Changing Degrees

Most people know how little teachers are paid (unless you're foxx, in which case, 40 gallons of water is too much) and therefore know that with all the politics, social conformity, bureaucratic BS, and paperwork/hoop jumping, the degree itself doesn't come close to getting what most of its Bachelor of Science cohorts will get you. It also drives most people crazy and I've finally snapped.

I've taken two education classes, was given a course in copyright laws I never wanted, spent 50 hours of my time observing in high schools and elementary schools and filed reports on those, took a four hour test to be able to APPLY to the education program (aced it, by the way), transferred schools, kept my GPA at a 3.3...

Well, in May of this year, I submitted my application to the program, all my ducks in order. Paid my $50 app fee, turned in copies of my observation hours by hand (which I was told I could do), and commenced to waiting. September came and went and I heard nothing. Stopped into the EHS offices in October to be told they didn't have my observation hours in proper form. I needed to file them online in a new electronic format and update them to comply with CMU's standards of observation. I could then be eligible to have my application looked at in February, which would put me off schedule. I was already a half semester off schedule because I listened to a community college adviser. Here I was now, about to be put a YEAR off schedule...

I came unglued, right there, in that office. People tend to look out of their cubicles and offices when you yell BULL****! in a professional setting. It's morally shocking, I guess. More morally shocking than screwing a non-traditional, fiscally starved student. Because, in the end, they say it's my fault for not calling their office more often. I received 0 guidance through this process despite having an adviser, an auditor, and a "liaison" within the EHS department. The best advice I got, the last time I had contact was 2 years ago, before I transferred, with my "liaison" who told me when to apply. The process for getting in is almost labyrinthine in terms of paperwork and hoop jumping. My adviser simply gave me forms to sign my major/minor and wished me good luck. My auditor couldn't even properly tell me where I was in terms of graduation date (she seriously tried to pile on more classes and didn't even know I had a MACRO agreement...i signed up for this audit three months in advance...wtf kind of "professional" is this?).

I've asked for a refund of my application fee. Though I doubt I'll ever see it, I'm happily now plugging away on a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts, major still in English literature, but with a double minor now in History and Creative Writing. At least they don't lie about the job outlook for Liberal Arts degrees like they do with education degrees. I know too many people working inner city schools and out of state for next to nothing. Plus, I'm finally happy and with even less stress than ever.

Besides, John Green said it was okay! ;)

What in hell is a Bachelor of science in Liberal Arts?

Arts are not science.

Degrees in Education are just sad' date=' you can and should do better. Good Luck![/quote']

Making this statement while simultaneously decrying American attention spans would be funny if it wasn't so sad and indicative of a systemic education issue in America. It's also, I'll note, exceptionally insulting.

If we treat the drive to educate and the desire to mold future generations like that then we deserve to be the *******s of the developed world. That is, until better systems not inundated with pompous naysayers overtake us.

Our of curiosity, I'd like to know what your chosen profession is...

TLDR...

I'm seriously wondering if anyone is familiar with this phrase as it's used by publishers/editors. The internet slang usage is indicative of a few things, among which I count low attention spans, incomprehensibly low reading comprehension, and a general lack of civility. To borrow a phrase I despise, just sayin'. ;)

TLDR, is just a blurb for your post. I wonder if authors get pissy about having to summarize their books?

Mya; Liberal arts majors are just people who sound smart on paper, but mostly fail at application. ;)

Fine example of what's wrong with America. The slight distinction between summarization and essentialization. What it means to "fail" and what it means to be "successful".

Yes, I see the ;). Honestly, I don't give a flying **** this morning. Best thing I'll ever do is get my degrees and start exercising some "application" of Liberal Arts.

Sometimes this place feels like a community. Other times it feels like a clique.

If you want, go ahead and say "Oh, Valek's having a hissy again". Downplay it if you will. But you know damn well how I feel about getting pissed on in the OOC Lounge on personal posts. *******s.
