*shrugs* Far as I can tell, it's still referred to as atomic theory - do a google search of the term and you'll find plenty of places using it. The others are examples I've seen given by scientists before as well... IIRC, Ken Miller used them as examples of theories in his testimony at Kitzmiller v. Dover.

By my understanding of how the terms are used, the facts would be the observations we make of planetary motions, the theory would be modeling those motions as elliptical orbits which allows us to make predictions on how they'll move in the future. That the theory meets all the facts just makes it a good theory.

But since I'm not a scientist, what do I know? ;)

Stealing that.  As I stated, my scientific knowledge is limited to high school classes going back over 14 years ago.

Narratives is the term used for how humans construct and define their knowledge of, well, anything and it usually involves politics rather than pure reason.  Overcome is a better word.  However, what people see as gravity and what gravity is are two different narratives.  I hope that clears it up a bit.

Atomic theory: the theory of the structure and behavior of atoms.  Nothing in there states that "in theory, matter is made of atoms".  "A theory that meets all the facts makes a good theory."  Yes.  Eventually they too get upgraded to facts given enough proof.  As with the Earth orbiting the Sun.

And after coming back and forth to this post, I read that an initial statement is ... circular.  Atoms are matter.

I'm not sure if Ken Miller did or did not say that, though he did say "Everything that a scientist writes or says is not necessarily a scientific statement or a scientific publication."  Sure he was talking about his book, but I think it stands here, too.

In any case, it's getting late on my end and I refuse further debate tonight.  Time for some mindless gaming.  :gaming:

You're right, I misspoke - I claim not-guilty by reason of being up late and somewhat drunk. ;)

Edit: to summarize - that matter is composed of atoms is a fact. That atoms behave in certain ways are also facts. Atomic theory would be what explains and predicts that behavior. Correct?
