DnD

Finally got back into it recently myself. :D

Most amusing party death: our DM was throwing together a random encounter when we were about level 4, decided to throw us against a group of rabid cows.  However, he had only really looked at the CR for cows (2) rather than their stats (much better than most CR2 monsters) or behavior (which is that they always flee combat).  We got utterly annihilated in two rounds.

Favorite character death: Our DM was moving two days later, so we went in knowing this would be the last session of a campaign that started at level 5 and made it to 18 - the game had been going on for over a year with the same characters.  I'm playing a lawful good ninja/monk, which turned out to be a damn strong assassin build.  We're making our way through an archdemon's fortress and I get badly hurt along the way, and we find some glowing crystal in a room that we decide to bring with us.  We reach the demon in front of a giant portal, and before battle begins it teleports the crystal to itself and clips it to its belt.  In the first round I quickly realize I can't beat its DR because it can see invisible, so my sneak attacks won't trigger, and I get further hurt by an area attack - I am at about 10 hp and useless.  So I decide to shoot the crystal off its belt and ghost step to being ethereal, and run across the room in safety.  The next round I return to the material plane, kick the crystal up off the ground and smash it in my adamantium hands - which explodes.  The explosion throws me across the room and kills me, but seals the portal, trapping the demon and letting my party land the kill.  Just the perfect way to end the character: an RP-fitting self-sacrifice combining signature abilities from both his classes that lets us win the last battle of the last night of the campaign.

I read the AD&D rule books and many supplements as a kid, but never played a game of it. Just enjoyed reading them many times. That should've been a big hint as to my interests in life.

Until...last week, we had session one of my first DnD game...and it was a lot of fun. We are a fairly large group--six + DM, a cleric, rogue, barbarian, warlock, monk, and ranger. Did I mention it was a lot of fun?

I've been really lucky these last couple years. My brother's company started hosting LAN parties. Even though he has moved to another state, they still invite me. Wonder why! :cheese:

A few months ago, they started having board game night every other Wednesday. That was a big development for me too...so many board games to play that I never had anyone to play with! Then...they started DnD on the opposite Wednesdays... I wish all this had occurred 15 years ago in my life.

Plus they are all engineers and programmers -- we've even been talking about developing our own games a little bit. That is like a dream come true.

As long as they don't try to relegate me to "community manager". :notme:

Best part of D&D is that anything can happen.  My current warmage introduced himself to the party by challenging our party's rivals to send a champion against me in a duel, which I won.  I was feeling pretty badass after that intro to my new character, and pumped for the next fight.  We get our mission and head off on a longship, and the ship gets attacked by a sea serpent.  It starts by ramming the ship, causing it to rock... and I roll a 1 on a balance check and fall overboard.  I spend the entire battle against the serpent trying not to drown in my armor and need someone to help me back onto the ship at the end.  My character felt rather humbled by the experience. ;)

I started playing D&D when I was 13 or 14. Played every Sunday for nearly 12 hours until I went into the Marines at 19. Then I started playing with a group when I got to my duty station.

Then went back to original group when I got out. I played with @Fool_Hardy for years when I was still in my teens.

I have so many great stories its hard to pick one. I quit playing a few years ago. Every Sunday started to take its toll on my life as an adult. I miss it but just don't have the time now.

Maybe Fool_Hardy can share a story. Our DM was pretty brutal so we never got very far before we got wiped out.

I had a dwarf named Durkott Deertree in 3rd Edition. He had some spears and a crossbow mounted to a wheelbarrow and I would use it for charging attacks. It was called the war machine. He died so much and got reincarnated several times that he went crazy and my group left him in a church basement.

Could never afford resurrection.

Well, our sessions might go well one week @Zavero, but then change horribly.

Remember the level 1 party and the skeleton archers? 3 hours of character creation, one battle, all dead.

Honestly, I just remember that if you have an elven archer who refuses to call his shot, your probably all getting shot in the back.

And then the  skeletons will over run the archer.

Tune in next week, and try to live a little longer. :)

So I have a story from last night. This is a game I play in, not a game I DM.

I play a rogue and we have been tracking a set of artifacts that were the property of the BBEG of the campaign. Through some roguey spying I came across one of the lieutenants who has one of these artifacts and observed her giving orders to an Oni Demon. Both the DM of this game and I both use Oni, they're effectively super beefcake ogre Magi. I know they are not to be trifled with. The lieutenant lady basically gives it orders to stop us, but also specific orders to retrieve the artifact kensei weapon of our monk, and the Oni leave through a portal. So as we're cruising about we find a portal that matches the one the Oni came to in the meeting with the lieutenant lady. Knowing what I know, and being a rogue, I jump off the ship early to scout. Our monk wants to come with me, cool monks are stealthy at least I won't be alone.

I move tactically from cover to cover and hide and observe. We get close enough to observe and I check it out. From the portal we see pour out 4 footmen, 4 longbow archers, 2 giant demon ogres, and one giant Oni with 18 tubes strapped to it's shoulders, basically looking like what would happen if a kabuki blastoise and a MadCat mk.II had a demon baby. So I relay all of this information to the party who are disembarking. And continue to observe. But I'm the only one observing because Mr. Monk has decided it's a good idea to dead sprint at this small army by himself with no cover. Now he's trying to he heroic, cool right? Well here's the problem...the monk currently has 50ft of movement without a dash, and this army is 90ft away. So the monk has run out, and is still 40 feet from the opponents. The entire enemy army gets their turn, as do I but this was stupid and I am not leaving my hiding spot, including the giant missile rack demon. Now this gunboat on feet is important because his initiative means he goes first. It never moves, instead what it does is fire every single rocket  (chaos rocket, on successful attack roll deal 10 damage) into the monk. 18 of them. I'm pretty sure 6 or 7 killed him.

And that's the story of how our monk became a smoking crater last night.

We are not playing oriental adventures, however I do modify some monsters if they fit cultures in the homebrew world.

Speaking of homebrew worlds I have been meaning to admit this for a long time, but my long standing campaign is based off of this game. My players don't know it completely, but ya.

That's cool. I have never encountered Oni in a straight D&D game so I was curious. My group has played straight D&D, Greyhawk, Dark Sun, Hyborian Adventures, Shadowrun, Vampire Masquerade (Well kind of all the horror ones mashed up), D20 Modern, Oriental Adventures, several heavily modified settings, original settings created by members of our gaming group, and a buch of others like Buffy: The Vampire Slayer (my least favorite).

Our group's favorite game to play is Shadowrun... hands down. Battlelords is fun as well.

I too love Shadowrun and I've sadly never DM'd it and probably never will. It is not an easily accessible game, has a huge learning curve, and most players are afraid of that :(

For Oni in this homebrew (Which I've helped the DM create over the years) the Oni are ancient enemies of the orcs.

We typically don't follow the Shadowrun rules specifically because it is a hard system. We have in the past but we typically port it to D20 Modern/Future for ease of use or our DM has a custom set of rules we have used for years and he adapts the game to it. You can use the setting, just change how things work. It gets complicated when decking or dealing with cyberware. You will just need to take time to make it work.

Hey everyone! So I've been a DM for a while and I also play in a game. Who else does DnD and who has fun stories to share?

I don' t play but if you are bored, you are bound to find lots of stuff about what you asked on /tg/ and some old stuff is saved on 1d4chan.

https://boards.4chan.org/tg/

https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Main_Page

And if you like that kind of stuff there are lots of youtube campaigns. I personaly don't like D&D due to the kind of people that normaly play them, but you can find very interesting canpaigns on other systems. If you have the massive time investiment, it's like listening to an audio-book.
The first is about Pendragon, which I thought it sucked but it's actualy amazing rulewise. The second is Dark Heresy Warhammer 40 K, which gives you a look into an amazing RPG setup/ambient.

If anyone know of a good adult (not childish) Call of Chtullo campaign on youtube please warn me. I guess I'm like "Comunity Manager" Celerity and like the rules of these kind of stuff.

It's not DND, but we are playing Descent: Journey's in the Dark as a family where I am the Overlord (DM) and my wife and kids are the heroes. This fits my in-laws worldview. It is a good primer for DND in every way and the figurines and maps are awesome. It's almost worth the money for the map tiles and figures which could be repurposed down the line.
