Mudder
How long is the flight? Reading a good book always helps the time pass on those long flights.
Diten
Gear has been solo'd a few times, you'll be fiiiine Hope your trip goes well, my friend!
Cephirus
Some tips for first time flying, bring some chewing gum. The chewing motion particularly helps during take-off/landing and the pressure change. I have particularly sensitive ears, and it makes a big difference for me. As Mudder mentioned, a book is good for distraction as well, especially on longer flights. I also personally enjoy a cocktail or two. It can be surprising how little it takes for you to have a good buzz going. (Please be careful, I have had friends overdue it, it can sneak up on you like a thief and before you know it... BAM! blackjack - lights out!)
KRins
I hate flying. Like I scientifically understand it, but it still makes me nervous in my monkey mind. My advice starts with X and ends with anax.
Implementor Anume Posted June 1, 2015 Implementor Report Share Posted June 1, 2015 I hate flying. Like I scientifically understand it, but it still makes me nervous in my monkey mind. My thoughts exactly. How can the damn heavy steel / plastic thing possibly fly.And being an engineer, I know about aerodynamics and how it actually works... but still!! Fool_Hardy
Wasn't too bad. My trouble is I work on heavy machines everyday, I know mechanics, studied aircraft mechanics in the eighties, I do not trust anyone else's work. Kept waiting for the wings to fly off. Thanks everyone. Chicago airport is larger than the town I live in. Insane!
Magick
My thoughts exactly. How can the damn heavy steel / plastic thing possibly fly.And being an engineer, I know about aerodynamics and how it actually works... but still!! You were taught wrong. It's all voodoo.Oh, and if heavier than air travel sounds contradictory (and believe me, I'm on the same page), then I'd love to know your thoughts on those people jumping out of perfectly good airplanes. Chicago airport is larger than the town I live in. Insane! O'Hare was at one point the worlds busiest airport. All in all, it's easy to traverse. If you're going from Shy Town to Columbus, you're only going to be in the air for about an hour. Books are good to pass the time, but so is looking out the window on such a short hop. Cephirus has the right of it with gum if you're not used to acclimating your ears. While cocktails and drinks are nice in flight, they're only free on international flights. You'll be paying for them on domestic flights in the cabin. Bring a credit card. But it sounds like you've already made the trip, so well done! Really not a bad way to travel.
Mudder
Thanks everyone. Chicago airport is larger than the town I live in. Insane!Dude. That airport is insane. My only experience was trying to get to a connecting flight literally on the opposite end of where I landed. I missed that connection. Glad you made it alive and well. Aulian
I hate flying. Like I scientifically understand it, but it still makes me nervous in my monkey mind. My advice starts with X and ends with anax. Im exactly the same... If I'm on a train and its bouncing around I don't even bother looking up from my book... The plane changes direction slightly and Im like.... WTF WAS THAT!!! WHY ARE WE MOVING?
Aulian
How long is the flight? Reading a good book always helps the time pass on those long flights. At least its not a England to NZ flight like I did in January - that was 37 hours with a stop over in the worst airport in the world in terms of transfer lounge. On the plus side, you got to fly AIR NZ, eh? Like a limousine in the sky. It's always a treat. Though my last time over there I couldn't help but notice they reduced room and added more seats... Still my favorite though.

Yeah I flew China Southern because it was about US$500 cheaper and it was awful

Argo
the last flight I was on, I was sitting next to this guy who was on his first flight ever. The captain comes up and says they are having a computer issue and the technicians need to take a look. I chuckled, and said well 90% of all airbus crashes are caused by computer malfunctions. the guy gets really nervous and looks at me and asks what do I do for living so I honestly tell him, I'm an aircraft technician. I'm such a dick.
Fool_Hardy
There were four separate flights in my trip. On the third, the captain comes on and says "The air conditioning system is malfunctioning, before we take off we will need to shut engine one down in order to get engine two online." I was thinking, f^@& these fat bastards let them sweat! Shut engine one down during the flight and I will personally guarantee all these people die before we hit the ground! Edit: I am not claustrophobic, its instinct, no offense but the sooner everyone else dies, the more oxygen there is to insure my own survival. Needless to say, when we have tornado threats at work, they no longer ask me to join them in the basement.
Argo
haha I had a pilot that refused to take his jet out because the A/C wasn't "working"....I was the technician talking him through the reset procedure, and as i was going through the steps, it appeared to me that everything was working fine and the computer was just popping this code,....So I just said sir do you have air coming out the vents!? he did and then i asked if it is was cold...it was..then i told him he can either take off and fly his mission or he could shut down and come stand out in the 115 degree heat with me on a flight deck of an aircraft carrier while we prep his other jet....he decided to launch
