Oh yeah the academy does help a lot in learning the basics.

I geuss it comes down to what you define as newbie friendly...and FL honestly is a very very harsh game...because even though they have been through the academy there is a lot of things in the late game especially once pinned that new characters just dont know. I would be suprised if there is a person here who's first pinn wasnt pkill food for the active base at the time...

When I was a new player, and I was looking for help or advice, I asked around in game. I know, it probably sounds crazy. But I found that if I would RP it a bit, play something like an eager student, and also show intitiative rather than just looking for handouts, veteran players that I interacted with would share a lot of tactics. My characters have also shared thoughts and tactics with other characters who RP it out.

I don't really see characters trying to build a teacher-student relationship in-game anymore. Even an evil character can help people in game if approached correctly, and I really enjoy helping out when people actually put some effort into it. I suspect that a lot of vets feel the same way.

I can't remember the last time one of my characters was asked anything about strategy. I do see a lot of people asking how to do things on the forum, though. Also remember, not everyone goes to the forum, so some people are only learning in game.
