Izzy
IF you dont play a mage, I do not care about your opinion. I only want people who play mages. Am I the only one who struggles against ferals? Now everyone says oh flee when your furied. Then I would be fleeing every battle as I am always furied. I find myself struggling big time when it comes to ferals. Add in Cabal warfare and its very difficult. I have failed spells more times then I can count and cant seem to stop the damage I am taking. Now there are A few ferals whom are much better then others. When it comes to this specific group, I do not think I have ever KILLED them. Its no secret I play Zazantix. Its no secret I like to play mages exclusively, yet I seem to be coming to the same road block with every mage I try to play. Same bane. Same problem. I have tried things like getting my ac to -700. That didn't work. I have tried to get my HP up. Didn't matter. I have had people tell me to run and heal. Well how do I heal when I lose my concentration five times and the other player is chasing me? I have tried fire doesn't seem like I can get enough fire out.....being a mage to make a difference. OBV not invoker. So here is my question IF YOU HAVE SUCCECFULLY BEATEN KOTREG/CENLAR/KELMI/HEURDIN/ I would like to know how you did it what kind of mage where you? What can I do different? IF YOU HAVE NOT. THEN YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT AND I WOULD PREFER YOU SAID NOTHING. If you have logs of successfully killing one of them. I would appreciate that. Thanks. Izzy
Yeah I do because I cant kill them. I spend my time running. Its not fun. I am asking for help. So if someone has actually KILLED one I would like to learn how? I also dont want you should do this...I want proof that it can be done. Is this a problem Foxx? If you have killed one with a mage, I would love to see it, or would love some advise other then "You sure have a boner for ferals" I am looking for hope because I dont want to give up. I have tried numerous characters and everything I can think of.
f0xx
I haven't fought those you mention with a mage, but I've been in similar situations in the past. Pali
No offense to the player, but Svenik played that terribly. Walking into an active firestorm and fighting when at comparable hp is a recipe for crisped feral - the firestorm and fire shield did more damage than spells cast during combat. You say "remember this" when the second fury misses, but you still only managed to get one out of two spells out after, and even had you failed the second another round of combat would've killed him via firestorm/shield had he not fled - whether it had landed or not, the fight was yours, and it had little to do with your ability to cast effectively while furied. He also wasn't saving well - in your killing engagement, he saved 2 out of 5 spells (three hellstreams, two firestorm explosions), giving him a 40% save rate. I do believe that you recently said that an enemy geared against a mage having an 80% save rate sounded just fine, so he either wasn't geared well to fight you or just got horrendously unlucky with the RNG. Invokers have advantages against ferals that other c/cs don't. For one, fire shield. For two, firestorm. Invokers have spells flat-out designed to fight enemies weak to fire (edit: and that have over-time effectiveness so long as one initial cast is successful), while other c/cs don't. For three, invokers are designed to kill very quickly, and fury's real effectiveness is stacking over time - I can't speak for necros, as I've yet to fight a feral as one, but I can say from my experience that bmgs and communers are impeded by fury more than invokers. Attrition strategies rely on your abilities working reliably, and if you can't reliably heal yourself or damage your opponent, they stop working. f0xx
1 hour ago, Pali said: No offense to the player, but Svenik played that terribly. No offense to you, Pali, but you completely fail to comprehend the log I posted, and specifically why I wrote the "remember this" comment. That's exactly the reason why I don't like posting logs. It's like my Draethyl vs Lejarak log. People come and try to teach me what I could have then better, and then suggest using a polearm against an invoker (facepalm). Remember one thing, @Warmongrel played both Senrail and Svenik. Both were Leaders of Warmaster (you can check their records in game). Both were well played and long lived. I wouldn't myself criticize him and how he played this one even though I killed him. And you come and throw in lightly "But he played that badly.", not knowing the context, the circumstances, the many battles when I fled at 10 hp. Could he have played this one better? Surely. That's not the point here though. The point of this log, is to answer the OP's plea of examples on how to beat the "OP ferals". PK battles have many aspects to consider, starting from character planning, to combo synergies, the itemization, to preparedness and consumables, to planning the actual fight, the terrain, the possible escapes and traps, to speed and chasing, timing, luring your opponent to stay around when low, capitalizing on mistakes... There are so many ways you can win or lose a fight. Learning those takes time, patience and experience. It will not come from asking the playerbase about what to do, simply because 90% of the playerbase doesn't know, and even if they do, when the actual battle happens, they instantly forget about it and give themselves to instinct and panic. Yet they still feel qualified enough to give advises. Out of those characters Izzy mentioned I consider only one as a top tier PKer (Cenlar), and even then, I wouldn't consider this particular character of his as strong, considering the other characters he's played (especially his ninjas of old). That being said, Izzy has many points to consider when PKing. He has many flaws and I've mentioned some of them to him in PMs, and I've advised him on how to improve on them. I would mention them here too, but I don't want any people who fight him to get an advantage over those. Either way improvement will take time, so arm yourself with patience and discipline. English lad
The first thing i feel compelled to point out is that you are asking for advice from mage players - when not playing a mage. Clericals and Mages are NOT the same thing. They don't play the same way, they don't have the same win conditions. You had quite a lot of success on an invoker from what i remember - a cleric plays in pretty much the opposite style to an invoker - so you need to keep that in mind. I've played both Cleric and Invoker to a fairly high standard at one point or another over the years - and yes, fury is a pain. The game is not designed to be balanced for every single match up - thats impossible. FL PK is Rock, Paper, Scissors - to a certain degree - in its design. Ferals are tough for clericals - they get blown up by an halfway decent invoker. Clerical combat is all about stringing the fight out - Calm will do WORK for you against any melee - don't just look at what it does on the affect list - it is far more important than that. Calm and Curse as a combo will drop a suprising amount of -hit on someone, which will help a lot. They key to fighting as a cleric is assessing how much damage per round you are taking, and therefore how many rounds you can afford to stay in combat. I tend to spend most of my time fighting as a cleric around 30 - 40% hp - dropping the odd cure crit here or there to maintain that level. Your job is to keep your opponent interested, while wearing them down. If you are fleeing every two rounds, most melees will scent blood, and keep chasing, not noticing that your HP has stayed static at 30% for awhile, while theirs has dropped from 75% to 30%, and you have landed curse already... that is the point to go for the kills. I have tried numerous characters and everything I can think of. You have tried multiple characters - from what i have seen you haven't adjusted your tactics hugely (limited exposure - so I can't be 100% sure on that.) An evil Cleric can 100% kill a Feral - and yes I've done it before on past characters - especially a Dischord Evil Cleric - where I was fighting one every day and coming out on top most of the time. You've got to accept that as a cleric, running is a large part of the fight - you aren't designed to get in someones face and out damage them. It may not be your point, but it is mine - I'm not attacking anyone's skill as a player, but even the best players screw up horribly sometimes, and that is what happened here: he fought in circumstances favoring you, and either his saves failed or he simply didn't have enough to resist your spells effectively. This is an example where things went very much your way, because your opponent screwed up and his saves didn't stop most of your spells from being effective. Side note: I've played plenty of invokers. I have never died to a feral as an invoker. I've come close twice, one of them being the only cleric that ever gave an invoker of mine a serious challenge. When I say that invokers have advantages against ferals that other c/cs lack, I'm not speaking from inexperience. 31 minutes ago, f0xx said: The point of this log, is to answer the OP's plea of examples on how to beat the "OP ferals". A hint will be enough for someone to dig over and find the answer on its own, without spoon feeding. Hell, he can even PM me if feels the need to (as he has done before). Quote but even the best players screw up horribly sometimes, and that is what happened here: he fought in circumstances favoring you That is exactly the point here - to make him fight you at circumstances that favour you. Khaede wrote a very good and educational post about PK tactics and "multi-layer" tactics i.e. making your opponent underestimate you and thus put himself at risk. You can not approach a character at his pinnacle of power, played by a very experienced player, and expect to kill him easily. You must make him take risks and you must take risks yourself. Noone will blindly stay in combat when he is clearly losing, so you must bait. In this log you don't see the previous 10 battles when he played flawlessly, when I got away with two digit hp. You don't see how I work to build his confidence up, to bait him into taking greater risks. He stays so low because he thought it would work for him, because it DID work for him the previous 10 fights. Quote This is an example where things went very much your way, because your opponent screwed up and his saves didn't stop most of your spells from being effective. You might say I won that particular fight mostly because of luck. He missed a fury, lagged himself for two rounds when he is at big nasty and then failed to save my spells. So is it luck? Perhaps. But more often, I dare to say, luck is simply the advantage a true warrior gains in executing the correct course of action.
Kyzarius
Foxx man, Pali nailed that one. You seem to just be slamming him for having an issue rather than helping. Maybe you should let people who currently play the class offer something and not fill the thread with pointless chagrine. Or hey roll one and post some current logs of you winning. He'll in the light you showed he was taking firestorm damage from walking into it with no stance and that is so old it is before Ranger rework Back on subject... @IzzyYou just have to keep in mind that feral are the bane of CC classes. Communers especially. My dps mages have beaten all of those listed. But they have ways to apply damage without casting. Specifically vuln damage. I agree though that fury has an amazing hit percentage. Even with -650 to -700 I notice no less chance for it to land. For your cleric the fire shield is a must. Then only let one fury on at a time. Work on your escapes. You have to be quick to flee. With Heurdin, summon his pets away then path them to plague them. Kemli it should be more about landing age and minister. You don't want to hit Heurdin with age in front of all his pets because you will eat pet damage, since they always get 2 rounds when joining via autoassist. On the ninjas I can't help much from the communer perspective. Haven't fought either of those on a cleric. DPS mages have a lot easier time of it. I would also recommend posting logs to prayer if you feel it is unbalanced. Show a score sheet with massive AC then several battles where you get hit by fury for a greater percent of the time and the imms will look at it. They are quite thorough when an issue is presented with supporting data and in a clear manner, read as no ranting more substance. I personally think fury should eat 2 rounds of lag, and hit half as often for what it does. It is to easy to disable casting AND they get an extra attack? Best racial combo ever lol. Kyzarius
To add to my earlier advice, @Izzy Apply unavoidable damage Fire shield When you get T this will be even easier. Use hasten mixed with holy hands (you have easy haste as a Savant...) when pressing the attack This works for non-WM's who are under minister. Remember it is attrition. Don't wait till you're hurt to heal. flee and heal after a round or two, you have nearly infinite mana. Keep your hp topped. Don't be thirsty for the kill. If Fury lands ONCE, flee out. no two round spells unless you are confident. Never let it stack. Open with a path and immediate flee, then go heal up. Fight on YOUR terms. for the ranger ...Summon is the Anti-Pet spell Summon pets away, cripple them with path + poison/plague. A plagued pet is a huge burden, and path plague is nasty it will spread. Run through locked doors and summon their pets or them. Split them up. For the thief ...dont forget detect traps Scrolls of defusion are your friend. again, no two round spells, he will just flee and come back. Missile shield is crucial for ninja's and rangers. Use Mirror images to your advantage. Again, easy for a Savant to get at least one.

Because in this thread he is the only one that matters. 59 minutes ago, Kyzarius said: why do you have to be such a pompous ass with your replies. the guy is just asking for help and you are just derailing the thread with shit-talk. Firstly, because I've tried to help him a lot, and I will keep trying to, and secondly, because I believe that this post of his is not a "cry for help" but more like "ferals too OP, nerf please" kind of thread. Story time... Back in the day when I first reached pinnacle I used to play shamans. I liked them a lot. And I was terrible with them. I looked at your shamans and thought, "Hey, one day I want to have a shaman as strong as Kyz's (Lorfaine)", but I just couldn't, whatever I did. I even PMed you a few times asking for advice, dunno if you remember. I made a thread back then, asking for shamans to be given the "magic missile" spell cause they can't overcome saves. On that very thread you came and told me, "Hey bro, shamans don't need anything. They are strong enough, and if you give them magic missile they would be op. You don't do well with them because you're a noob and you suck". This here is the same thing. Back then for me it was a harsh thing to hear from your idol. But I tried to improve, and I did improve, and nowadays I can safely say that I woop your ass at least as much as you woop mine (would be more if wimpy is removed ) My point is, back when I was learning, people wouldn't share knowledge and tactics. You had to read, reread and try to decipher the strong guys' every world. You know how many old posts of Despiser, Trick, Khaede, Chesta, Mindflayer, Totenkopf and even yourself I used to have saved on notepad files? They would make fun of you when you ask noob questions in public. Nowadays people are open and welcoming. The problem though is 1) the talent is gone and 2) the noobs (sorry to use this word) have no respect or will to put effort and learn The other day ingame Anume sent me to help some dude which she snooped. She basically told me "This guy doesn't know basic things and just died to a mostly naked character. Try to help him" So I did. But when I approach him I found that he also blames outside factors for his lack of success. How do you help a guy who sees no problem with his own actions? All of your advices are sound, but Izzy's main problem is that he just navigates the lands very badly. This log and egreir's comment (although harsh) after that are a perfect example of it. Pali
Funny, I remember people always being pretty willing to discuss tactics and strategies for bringing down an enemy. I recall staying off topics like high end eq, cabal info, qrace info, etc., but class strategies?
Zavero
I disagree that all noobs have little respect and do not put effort in to learn. I don't often solicite for help but I read every thread and look at PK logs a lot to try and learn. It works but it takes longer than just asking. This is true for anything anyone perceives as imbalanced, please provide logs. I also recommend posting logs on the pk logs forum, without headling them "here comes the op feral log" from the start. If you keep a more neurtal attitute, you will gain better results. 3 hours ago, Kyzarius said: I personally think fury should eat 2 rounds of lag, and hit half as often for what it does. It is to easy to disable casting AND they get an extra attack? Best racial combo ever lol. Keep in mind ferals also have to fight fire giant warriors and the like... As to dying due to awful tactics: It is not easy to confess to YOURSELF that a death is your own fault. This is step 1 in getting a better pker. If you refuse to see that you died bc you dirt kicked when you had no sanc, the other guy did and you were blind and had no gyvels, then you need to learn this lesson yet (I've done this regularly in 1.0 dirt kick lags yourself 2 rounds. Not a good idea when you have no sanc and they do). This also relates to basic perperedness for combat (sanc, cure blinds, flight, boat, recall) and the ability to evade an enemy even when you are blind. If you are in this stage, rolling another class / race will not improve your play. You need to get through your list of basics FIRST thing after a death or after entering pk range, and then work from there on. Izzy is far beyond that level already, his mages/ communers are in the upper middle field of skill already (this is my own estimation after fighting one of his guys and watching him fight some more), that means, he has a chance to get a kill on the top guys already, though it most often will not work out for him yet. His main problem with ferals derive from letting fury stack several times and not moving well enough. Pali explained how to do the healing dance somewhere else very nicely. Fury's duration is also not that long. If you have no draining effects on you, a long fight favors the mage / communer vs most melees (not those with superior healing rate), as they can recast their protections. So try to get some drain on them (e.g. poison / plague) and wear them down. A cleric will have an uphill battle vs most ferals. I've only ever played one cleric and I've never died to a feral even though killing them also was a pain. Move well, run away if all else fails. Sticking around until you die = over-extending, that's not good.
Izzy
I have played enough to know when I dont have a chance. I fight other melles for hours, they nearly kill me. I nearly kill them its a fun fight. Running for my life after 3 rounds of combat is not a FUN fight. I am not terrible and I have a bunch of kills to prove it. So if someone wants to show me some logs of them killing the people I mentioned with any kind of mage. I would love that. What I've heard so far is Run when your furried. Okay so I will flee every fight because the first ability used is fury. Ive also heard your just terrible and suck. Well I fight other enemies that don't think so. I am pretty sure I have fought some Cenlars/Kotregs/Kelmi other toons where it wasnt just me getting my ass handed to me. (I dont know the other toons they play or who they play these toons with, and am just taking a stab in the dark that I have faired better against their other toons)

Hit them first. You're trying to land a plague or poison. Then disengage to heal, engage them once more, disengage to heal, wear them down. Look at Morains log. He does it to Heurdin with no fire shield and no real attrition mals.
