No I mean when I just throw a desc on not really caring I usually get a dragon, but when I actually take time to make one like being more descriptive so I have a chance to get one I dont . So to me it makes sense sorry if it doesnt to you.

Yeah I kinda know what you mean... my last character I put so much effort into my description hoping for a dragon and didnt get one... my latest I just kinda threw it together in 5 minutes and BAM dragon... I think its because when I try hard it gets too long and wears you out reading it.

The best rewards/outcomes from a description for me have come from RP interactions with the Immortal that approved my description as opposed to getting a dragon. Like having a spitting contest with Izlimak, or Malchaeius coming down to tell you how ugly you are.

It's even better when a player reads your description, and sparks some RP off based upon what you've put in there. With Luris, Kronit killed me so many times that I re-wrote my description slightly to reflect one of his arrows destroying half of my face and blinding me in one eye.

Dragons

I love dragons! I’ve only ever actually had one given to me for my very first character. I loved him so much and incorporated him into all of my RP. Maybe it’s because I’m always hoping for another dragon so badly that I never get one. It used to irk me all the time when I would spend so much time making my description only to have an immortal look at me and approve me within five seconds knowing that they hadn’t even read it, so no dragon for me. *pout* Ask Crypt – he had to listen to me gripe about it all the time. ;) Hehehehe

When I was an Imm, I used to love giving dragons too. I tried to give them to people who were very descriptive and unique. If there was a misspelled word or if the grammar was off, no dragon. And for the record, yes – I did read all of the descriptions thoroughly.

heh...still remember the dragon you gave me. i'd decided to try playing a female character, and you commented that i had managed to do it without making her look like a barbie.

gotten several others besides that, though i think that was my first one.

i too love dragons, and even though i know there's much better things out there, i love wearing them. they're like a badge of honor (and sometimes they can be really helpful). my last two characters have gotten dragons (too bad i got bored with one and stopped playing him).

I had a character politely refuse a dragon, once. The compliment was there, but it would have made my training more difficult.

I have kept track, over the years, of the number of dragons I have had and it is ridiculous. Of course, it is ridiculous because most chars with dragons I have never, ever get pinned.

An Immortal says "Well done."

An Immortal gives you a winged earth dragon.

You blink.

You give an Immortal a winged earth dragon.

You say "No thanks. They get in the way."

An Immortal blinks.

I tend to considering a dragon as encouragement more than anything. It gives me a sense that I am on the right track to a well made character. The first step to which is, of course, a good description. It offers a certain vindication to the quality of your character.

I realise the judgement of descriptions can be largely subjective, but assuming each immortal is able to recognize not only quality in writing, but also the more subtle aspects of character being given, I certainly feel that the dragon is a worthy badge to any budding player.

I would expect any cabal player, qrace, or qclass to have at least this standard of description.

In reference to quotes above regarding the time spent on description as opposed to the payoffs, I agree on that for some specific reasons. Often times when a person puts a lot of time into a description, they spend too much time trying to make it overtly fancy and shiny. These grandiose descriptions tend to read like a bad romance novel. When compared to writing one on the fly, you are getting exactly what is expected: a quick glance at the person. Writing like that can sometimes be more inspired and organic. I would caution anyone spending lengthy time on their description to be sure they need it. Often enough you can do just as well or better by just winging it and slightly editing what comes right off the top of your head.

On a side note, I wonder if it might not be a horrible idea to further the concept of the dragon reward. Add a selection to the Forum for dragon descriptions. When a player is awarded one, they are named and put up on the forum. This would help people who would like to see what that kind of work looks like, and also allow people to read some of the great work some players do. And of course, isn't it always nice to see your name on the forum? Yes, sure it is. Checking for plagiarism could be as simple as searching that forum.

The only thing I don't like about dragons is that you can't have ranged weapons with them. I wish that would change. I love dragons, but I'd have to turn one down. Owner-only item maybe, but nah. As awesome as dragons are, I really wish they were removable.

I agree that them taking the ranged weapon slot makes the all but useless at higher levels for those with the skills. Then again, they are that way anyway at higher levels. I would prefer it if the dragon was its own slot, or could be worn in a superficial slot if used a certain way. This would take off the effect of the dragon, but still let you wear it to show...well pride I suppose.

Also, you can remove the dragons. If the how to it is a secret, I would be surprised. They are cursed, nothing more. Think about it.

Aha, true. Never thought of that.
