The violent crime rate for rural areas is lower than that of urban ones, no doubt, but that hardly means it doesn't exist. ;)

Quote

The FBI reports metropolitan cities had a murder and nonnegligent manslaughter rate known to law enforcement of 4.9 per 100,000 persons in 2011. Cities outside metropolitan areas had a murder and nonnegligent manslaughter rate of 4.4 per 100,000 persons while non-metropolitan counties had a rate of 3.1 per 100,000 persons.

Source.

Overall, the US murder rate is about 4.6 per 100k per year.  By contrast, developed European nations average a murder rate of 1.52 per 100k per year.

Edit: it is also worth noting that such rates can vary wildly by locale.  Cities on the whole have a higher murder rate, but this is heavily weighted by certain cities having very high rates (Chicago is at about 8.5 per 100k) while many individual cities are at or below the average rural rate; New York City has for several years now had a rate of between 2 and 3 per 100k.  The same holds true for rural areas, with some being far more violent than others.

On murder rates. The closest city (defined as more than 50k people) to me, had its first homicide of 2016 in October. The three closest towns to me have only 2 murders between the three over the last five years and one was retaliation for the other. Compare that to most metro areas which see the first murder on January first or second, its a no brainer where to live.

As I mentioned, it varies by locality, but your local situation does not refute the general statistics.  Many cities are perfectly safe places to live, despite perceptions to the contrary (largely caused by over-reporting of crime and under-reporting of order).

Foxx, I'll do what I want. ;)
