So Its been about 2 years since I last really played - and probably more like 6 since my last 'serious' character (Daviaus - Elf Invoker.)

Started levelling up a character - but so much has changed - I feel lost.

I'm reviewing change logs / trying to explore - but has anybody got any tips on the top 5 - 10 (?) things I should get be getting my head around - and the best way to do so.  Not expecting to go on a rampage after years away - but don't want to be total fodder either - as that won't motivate me to continue playing.

I just came back after I dont know how many years off, 5-6-7? Do yourself a favor and rank multiple chars to 50 in order to

get the hang of the feel again. Some areas have changed, hit up the new map store just east of Val. I highly suggest a ranger

for your first char since it will be easiest to rank with the smaller pbase because of your pets also easier to explore and gain equipment.

You probably wont experience PK until rank 45, the majority of the 50's that can rank with you probably WILL rank with you for the RP

bonus points as well as getting fresh meat into the pin. Dont expect to win any fights, I didnt and still dont(been back a few weeks, almost a month?).

Focus on learning the areas, learning to run and learning how to cure everything thats gonna mess you up ;)

By the time you rank your 3rd/4th char up you should be in competition mode where you can put up a fight and not get slaughtered, the next char

or two will probably be your best chars as you should be settled back into the game.

Be sure to post your newbie woes, let the imms know whats hard and what sucks about being a new player again so they can help tweak the newbie

system and lessen the learning curve from the ground up :)

Indeed - a whole slew of things have been implemented (see new badass coder named Morlhach) to help players keep on keepin' on. Cabal outfit has been reworked to make it viable. New gear has been added to balance alignments (see Demon Pit, Monestary, Gor'gorak, Fort Blackwatch.) Aside from a few rare cases, the pbase is as classy as ever. I'd say roll something with solo PvE survivability (ranger, cleric, warrior, etc.) and do not take anything personal. A decent set of armor is easier than ever to build - try going Moderate and Journeyman - when I played a Crusader it forced me to learn how to make up for low saves/hit/dam/ac by seeking out nonrares or using the Arena - there are so many options to bounce back after the rare full loot now! Learn Maelbrim and its perimeter, find Gualorium, Marak, Gal Ranidon, the Illithid Hive, Khorandain, Fallen Dara, and any other city that has a temple you can think of - and then find it blind. 90% of my novice status deaths came from an inability to handle the various forms of blindness. You may even try going uncaballed at first. My suggestion if you're feeling nervous about the PK-game at 50 is to try a ranger/warrior Merchant to get back into the swing of things without having to take too much aggression. Hope this helps and welcome back, man!

I can totally relate with both Unknown Criminal and you, English Lad. I've been away for a few years and just returned. What's up with us coming back to a MUD with these fancy games out nowadays? I don't think there is another rpg as complex out there, wiith so many races/classes. Anyways, the hardcore players that have stayed have seemed to just get better and better while we were away and learn the areas more and more and eq more and more and tactics more and more. So it's gonna be a while to get past the learning curve, but I figure with enough persistence anything is possible. Welcome back both of you and myself as well. :-)

Initial thoughts after a few days back.

Leveling is a breeze compared to how it used to be back in the day - but is essentially a single player activity.  In the low 40s now and have grouped up twice.

Playerbase (at least in my timezones) is WAY lower than it used to be - which I guess is the reason for the single player aspect to levelling.

The flip side is everybody seems to be at the top of their game.  6 years ago it used to be fairly common for their to be a lot of people struggling through their high 30s - low 40s - and never getting passed it.  Characters would Pin with 10 - 20 deaths left - and never make it past Veteran in Cabal.

Now all I tend to see is Caballed 50 Trusted and above - so I guess this reflects the fact that while the playerbase has shrunk - the quality has increased.  Had very little opportunities to engage in PK or RP yet - so will see how that goes when it comes.

Relearning zones / Learning new zones has been fun - exploring nooks and crannies etc - and Ironically the Single Player levelling options have really supported that - as doing huge amounts of Quests from the Class Trainer have brushed up a lot of my exploring skills.

The flip side is everybody seems to be at the top of their game.

From an outside point of view, it does seem so. And that is because:

1. Promotions up to T have become much easier to obtain nowadays, due to the many complaints in he past.

2. Equipment has been made more available, due to the many complaints in the past.

You will now see many people decked to the teeth, whose skills at PK are average at best, but since you are not engaged in PK, you have no way to know that, so they appear to be "at the top of their game".

I am glad you are back though. I have many thing to pay you back, you dirty dirty faerie :P

PS. You will also see many people who are generally well dressed but will always complain that they are wearing rags.
