How can we be a better pbase?

You have to hear our wants and whines all the time. What would you ask of us to make your experience as an admin better?

Get gud!

On a serious note, I am not sure what type of response you are expecting. I know your question comes from a good place, and I read after the fact the Discord chat that lead to this post. However as a game admin, I am not sure how you can possibly answer that without potentially creating an even worse situation.

I know sometimes the pbase feels disconnected from the admin, but that is by design. When you're the boss, you have to act like the boss. That means telling people things they don't want to hear and making tough decisions, right or wrong and for better or worse. We are all human and make mistakes, and I think every person involved in this game, staff and players, want to see the game grow and be successful. I think from a players standpoint (because I feel it to), we just want to contribute as much as we can to see it successful. I think its fair to say, we love this game. Sometimes you just have to trust in the processes and be ready, should the staff reach out and request your assistance. I know all of you would be eager to step up and you guys/gals have a lot of great ideas.

I would disagree here because I think "trust and be ready" is a very submissive position that does not inspire co-ownership of the game world with players. More than likely, folks just leave and do not play.  In fact, people have died while  trusting and waiting.

I think part of the conversation is really just a value proposition. What do  IMMS want that players can offer? More time logged? Game building? Recruitment of friends? More Journals? These come at a price. Players are willing to add value to the game and want reciprocity.

Are Imms happy with the status quo? What are the processes by which current players can contribute to a more robust world in terms of both playerbase size and content? Do we want the same things? Discuss.

I'm ex-infantry. I truly understand the dangers of fraternization. But this isn't the infantry.

This is a game and the people who are playing god* are neither omniscient nor omnipotent. At the very least, they could use solid information.

What kind of responses would I expect? Here's some low hanging fruit.

  1. "Thanks for the interest in helping."
  2. "Right now my priority is X. I need logs about X. Post them on forum Y."
  3. "If you think something is broken, here is the documentation we'd like and here's how to present it. Yada yada."
  4. "If you have an idea, see the previous point."
  5. "We're actively working through a backlog of ## identified issues. We've fixed ## in the last 60 days. We need you to be patient."

Yes, the staff needs to keep secrets but a total information blackout does more harm than good. We don't need to know systems or formulas. We don't need to know every little tweak. But we should know what's in the works and what's in the plan.

And you can't trust the process until you know there is a process.

* Not an insult. You're building the world and it's "physics" for a game thus playing god.

To be short and sweet we need #1 classy behavior from the vets and to teach this behavior the newer players.  Yes, it's a pk mud but it isn't single player.  You can be evil and still let others enjoy their play experience and vice versa.  Pummeling someone into the ground just because you can or treating them poorly will result in a diminished phase which ruins gameplay because there's no one to play with.  If we build the pbase a few toxic characters can easily undo all the work and make people quit because they had a poor experience.  Let's be realistic, this game is fun with more people logged on.

We all bring something unique to the game. We all contribute to the ever changing world in which we choose to spend our time.

I will not pretend to know what the staff wants from us beyond our engagement with one another.

However, I would suggest that when we see our fellow players making complaints about Class A being under powered, or Combo B being over powered, it is certainly within our power to roll one up and post logs to prove or debunk the claims.

We can also aid in the building process of the world, without having to sacrifice our playtime by actually becoming immortals. While they do not always advertise which areas they are currently working on, as a pbase we know that every diku stock area is on the list.

I believe what they want/need from us is our time, I only wish I had more to donate.
