Why would you ever headbutt a monk? Either bodyslam or trip if they are not in defensive stance (tiger is offensive). And stop throwing out haymaker as an opener. Dirt, charge (but not against classes with counter), murder (but not against classes that can counter), or bodyslam to start. Then, when they do something that lags them for two rounds, throw a haymaker the same round. That way, if it works, you can potentially land a slam lock before their flee command goes in. 

 

Playing a Zerk is like trying to crack open a nut with a sledgehammer. It requires finesse to be effective. You have to think, plan, and have excellent tactics and strategy. Timing is very important to be successful.

1) Headbutt is not usually effective against monks, since they can't cast spells. However, if you're path of anger it can be good to help finish them off since it also adds the thunderclap effect which makes fleeing harder.

 

2) I wouldn't have used roar in this situation (especially not spamming in dirt/roar like that, which can be dangerous against a monk). You're better off using a bodyslam for damage, or just not lagging yourself at all and waiting to see what the monk does.

 

3) Against a melee class who is heavily dependant on stances (monk/blademaster) opening with haymaker is nearly always a good idea. You would be amazed how often you land a haymaker and knock off sanctuary, then the person just dirt kicks as an automatic reaction. Even if they don't, they they have to flee and re-prep, which is tough for a monk to do immediately. At the very least it costs them a lot of mana and time and gives you time to regenerate. At the worst, you can catch them in the middle of it and slam them.

 

4) If you're not a minotaur, I have always found charge to be of very limited use as a zerk.

 

5) As an ogre, you can blind the monk then flee and sleep for a tick if you need to regenerate some hp. Ogre zerks have excellent regeneration, and even one tick can be 200hp or so.

 

6) I would have tried to use a mace against a monk, since I am fairly sure monks learn axe.

 

7) Good haymaker at the end.

Monks do not know maces, axes, or flails, so it was a good weapon choice.

I don't think that there is much that a monk can do that lags them, and doesnt also lag you, outside of battle prep. So in this instance, I would not advise waiting forever and a day to use haymaker and try and get that two free rounds. Ogres aren't known for their ability to evade air thrashes or trips, and if he is in tiger, he won't be trying to disarm you (usually). So I would say that you played it well with opening haymaker and using it often. Careful not to spam, though. Try to not input a new command until right before command lag wears off.

I don't much like roaring at monks. Against them, there's more significant ways to cripple them for that 2 round lag timer.

I definitely don't suggest opening charge, especially on classes that can counter. As Nekky said, you aren't a minotaur, so it doesn't bring much to the table that bodyslam doesn't bring more of.

Ok, so the Ogre is a Anger zerk, by the 0 hours rage. Dualing a holy weapon cursed and a acidic bite weapon.
Both are good, and the Monk uses Tiger from the Twin Tiger claws.
 
If I was the Ogre I would be using a two handed weapon. Perhaps a Mace or a Polearm.
He is most likely wielding the Bastard sword and dualing a tentacle whip??? or that strange flail.
 
If I was the Monk I would go and either Airtrash for a lock to prevent Haymaker and rage.
Or go full dirt disarm.
Stance would be Dragon for the huge Dragon claw.

I would only go Tiger for the tiger claw bleeding and only if I noticed that he used dirt sleep.

 

An alternative might be Horse for the reverses of his magic weapons.

I think mantis has no effect on haymaker.

 

Also, as a monk that can Airtrsh using a stone golen and a triping pet might be useful.

I'm pretty sure the ogre is actually a fury zerk. I want to say that I saw assault proc in another log.

 

I am not sure I would use a 2h vs a monk. On the one hand, assault and improved defenses might have made it easier. On the other hand, the monk would have an easier time negating the zerk's damage and defenses by disarming him in dragon.

 

He is probably using the Rib of Shudde M'ell and that holy dmg flail. Not bad, as monks don't know either weapon, but perhaps using divine reckoning would be better against a monk, since the prof bonuses from the Rib are pointless against monks.

Mantis does not work against haymaker. Haymaker cannot be predicted.

Pets would most assuredly be a waste of time. A zerk can kill it while swinging in ~ 3 rounds. In that time it may or may not trip, but probably won't.

 

Air Trash and trip could very easily lock the ogre, but the problem was that the ogre was still outdamaging the monk, even without raging. Lagging yourself with commands is the last thing you want to do when losing a fight like this. 

I don't agree with tiger stance vs a zerk. The zerk will most likely outdamage the tiger monk. I would think that dragon disarm would be much smarter, unless I saw it was dual wielding, in which case horse and mantis for bodyslam.

Assuming he has 2 weapons just disarm the first when he is blind. Output reduced by half. Thrash, trip. Wait for him to make a mistake and lag himself... Disarm the second weapon. Trip to death. 

 

Otherwise I would of gone crap, chii bolt lvl 2, relied on being a lag machine..

 

Remember if you have a healing skill... Using healing AS SOON AS POSSIBLE is always the best idea! 

 

So many people do not do this... On my rangers I always use herb at 60% of my HP. Then we kill each other a little more, 6 hours pass, after running/chasing/baiting and you're now down the wire... someone is going to win... Oh wait.. I can HERB AGAIN. 

 

Now you're dead and Im laughing while I full loot you.

I am /decently/ sure that healing heals more when you are at lower hp. Plus the comparison to herb is not a grand one. Healing timer is 24 hours, while herb is what, 8? If you use healing at the start, it won't matter. Because by the time you can use it again you have to also re-empower again and re-stance and re-chii and re-everything.
