Huge Flame (Of my work)

Yes, AHold Sharecompany's Stop and Shop Supermarkets are getting flamed Hooray! I hate working there. No matter what, every employee in the store is paid the same wage, and the wage you recieve is based soley on Seniority. And all departments are paid the same. As we slave away in the deli (Busiest department that is not the checkout) the pricks in the florist department who do nothing get the same pay. And here I am working in the deli. I used to be the hardest worker in the damn place because I LIKE working hard. But it's very disheartening.

Co-worker A makes a dollar more an hour than I do. He calls in sick once a week, may show up on time once a week, take 15 cigarette breaks a day. Lame. Co-worker B is the highest pain part time employee in the deli. Since pay runs on seniority and he makes about four dollars an hour more than I do, it's safe to assume that he's been there for about ten years. Which also makes it safe to assume that he is a failure at life since he's been working in the deli for ten or so years, is unmarried, still lives with his mom (Who makes his lunches to bring to work every day) and prides himself as being a high school girl's track coach. (So Jenny, how badly do you want to be team captain?) <---Weird! But back to matters that actually apply to the quality of work. He's in the bathroom every ten minutes just to get out, he also will (I am not kidding at all, do not read this if you like deli meats a lot, for it may ruin your deli meat experience) stick his hand down his pants and fix himself. Never mind washing his hands after that, he won't even change the gloves! Customers have reported him doing this blatantly on the front counter as well. (And he still makes more than I do.)

I'm always the nice guy who really doesn't complain with people taking long breaks, or if they have to leave early for one reason or another. I'm always like "Just let it slide because karma will pay off". Ya, right! So last night there were supposed to be 3 of us on until 10 o'clock. So one guy who I have no problems with at all asked if he could leave at 9. Ok cool go ahead, all I asked is that we could try to find a way to have all the cleaning done before 10 when I would be the only one left until 11. So we did. We decided I would work the counter (Most employees hate dealing with customers in this deli but I say ok) all night so that they could get the cleaning done. Cool they're busy, I'm VERY busy, it's all good. So the first guy who left cleaned 2 slicers and the floors (BIG deal and huge props to him) and asked us not to make a mess onto the floor. So now it's 9 and he leaves. He asks us just not to make a mess of the floor, ok cool have a nice night. So now me and the last kid (the king of "I hate to work the counter) are the last left. I told him if he cleaned 2 more slicers, leaving me at just one which I can manage with, before he leaves then he doesn't have to work the counter. He takes an exorbitant amount of time cleaning the first one but ok whatever, all he needs to do is clean them both. So now at this point he is done with 1 slicer, and just blatantly standing around. I ask him to throw away the cardboard into the recycling thingy. He starts complaining, but the only reason I asked him to was because there were managers watching us and I didn't want us to get hassled. So then he comes back and was like "How about I don't clean that last slicer and work the counter, and you can break down the last 2." Now I'm pissed, I would have done that from the effing beginning if I wasn't trying to help you you little prick! Anyway, he cleans the last slicer because I'm pretty sure he knew I would beat the **** out of him if he didn't. So now he leaves at 10, and I'm supposed to shut the deli down at 10:30.

So I get my last few customers and do some of the rest of the miscellaneous cleaning like the tuna salads and what-not. I'm done with everything and it's 10:30 on the button! So I take the slicer apart and put it in the sink and start spraying it with the highly toxic cleaning materials and some lady walks up. I send her away because it's 10:30 and I need to get this done, and I apologize profusely as well. So I go back to cleaning and I see a manager come up to me, followed by that hag. He tells me he needs me to put the slicer back together and serve her. I plead my case he tells me he doesn't care. So now I wasted about 10 minutes worth of work, and needs to work another 5 just to get the cleaning supplies off of it and sanitize the slicer. So she starts ordering, first thing she wants is roast beef, I told her that she should wait until I cut her other meats beforehand because I only have the 1 slicer and she doesn't want roast beef juice all over the rest of her things, I'm still being nice at this point. Now she wants cheese. So I start cutting (on a slicer made for meat, NOT cheese) and she starts yelling at me that it's not thin enough. But the slicer CAN'T cut through the cheese and still in a nice tone I tell her that I can't go any better than that because I'm on the last slicer blah blah blah. So now 6 pounds of meat later, we're back to the roast beef. So OBVIOUSLY she asks for the crappy roast beef that no one likes so naturally we don't have it open. I tell her that it's gonna take another six or seven minutes to open up a new roast beef (Because you have to open them, cut them in half, rinse them off, wipe them with a paper towel, wrap one half, put it back in the fridge, towel off the other half, slice about 13 slices off the top to start getting good slices for these people) so I ask if she would like a different kind and this is the answer I get (No go open one for me now, I don't like the other kinds). As a sidenote no one likes this roast beef because it is not rare, and people like roast beef rare. So I go through the process of opening one, and bring it out front. She asks if she could see it. And then she proceeds to tell me that it is too rare and she does not want it anymore. THE EFFING BI**H MAKES ME GO THROUGH ALL THAT AND THEN DOESN'T WANT IT?!?

Now company policy states that you're only allowed to punch out on the timecard up to 7 minutes past your scheduled time. If not you are considered overtime and must find a manager or you're not paid for that extra time (including the alloted 7 minutes) at all. So then I'm running to get out at the 7 minute mark and make it RIGHT ON TIME (barely). So then I find out that the manager who made me wait on that hag was the only manager on, and he left. So if I ended up staying late I would not have even gotten paid for it. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? This place is just wrong in all ways shapes and forms.

Taxachusetts. Where tree huggers rule and they want to legalize illegal aliens. I'm pretty sure it's legal here.

Edit: Yet another horrible night tonight.

Whoever schedules is a cracktard. They had just two people scheduled until 9PM, and myself alone till 10. The deli is supposed to close at 11, this means that we were closing an hour early. So now I get everything done and yet again I'm down to 1 slicer. My boss told me to close the deli at 9:30 and finish the cleaning. 9:30 rolls around and I do so. I have to send away a few angry customers, but like I said, I have to be out at 10.

So this one couple (Yes, a big fat ugly b***h and her ugly redheaded skank girlfriend) come in a lot, and they're always rude and arrogant. Not my favorite customers. Come in and I have to send them away. It's 9:45. Five muntes later when I have the entire last slicer cleaned and none left open. The manager comes around and demands that I serve this fat creature and her goblin girlfriend. They're still rude, and yell at me. "Well the manager says the deli closes at 10 and WE run off THEIR schedule." With which I retort "I'm sorry ma'am, but I really should not be doing this. I do not make the schedule all I do is close, but I'll do you this favor" which it absolutely is. Then yet again another woman yelling at me because her cheese isn't thin enough when I'm not using the cheese slicer.

This job sucks.

What you need to do is learn the ancient art of not being around when the customers are. I know that it is important to work hard, I do and I'm sure you do too. But when its 10 minutes to closing and I see a lady walking in like she is gonna buy a whole house worth of hardwood flooring (I work in a carpet/flooring place) I chill in the back and make rugs out of fragments. Yeah you occasionally lose a job here or there, and I get paid by the job and supposedly by the square footage (big crock of s**t). I willing to sacrifice an extra $25 to not sit for an extra hour arguing with this woman that neutral oak and natural oak are the same damn thing.

eh...I guess you're kinda stuck there. I really got nothing for you...some people are do**hebags and there is nothing you can do to change them. I guess that why you get paid to work, no one else wants to deal with them either...

Man, when I was back home working at the Big M Supermarkets, I worked in produce a lot, and without fail on sales of anything prebagged, this one dip**** would come in an weight each of the bags of whatever, anything under weight the dick would put it in a cart, and wheel it back to the produce room door. He even once came down on me hard because the green peppers sign was over the green squash and vica versa, they were both the same price, ***, and I don't put up the signs, and instead of quietly informing me, he just started yelling 'Hey you!' Across the store.

The way I delt with it was, he made the scene, and everyone looked and treated him like the **** off. You've got my sympathy man, some customers just bite, and the really rare to find a customer that goes above and beyond curtousy... because it's not setup for it in a grocery store.

Props to you for putting up with that crap, get the biggest slab of meat and start beating your boss to death with it, seriously you should just walk if hes being a dick, let the slicers gather crap and remain unclean till someone develops food poisoning and sues :D . If you work from 8 -6 for example and get no overtime or bonues for working later, make sure you leave at 6 thats the hours you agreed to. Also keep a look out for those dick customers and stick a few prime pubic hairs in their meats, chances are they wont notice till they enjoy a nice sandwich and find a rather unyielding hair lodged to their tongue or between their teeth  . Thing is if your coming home feeling unloved overworked and properly stressed out, look for some other thing to do.
