a year's absence (and several years before that). I decided to make a cleric, changed my mind, made a completely different character, wrote up a description and headed out into the big, bad world.

Anyway, so much is still the same. I still recognize most areas and knew where to go to do all the newbie quests. It was great. After a while, I bump into another person in my group range. 'Great!,' I thought, hoping to get a bit interaction. I tried to put on a bit RP, but after being told that knowing their name was less important than grouping up for exps, I decided to just stick to myself. I've had enough of meaningless grinding in a lot other games, figured I might as well stick around for the enforced in-character setting and just develop some sort of meaningful roleplaying arc. Shortly thereafter, I died. I first decided to leave the temple and head back to my corpse, then I figured I might as well just wait for all my stuff to appear in the pit, but by that time I'd left the pit and couldn't find my way back. Frustrated, I typed in 'delete' and pressed enter twice.

So, lesson learned: when making a new character, set a delete password. I'll probably give FL another try in a few days or something.

Pfft. Don't quit out because of that, my dude! There are a lot of awesome reasons to stay and play man. The "grind" really isn't terrible and for the most part you WILL get good interactions through all levels. The RP of the PBase is pretty spectacular right now, don't miss out!

I don't agree with the "You can't know my name because you don't know me" RP. I'm sorry you ran into it.

For those who are reading: You're a hero/up-coming master of your guild. Everyone will know your name, regardless of who you are or what your RP may or may not be. This is to help alleviate the whole improbability in the world of doing a "who" and knowing who in the world lives near you at a moment's notice. Consider it a list of prestige.

Oh, no, I guess I was a bit unclear. I literally asked 'who are you?' as I was hoping they'd tell me a bit about themselves, and they said something to the effect of 'my name is less important than my battle skills', and shortly afterwards they killed the ooze and then left the room. It went roughly like that.

I realize I might have a bit weird standards coming back from having played other muds/mmos/rpgs, but I honestly think a few minutes of interaction really alleviates the boredom of just repeating 'kill ooze/spider/vampire' over and over. I wasn't really trying to complain about that particular bit of interaction, it just doesn't appeal to me when I'm trying to explore a world full of wonder and danger and different people. I realize they were just there to level up most likely, but I sort of feel like it is an important part of the game establishing connections with other characters and not just grouping for the sake of murdering a bunch of animals.

So. Felt like I had to clarify that.

EDIT:

I feel like such a rp geek. To me, knowing the characters that people try to portrait is half the fun of the game.

Well, I guess its up to me so....

Welcome Home!

Much has changed, which means there is a new learning curve. Less so as a returning player than it is for a new player. But enjoy the fact that you have to stop and smell the roses. Meanwhile, like Foxx pointed out, the old players are still around so the quality of RP has elevated over the years. That being said, there will always be those players who have a "life begins at fifty" attitude. Keep plugging away you will find players who are willing to RP regardless of your or their current rank.

Again, and most important, Welcome home.

I'm the person who made the "my name is less important than my battle skills" comment.

I'll be the first person in line to chat you up. The best way to get to know someone is to travel together. I asked you to join, then stood there waiting for (game time) hours for you to respond. In fact, I did acquiesce and I DID give you my name and speak to you in Elvish telling you that you could trust me. I really felt that was enough of an effort to show you that I would communicate.

After waiting for for 5-6 hours, I decided that this was going too slow, so I just went on. My character is a bit arrogant and she isn't going to beg you for hours to help kill oozes and spiders. I felt *really bad* that I would be competing with a fellow Elfie for kills, but what can I do? My character tried her best!

+ ****ing 1!

I've ALWAYS thought this is how everyone should view it. It is how I've always played my chars.

Well, I guess I misunderstood you. After those emotes, I introduced my character to your character. The next nick tick you said 'nice to meet you', bowed, and left the room.

I might just not be used to the pacing in FL. I'll chalk this up as part of the learning curve.

EDIT:

I think, at least in my perspective, that three-four minutes of roleplaying is not nearly enough to even scrape at the surface of another character's personality. Perhaps I have unrealistic expectations on the basic roleplaying level here. I remember I used to enjoy the enforced in-character setting, but I suppose there really was never much time to really get to know other peoples' characters. Hrm. Well, I think I need to give this a bit thought.

I'm not RPing with any of you. You're all beneath me. I wiggle my pinky finger wrong and women faint at the emote of it.

Feel free to tell that to my malform.

As on topic, what have you been playing for so long that has made you so soft?

I play LoL in my free time, and when I help my team mates, all I get in return is: "Fck U, y u steal my kill?"

FL has actually become quite on the soft side if you ask me.

I do regret that you had a bad time in part because of my comments. I hope I get a chance to make it up.

It's always a balance of game mechanics and role playing for me. I'm happy to do both and not let one disrupt the other. That, and I have a limited amount of time to play, so whether it's discussion or combat, it should be at a good pace.

Again, my apologies for being curt. I hope you give it another go.

Also consider that a relative stranger is not very likely to tell you the story of their lives, how they had a great relation with their granny after their partens split up of how they are afraid of ... and so on and so forth. You'll have to get to know people to open them up, just as in real life. If a char is well rped, he / she will have layers underneath the obvious rp surface you need time to explore.

Our history / personality slots you can fill in now should help players get more depth into their characters.

Oh, I definitely agree with that. I suppose my point was that there needs to be some initial connection if any sort of followup is supposed to take place. This thread wasn't really meant as a complaint towards a particular character; I've talked to her and she wanted to level up, so I guess next time I'll approach the situation in a different manner. Me dying, getting lost, and deleting in frustrating was worse.

Forsaken Lands is actually pretty harsh place. I think it'll take some time getting back into things, but at least I set a delpassword for my character now.

Hunting opportunities are scarce. If someone offers you a hunt, take it. You can RP along the way. One of most kickass RP I ever seen by a character was while hunting oozes with a Gnome Warrior.

Another thing, sub 20 are character who have invested little time. You will find that most player will not commit their time with someone who may deleted the next day. Same thing goes for low levels trying to RP as very powerful PC's or threatening pinnacles. Lowbies are cannon fodder.

The game only truly exists at 30 and in the 50's range, the spots where RP mixes with PK.
