most reliable lag (crusaders) and have major advantages against the second most reliable one (vampires).

You are forgetting the kings of lag, Monks. A well played monks that knows what he is doing is scary.
And while Paladins don't fight Crusaders, Vampires get a lag and meele bonus in the form of autodismounting the paladin.

But the true bane of a paladin is a hide/camo class. They can't lag them in the open, prevent them from hiding or bring them out of hiding.

Then they got a never ending inconveniences:
They can use scrolls, but they have to pay full price due to lack of Haggle.
They are a melee, but they lack a reliable way to blind.
They can use mounted charge to lag, but they can't be wielding two weapons.
They can wield two weapons, but your off-hand weapon will suck and they can't be very offensive.
They can call a horse, but it only lasts 24 hours.
They have a powerful holy damage spells, wrath but it does reduced damage as a finisher.
You can bypass wrath reduced damage as finisher ONCE, but you lose mana regeneration.
Your best damage spell is very good vs undead but it's useless vs neutrals.
You can get +6/+6 from heroism, and increased Wrath damage, but you can't have pets.
You can join a cabal, but both have pets that you must chose over Heroism.
You have cure critical, but you don't know most weapons, so everyone has a weapon you don't know.
You can lay hands on others, but not on yourself. Remember, heroism == no pets to heal.

Paladins are ....
19 of 20 are roled for Crusader access. The odd 1 is some newbie who would be better of as an elf BLM.

The last decent Paladin I can remember was @Deykari elven Avatar. And he swore that they should be played by dual wielding melee beasts, using cure critical as defence.
