Fired Weapons, bug or melee advantage?

When a group of mobs are attacking a melee firing weapons, if the fired weapon kills a mob all combat stops. Not sure why, but it is a fact.

This only serves to give melee characters an advantage in certain equipment gathering situations.

I am not sure if it is a bug or if it works as intended.

Assuming that the other Mobs step back intimidated by the thought of being shot, why not give mages a similar ploy?

Perhaps make it so if when multiple mobs attack the mage and one is killed "in between" rounds by a powerful spell, the other mobs step back as well.

Just an observation, I am most curious to hear others thoughts on the matter.
