dark souls 2

I have been playing it, and really enjoying it. I am a pure sorcerer and I have had some really tough spots. I never played the first, so there was definitely a learning curve to overcome with my first few hours of playing, but since then, I have been cruising at a pretty good clip. The Smelter Demon proved to be a tough fight, when I finally got some decent players summoned, I overcame him, but once I up the difficulty, I can only imagine what a pain in the ass he will be.

I've been a big fan of this series, and this is my favorite so far. I actually think it's a bit harder this time around. Stat scaling is much weaker this time around, so you have smaller damage bonuses, less endurance, and less weight capacity to support heavy armor builds. Gone are the days of throwing on Havel's ring and wearing whatever armor you want while still flipping around. PvP seems much more balanced, from what I've played. Magic is still powerful, but comparatively less so than the previous game in my opinion. I also like that the bosses and levels seem to require a greater variety of tactics to get through, and the area traps and hazards can be used against enemies and invaders as easily as they can be used against you (of course, tactics become less important if you just summon in other players to beat stuff for you).  My only complaint is the OP nature of the agility stat. It seems to give much higher benefits than any other single stat in the game.

Get a Gyrm Greatshield, get your strength up to 32, and the Smelter Demon becomes trivial. Shield block during his attack, attack him with your favorite weapon/spell/bolt while he recovers, shield block again. I beat him solo without taking a single point of damage.

My favorite thing is the soul vessel...it's awesome to beat the game as one build (Faith) then start NG+ and be able to reallocate to a Hex build (or whatever).

NG+ also is not just the same game with harder enemies.  You'll notice that right away when you start...quite a bit of little changes I've noticed.  The only thing I dislike about all of these games is the artificial SL 120 cap that people have created for PvP.  I feel like with this game, you really need to be around SL 140-150 before a build starts to shine.

Isn't summon/invade range dependant on soul memory this time around and not slvl? Also, apparently in NG+ it seems that anyone and everyone is fair game regardless of slevel and soul memory. It does hint at being able to interact with anyone NG+ and beyond when you first start NG+ and it seems to be the consensus of the community (though believe this is purely anecdotal so if anyone has info otherwise, do correct me). I'm in NG+ on PC and invasions are non-stop. Hex magic is totally crazy, moreso than sorcery or pyromancy. Great Resonant Soul and Climax are... ridiculous. Definitely agree with inscribed, putting points into ADP is definitely worth the investment.
