Borderlands 2

Haven't played FL in a while, but have been playing Borderlands. This game feels more like FL than any visual game I've ever played. Quest system, grouping, wonky sense of humor built in, plus the grinding for gear and levels kinda feels the same-- though I am glad FL never did the random drops where you had to kill the same boss 50 times to get a single item ad its stats are random and sometimes considerably worse than you expect.

Doing the DLCs really reminds me of the first time I was in Gear/Avalon/Winter/Etc. I can't quite put my finger on exactly why.

The genres are worlds apart I could never link the two in almost any way.

Maybe just the way you phase into an area which you fight thru trash till you get to the final boss. But a lot of games have that formula.

I do like the idea of 2 or 3 items being dropped by a boss out of a pool of 10 items. But that's probably not a popular concept.

My brother and I used to play Borderlands 1 and 2 together quite a lot. Borderlands 2 is also coming to VR as well at some point which makes it kind of interesting to maybe pick up again. I always felt that Borderlands was most similar to Fallout 3 than anything else. I really like the concept of having to kill a main boss multiple times in order to gain a variety of items though. In fact if every end game piece of EQ were made to not be located, would make trips more interesting at least.

I realize they aren't actually very similar. But for some reason playing borderlands 2 made me nostalgic for FL. I think the multiplayer dynamic of fighting through areas to get to the boss (which I realize is common in many games) as well as the style of humor in some of the characters made me feel kinda like I was back in 2.0 exploring Avalon for the first time.  Obviously FL is alot more serious, the puzzles are alot harder, the game is alot more dynamic and adaptive, but for some reason the same parts of my brain fired and I got all these memories. I went to gear with a big group in early 2.0 and they basically wizzed me through it, but I wasn't smart enough to log it, so my next 4-5 attempts I totally died until I eventually figured out all the puzzles.

I really wish I could roll a char without it turning into a 20 hour a week commitment I can't resist but put time. Unfortunately, the things I love about FL include that it took me what was probably hundreds of hours to solve gear, and I lost the equipment I got pretty fast until I learned to keep it. It also depresses me that there is no game I have ever played that approaches the difficulty level of FL. I spent 10 years of my life playing it 40 hours a wee and still never learned how some of the major classes work. I never rolled a DK or Shaman.
