These days, HD remakes are pretty common! They usually are the same games, but with spiffy new graphics and, often, optional and updated controls. The big question is whether or not this is a straight-up remake. From what Square Enix’s Tetsuya Nomura tells Famitsu and Dengeki Online, it’s not.

“I can’t get go into details,” Nomura said, “but this is not a simple remake. Let’s say for argument’s sake that we only pretty up the graphics for current gen hardware, I don’t think that would surpass the original version.”

It seems that if the game only featured better graphics, then the difference between this remake and the upscaled port would merely be cosmetic.

“The original version is a game that came out in 1997, and if you look at it today, you can feel how dated the graphics and the game system are,” Nomura told Famitsu. “However, that’s also part of Final Fantasy VII.” Nomura added that even today, the game continues to get support and that is unlikely to change.

However, it sounds like like the remake will feature evolved gameplay. Again, here’s Nomura:

“We haven’t shown any gameplay yet, but since we’re updating them quite a bit, please look forward to that,” Nomura told Dengeki Online. (Note: The word Nomura used, 進化 or “shinka,” can also mean “evolution” or “progress.” He didn’t say 変化 or “henka,” which means “change” or “variation.”)

For a title like this, even if you only redo the graphics, I don’t think you get something that’s exciting.”

So, what does that mean?

“Since we now formally revealed Kazushige Nojima’s name for the scenario, there will be more plot devices in the story, so I think you can also look forward to that.”

Ah, perhaps maybe they’ll be adding to the story, fleshing certain parts out or adding more backstory? That I can see making this more than a simple high-def remake with pretty graphics. I hope this doesn’t mean certain parts of the original story, however, will be written out...

“So,” Nomura told Famitsu, “if you are going to do a full remake, you have to take a different approach and make something that suits the times.”

According to Nomura, Square Enix is planning to reveal more about this remake later this winter—at the very least, the game’s formal title. So, yes, yes, look forward to that, too. Expect it.

They are up to 16 games? Wow. I couldn't even finish 7 or 8....they just are not very interesting to me. I really liked 1-6 though.

Come on...Final Fantasy 6 remake! Or Chrono trigger....

Or Xenosaga 4! Yes!

Still playing lots of Crusader Kings II these days. Invisible Inc. and Project Zomboid have been very fun recently too!

I couldn't get into Crusader Kings 2 - its on my steam wishlist but the learning curve is massive. I don't have much time to invest learning the game. Otherwise I would be hooked.. You have any tips for speeding that up Cel?

Im actually playing the Witcher Enhanced Edition - forgot how much I like that game. I never really spent a lot of time on it first time but its actually kinda fun.

Oh, man. CK2 really is a steep learning curve. It helped me because as I was learning, I had a co-worker doing the exact same and we shared experiences and talked about it a lot.

Biggest thing that's nice to know, everything in that game is "searchable." Basically, if there is a free text box, you can type almost anything you can think of and it will search based on that if it can.

Weirdos?? Heresy...Cloud Strife is -tha- man. Best game of all time (though, RE 2 and 4 are up there, IMO).

FF8 is a lot better game, with a much mature oriented storyline compared with FF7 childish emo plot.

But if you guys wish to play FF7 with improved graphics, play it on an emulator. You can play it on high definition since the game is mostly in 3d. Only the menus look dated, due to not being 3d or true type. The 3D models look nice even with the low polygon count.

But Celerity is right. To make a remake, make it of FF6 or Crono Trigger. Who are to this day still the best RPG's I have seen from Japan, with amazing plots.

What he said. ^^ Although, I would definitely be on board with a FF6 or Breath of Fire 3. I've beaten FF7 more times than any other game, and I still get the urge to play through every now and then.

It's at those moments that I hop on CoD and mow people down. That dates my thirst for console games (which has been at an all time low since I purchased my Surface Pro 2 I.E. Forsaken Lands crackpipe.)

I never had the dreaded 'learning curve' trouble with CK2. I came from Paradox's Europa Universalis series though, so maybe the transition is smoother being generally the same interface.

It is hard to give advice without knowing the problem. Like most great games, just play it. A really nice thing about CK2 is that you can't really lose it---so just go with the flow until you get the mechanics down.

You could watch a youtube or something on it too, if you like.

I second FF6, Chrono Trigger, or Parasite Eve remakes.

Parasite Eve? Really?                 Really?

FF8 is a great game, but not at good as FF7.  Drawing spells from the land and monsters was awful.

The endless side games of FF7 were awesome and the game connected with so many people. I enjoyed watching Wreck-it Ralph with my kid more than 15 years later and seeing Aerith Lives spray painted on the wall of the tunnel in that movie.

Chrono Trigger was a great game too but I'd rather see FF7 remade.
