SORT

Syntax: sort <object>

SORT allows you to move an object in your inventory to the top, even if you
couldn't normally with the GIVE command.

What that help text is saying? The first part before comma seems to be easy to grasp (although I don't understand the point of this command?), while second part after comma leaves me like "What?".

One use-case for this command: If you have two containers of same name, yet they happen to be in wrong order (usually happens after death (if your containers aint looted)), you can swap their position without a need to drop&grab one of them. If those containers are nodrop, you'd be in deep **** without this command.

But that helpfile could be rewritten. I'll do that later (if someone's not going to be faster than me).

Is this suitable?

SORT allows you to move an object to the top in your inventory and item stack. This also works with cursed (undroppable) items, and is useful way to arrange rare items beforehand to counter a possible rare purge.

... item stack ... is kinda redundant with inventory.

No.  I read "stack" as "sack".  Move along.

I knew it! Damn I'm good. :P

What might be nice is if the items hate a time stamp tagged to them, you being able to sort by those which are the oldest. That way you can keep your wands/staves more easily organized by those that have less uses. Or simply allow you to sort by number of uses. Not sure if either is more feasible.

From this thread you could read explanation why such a thing wouldn't be implemented. Assuming that IMMs still think like what @f0xx said.

As a round-around I'd suggest setting up something like that you have a container which has the wand/stave you're using plus a container where are the rest of the wands/staves. With an alias you could make it fast to get a replacement from a container inside a container.
