Back to the topic, I really enjoyed reading this thread. PALI has great points about the investment in characters. When I play I really need to feel that I am influencing the game with my character, and I have amazing IMM support in doing this. Life is just way too demanding to try and invest that time anymore - for me anyway. I'm in the process of a move but I have every intention on trying to get something going again, but I doubt I will ever be able to invest into a character like I had in the past. The other part is that the game is BORING without players to war with. The irony is that people stop playing because of this and it spirals. If we can't maintain a strong presence than any new player who wants to try out the mud will simply quit nearly immediately when they realize there are no players online. I would say that is one of the biggest challenges the MUD would face going forward.

One person mentioned that immortal duties could be consolidated into having less immortals, and hopefully that would create more players online. That might be a good suggestion. Not that the IMM's would need to lose their job, but activity needs to start with the leadership. It also requires a positive attitude from all players. Be promoters by being positive, not demoters by being negative. Also remember it's a damn game! There is no 'winning' in an MMO. There are only various degrees of success, and as in life, it really comes down to how you want your character to be remembered!

See you in game next week! Almost moved!

The problem with just being able to buy them is that you RUIN the attrition part for say clerics and mages etc who rely on Dispel then damage to be super effective, some classes the main point of them is to run your opponent through consumables... so if I can just buy them with gold which is SUPER easy to obtain then I feel you're really going to hurt some classes.

I can't agree - sanc sources of varying quality are already easily obtained, arguably far more easily than 100K+ amounts of gold, and making any purchasable sanc source low level is a perfectly simple way to balance availability vs reliability.  I'm far more concerned with the proliferation of high level sources of sanc than I am the availability of the spell overall.  Low level sources should indeed be plentiful and easily acquired, while high level sources should be more difficult - I'd trade removal of the glimmering staff for infinitely available in every city 2k gold level 20 sanc vials any day as a character with dispel magic.  Running an opponent out of sanc largely just means they disengage until they acquire more, which is annoying and boring for both sides, so easy restock of crappy sanc keeps the interaction (aka fun) going longer and more often; being able to reliably knock sanc down when it's to your best advantage is what actually kills people, which an abundance of easily-stocked low-level sanc would make a more regular occurrence.

Making low level sanc exceedingly plentiful but high level sanc exceedingly rare would also be a buff to classes that can cast it, as they would once again be the few who actually have high level (and hard to dispel) sanc readily available; right now, everyone does through the glimmering staff, and so the spell being available through the class isn't nearly as beneficial as it used to be.  If you feel mages need a buff against melees, as strange as it may sound, making it easier for melees to gather sanc is actually a buff to mages if it's done in a low-level way.

@English lad, I am in the same boat. If it weren't for logging in at work on my phone, teleworking once a week, or the occasional moments I have some free time while my wife and four month old are taking a nap... I wouldn't make enough hours to play. It sucks but I enjoy role playing as it is some stress relief from the grind. I have no answers to fix it.

What app do you use to log in on your phone?
