What you cant do at full hp is even less likely to happen at half or less hp, run away and call it a day. This isnt cowardism, its smart. 

This day and age if a mage cant land an opener that puts them at an advantage they usually cant win, mages dont have the hp or defenses to go round for round less a lucky dispel. Hell, even after a lucky dispel you still probably cant go round for round unless you are a necro(flee, return, pray for lag) 

People will ask whats your equipment, this doesnt matter. Its about HP totals AND -ac, if you cant achieve high numbers in both then pray for lucky starts

Araethil is a moderate and is taking on seriously decked opponents and doing fine. A MODERATE.  

I don't think it's a mage issue overall. Maybe it's a BMG issue?

In the last few months we've had strong psi, shaman, invokers, necromancers, lich... what else... Clerics are and always have been VERY strong.  

 

Any experienced BMG players wanna weigh in? Chesta where you at?

You are averagely dressed, at best. You spells aren't mastered. Your tactics are non-existent. Your decisions are questionable, at best.

That against an opponent who is decked to his teeth, who has cabal ranks over you, great saves and 100 hit/dam while playing the hardest hitting combo in the game.

And he is still struggling with taking 50 hp per round away from you.

I can tell you right now, if this very same battlemage was played by @Chesta6384, @H&R or @Erelei they would have destroyed Veri. And easily.

This was the 2nd caballed character I'd played since my return so was extremely rusty. 

The reason I let the character go, was that the playstyle I expected was nothing like the end result.

Dispel magic casts at level 45 or 46 which is why it's hard to land on anyone with decent saves so it will usually take a few casts.

Who was this strong lich are you are talking about? Is it Kyzarius from a long long time ago before they nerfed them? Please link or post log of the lich awesomeness.

Lich is underwhelming beyond belief, especially for a qclass.  BMG is at least survivable, Shaman does better mals, Necromancer does everything better, Invoker has the damage. Psi are gods.

We have people do extremely well with these classes that you're saying need more.. I don't get it. T

he ONLY classes in the entire mage list that I would say MIGHT need attention are battlemages and healers. I don't know enough about BMGs to say if they are in a good spot or not. Healers were from an era where we had consistent noobs that needed the help or to get resurrected. Perhaps giving a healer more combat cancelling spells/skills. Not necessarily designed to kill, more so designed to stopping violence and death. Opening them up to neutral w/ specific religion requirements could be a path as well.

This. You play a BMG as well as I play a Warrior. I would recommend invokers for you.
 

In my opinion a Zerk is a good match up for a BMG, specially one wielding a Magic cursed polearm. I was actually amazed how long you lived. The zerk wasn't capitalizing quickly enough on your mistakes. There were some advanced things you could have done, but your basics were failing. You forgot to put force shield up when it fell.

BMG regeneration attrition tactics aren't for everyone. They are draining for the player, specially on a heavy unkeep class like a BMG, and have lost their impact on the Playerbase. The actual playerbase is a lot more prepared than it used to be, and able to endure battle for longer. One mostly expands the chances of being killed (by fighting longer) gaining little during the process.
That's why Invokers and Necros are so good. They can burst and get the kill quickly. BMG can't burst so well.

PSI and Shamans, when faced with overwhelming saves can erode them. They can play the attrition game because they are slowly building a victory. BMG can't.

The reason I don't play shamans, is that I played one, and it was ridiculous easy to kill people and hard to get EQ. They also sorta have this strange recepie like approach when you recite this x,y,z spells in sequence. They are very strange.
I have no idea how he did it, I would struggle vs an undead. But then again there are thieves killing Vampires...

Healers suck because of PK restrictions. If healers were more free and had more interesting spells, more people would play them.

What seperates them from goodie clerics though if you go too far with that? They are in a tough spot where if you remove restrictions, you're affecting their RP then whats the incentive to play a goodie cleric instead of a healer?

If you were wearing the +1 spell level good item and the Ethernal Radiance, in your fight vs a giant It would land most likely 20% of the times, or better. Some skill of playing a mage is looking at your opponent EQ, and guessing his saves. And a BMG is the only one with decent access to the 3 schools of magic.

I would probably eaten his glimmering stave and force him to use herbs. It wouldn't matter in the end, but he would get angry.

BMG's suffer from an inability to reduce saves.  It's really that simple.  Slow is the only advantage spell they have.  Upkeep is ridiculously tedious given how long it takes to create a win condition for this class.  Would love to see an experimental addition of Magic Missile to the BMG arsenal.

What's the incentive of playing a Paladin vs a Cleric? Or a shaman vs a Evil Cleric? Class mechanics.
Clerics are based on mental spells, healing and meele damage.

Good themed Healers could be based on healing, and maledictive spells. I could see a healer more like a monk, not using spells weapons and using his hands to do inverse healing.
Healer guys touches your main arm, and you feel a great numbness. -50 second attack.
Healer guys touches your forehead, and your feel a splitting migraine growing.. -35 managain.

Critical strikes, delivered by hands, using inverse healing touch.
