There is a lot of discussion about potential changes, and tweaking things here and there, so dying to him feels like I am contributing to the testing progress. But this is really next level. I would be really curious to know what advice can be offered if I am to try this again. I won't accept, "just avoid them, they're too powerful" - That is not the type of game I want to play where such power can be reached that it makes them impossible to defeat. Implementor Anume Posted December 27, 2017 Implementor Report Share Posted December 27, 2017 You can't avoid to be petrified and it will take a bit till you can flee successfully, so PUT UP SANC FIRST (herb / pill) and then see about anything else. I've only won vs this kind of psi by resancing and then outdamaging them toe to toe. This is not possible for all classes however. Maybe someone else has a few tips for a mage player. Link to comment
Tantangel
You're not going to save against it, don't waste the time trying to figure that one out. It'll land 100% of the time, but he has to memorize it in order to have it on demand. If he doesn't memorize the lesser spells, they cost twice the amount of mana, but even so you're fighting a very uphill battle. If you want to beat them, spam out your opener. If they don't come in, that's fine, but the second they land their opener, you're going to be petrified. Poison works if you're slept or put under hypnosis, but I wouldn't waste the time on this now. It only prevents you from being able to regen in the end and since it doesn't prevent you becoming a stone, you're just becoming a glutton for punishment at that point. Flee and heal when you can, but due to his path he can make fleeing for you nearly impossible too. He's also dropping your saves drastically against mental, so you're going to be hurting badly. This is one of those classes that you're going to want to avoid of that path if there are other choices out there simply because you're going to be hating life if you're just going after him. If you can catch him while meditating, his spells can drop all at once which gives you a chance to win. If he knows you're coming though and he's prepared, you best hope that you're putting out at least 200+HP in damage every round. I've never won against these kinds of Psi's ever, in fact you have a much better chance at killing a Vampire played by Despiser in most cases. Considering I haven't played that path of a Necro before though, perhaps you could try using some of the more specific spells that you can use on them to see if it works. Just be thankful he doesn't have Minister (unless he has since the last time I saw him at least), because these fights would probably be a lot more short if he did. Considering they have two choices to go to in order to memorize spells more safely, it makes the chance to catch them unprepared even more slim than before. Link to comment
Anonymous
I have fought Meliael several times and never really gained an edge. At the very MINIMUM you must keep black leaves on you if you expect to be around Meliael. If you can cast word of recall in combat, do it. Do not play her game and walk into a room Meliael is waiting in, you HAVE to get the open to have a chance. And if you survive the petrify, you MUST make that the time to fight or Meliael will flee, rememorize petrify and try it again. Her game is tight, yours has to be better. -Nebu Anonymous poster hash: ce81c...f8d Link to comment
Rygothran
Never fight or flee without sanctuary is the only solid advice I can give. You won't win if you get petrified and taken away but at least you can survive to try again. Link to comment
mya
1 hour ago, Anonymous said: I won't accept, "just avoid them, they're too powerful" It's the reality. I knew they were powerful, but I didn't know they were broken. As Anume said, you can't save vs Petrification. And see this " You become less confident. " ? This are your mental saves going out of the window while you are stoned. While stoned a character should not be able to be the target of spells or attacks. Else the combo is broken. Just look at the log, IF he opens combat, his oponent is going to get out of stoned with no mental saves, Paralized and TeleLocked. Completely broken. When you start the fight, your mental saves are gone, as is the duration of any interesting defensive spell. Keep a bunch of herb for reapplying sanctuary in combat. This is a must. You might also wish to jack your AC values vs magic very high, so that he will miss some attacks. Forget parrying. You might wish to remove all your mental saves armor before you get stoned, in hope it avoids the mental debuf. Wear after the stoning. You might also wish to be engaged on a mob as I *think* it stops Stoning. If it doesn't, it should. You might wish to scum potions of mental barrier, and quaff them only after stoning. Perhaps even entomb your pets or fight in a forest. If you don't have your pets, you can forget about it. He is an avian if I recall correctly. That is good, because you can get a wand of hurricane and use it on him. If you got Powerword kill, that might be an interesting set up. It can kill with zero death graps. But frankly your best bet is to place a bounty and hope some Syndicate ninja or thief with vuln weapons kill him. Link to comment
Dale
Anume - I fought that kind of psi before with a Syndicate E and it was nearly impossible to win then Why were they made even stronger? Even if you out damage her, what is stopping her from petrifying you and running away? No way to avoid it no way to stop it no way to save vs it. I haven't fought Meliael, but it doesn't look like I will be considering he is basically unkillable. Illusion of Tuo/Hans? Those mobs were not depowered at all it seems. Most classes can't even solo those mobs and he is running around with them on his arm? I'm very confused by a lot of this and scared, someone hold me? Link to comment
aaa
The only winning move is to not play. This trend of insurmountably strong characters isn't a new one. I'd consider rerolling into another tier1 class, I imagine a bard would majorly outdamage them in the round by round or a double sheath ninja can still push and murder follow up. Link to comment

Most classes can't even solo those mobs and he is running around with them on his arm? I've solo'd them both before on multiple occasions and across various race/class combos. It all depends a great deal on your tactics and knowing what to do. Sometimes I didn't think something was possible because I wasn't able to do it, but then had been proven wrong by someone else playing the same combo capable of doing it without much of an issue. I don't see where they were ever made stronger though, all of their staple spells seem to be the same as they always have been, with some minor tweaks here and there toning them down over time. What prevents them from using petrify and fleeing is exactly the need to memorize spells. If they memorize two of those spells, it means they lose out on the other spell that is the crippler on top of everything else. Memorizing it twice basically tells you that you're going into the fight defensively which is typically the reason why many people die or lose since they didn't try to optimize offensive powers. She can't just stop and instantly regain the spells memorized unless she meditates, and the likelihood that she manages to memorize the spells she used before her spells all drop because she meditated isn't really a feasible solution to the problem either. Find some leggings of reflection and use them when fighting her if you can. It'll go a long ways towards helping you win in the future, unless they were changed over the years at some point. Otherwise a Cleric may do a decent amount of pain in the end, but considering I never had to fight one when I went this path, I'm not sure if petrification can be bounced back towards you. If so, that will give you a major upper hand and you can start trying to spell them up without having to worry about time taken unless they're completely decked in saves gear. Link to comment

tassinvegeta
My battles against this particular path of psi are both of us sitting in a room spamming the first skill. Both log off or fight others out of boredom. Too much of the battle is dictated by that first attack imho and just isn't fun for most. Best advice I can give is to concentrate on sitting in a room and getting that first attack in. If its dirt kick don't attempt it when the tick is about to come else the psi will just rub the dirt out of its eye and petrify you before your lag wears off. Run a few rooms over, until the tick hits, then keep spamming. Also ensure you have an escape mechanism for if you are petrified, paralyzed, and leashed. Stay in areas where its hard to catch you, something you did already which is a great tactic for when things go south. Link to comment

Why? I don't need to know anymore from anyone or even fight this person because it's already pretty much common knowledge that this particular psi is nearly unkillable using a certain tactic. Anyone who is anyone will just wait for them to get bored with that one tactic and delete rather than pour hours into a new char. I killed vibbletick with a thief but it took ALOT of work and planning to pull it off, I'm unsure who had the most kills/caps between us but he didn't have that charm person ability, which is the OP factor in this fight. Malkael, no offense I like you, but you are not the most unique pker and you will have to be to take down some of the current powerhouses. I really don't see how that ability needed to be added is all, you have an unblockable sleep ability (petrify) that also lets you add things that normally wake up people(magic missile, paralyze) you get ananti fleeing ability that is the best of all possible (IMHO) and you get some very powerful damaging abilities that are near impossible to save against. I get the feeling that Meliael is not a newbie either, they are a very skilled and veteran hardened player, so adding all of that to it just makes them even beefier. Yes some characters to get really powerful but no one is unbeatable. I've always known that and we all do, all of us have killed one big scary powerhouse in our time and will never forget about it. But there is a difference between that and what is happening now. Now for those of you who I have pissed off let me say that most of this is speculation because I haven't been in many pk's at 50 since I've come back but I see what happens, I read these logs and I make my own assumptions, that's all this is. But dammit I'm about to roll somethin and tread these waters. Link to comment
Trick
Honestly, this log being posted is a GOOD thing. It shows a few things... Meliael knows what they are doing. What the class is capable of when done right. And is it TOO MUCH? Does it need looked at, refined, and tweaked for the betterment of FL's PK experience? You came searching for advice, but instead you're helping address issues in balance. Kudos. Link to comment
Tantangel
I posted about it in Prayer in 2012 how they can eat through your mental saves a great deal and was told this by Anume: On 1/4/2012 at 10:46 AM, Anume said: Psis will be able to go through your mental saves, other classes won't. It is not easy to kill anyone with a psi at all so that is their big +. Quote Spell: ego whip : modifies savingmental by 144 for 19 hours and that was me getting nailed having -70 saves to mental. I just steered clear of them from that point on. They have a lot of perks to the class, but you have to get approved for them first and not all of them choose to actively PK either. They still have their banes like any other class, it just usually involves an active thinker more so than anything else. If you out damage them you'll probably win, you figure that petrify lasts around 4 hours roughly, that means you can go around finding them for a while and rely on quaffing a vial (not the shit ones that are level 15 either) that give you sanctuary. If it's dispelled, jump on your herbs/pills if you're in combat. If you catch him meditating shortly after your encounter, chances are he's got a lot of spells he'll need to memorize which means it's almost a guarantee he'll have 0 protections and spells up so you have the best shot then. The more spells he has used that he had memorized means the longer he'll have to meditate on them to remember them. Illusionists are definitely a pain to fight, but by no means are they unkillable. Unfortunately when I played one I think my clone spell may have been buggy since it never worked, and it wasn't until a few months after I dropped them that I saw someone running around with the duplicate of strong MOBs I wasn't able to do anything to when I tried myself. But that's another thing altogether. If you poison him somehow though, that means that he can't memorize spells through meditating until it wears off too. Link to comment

Anonymous
Okay, so I am not really meant to lose my only passive damage from my horde. And since it seems he cannot blind me except for the dirt kick that can occur while I am in statue form, I should always have access to sanc via pills n leaves. That would probably help a great deal. Will have to attempt this again in the near future. -Malkael Anonymous poster hash: ebf28...6db Link to comment

That path is still very strong to me though which is typically why I'll avoid them altogether in PK terms, but then again I'm not overly fond of PK in general. I still hate going through Avalon and getting petrified, add in people who are good with the class with varying tactics, I'm left trying to pull out my non existent hair. Try a few different methods though to see what works best for you. It seems like his "go to" spell is simply one spell that's guarantees to land and he doesn't even bother with poison himself because of it. Imagine if you were to get the drop on him though with sleep if you were to wait and spam it. Though better yet there's another method you could also try out that probably hasn't crossed your mind or anyone else for that matter. Link to comment

I believe that the player of this particular Psi, plays most classes very well. I believe they have the elitist calm that only comes from killing a hundred toons. Be weary. Link to comment
f0xx
23 hours ago, Anume said: Maybe someone else has a few tips for a mage player. I have a nice tip for you, player of Malkael. If you play a mage and get petrified, ALT+F4 and go make a sandwitch. At least your tummy will be full when you get back to the PC. I honestly don't know what pleasure does one get from playing an alteration PSI. All your battles are always the same: 1) Sit in one room and spam petrify 2) Lower saves 3) Telelock 4) Drain mana 5) Open with paralyzis 6) Proceed to spam one spell (that does a tremendous amount of damage and ALSO drains mana) If the psi has half a brain, he will never lose. If you are a heavy melee and the psi is a handicapped 4-year old, you stand some chances at winning the encounter, by smoking sanctuary herb and just trying to straight outmelee him. If the PSI is actually someone who knows what he's doing though, like Kyz for example, just go make a sandwitch. Link to comment

Celerity
As @f0xx pointed out, even if balanced (which it is not), the class's playstyle is boring for both sides. If you have to be extremely creative to fight something, that is a quick sign that something isn't quite right. Petrify could use a complete remake if you even want to keep the spell. Not a very fitting spell for psionicists to begin with though in my opinion. Hypnosis and sleep are much more fitting for the class. If you really want an 'alteration' spell, give them polymorph. Lots of much more interesting things to be done when you can change your target's race (and some conditions/reasons to not change everyone to a giant for mental vulns -- don't be lazy with it -- maybe a selection of non-player races that do different things). I would dump petrify in lieu of more interesting status effect spells. Let them trick their opponents into thinking their weapon is a different type or change up terrain effects or something in that vein. Alteration fits that stuff. Maybe allow them to change a targeted incoming spell to another category. Change their own resists/vulns. Transmute between mana/health/moves. Perhaps something to change their mental output to another type. Shouldn't be able to 'uncharm' undead charmies as well. That is what turn/destroy undead is for. Again, they should be 'altering' charmies, perhaps randomizing their attack type or abilities. Lots of fun things could be done. Link to comment
Zhurong
Here are a few things I do not understand about this path of Psi. They sit there and spam petrify (NEVER fails, no matter the saves or ring of abyss) Their pets fight still while your are petrified, meaning if you are already spelled up and the pet bashes, your bash lagged and they can open right then and there with paralyze. Petrify is 5-6 hours long. Paralyze, tele-lock and molecular leash. These combined is too much. Forcing you to do nothing but try to flee a few times and then attempt to out run while you are paralyzed, because you can't recall or teleport. Good luck. And the illusions, there does not seem to be any kind of cap on illusions like there is to charm. There should be a limit to what can be illusioned just like there is to what can be charmed by a DK. On top of all this, even IF for some slight chance you get the opener and start to win, NOTHING stops the Psi from petrifying you just to escape. Oh, don't let me forget that you cannot heal anything while you are petrified, meaning if the Psi opened the fight other ways like vs an ogre, he could dmg you down, petrify then sleep for 4-5 hours then GUARANTEE the win.
