I mean, unlike previous editions, your stats cap at 20. Guess that frees up ability score improvements (ASI) to buy feats, but some feats give stats so ... Adventurer's League rules do not allow you to roll for ability scores....which is what the DM at the AL table I was at told us to do lol To keep the campaigns balanced, you must use 27 point buy or standard array. Otherwise everyone would just retire character after character until they had near perfect stat rolls.

Rygothran
Min max like crazy. So a girl I work with plays pen and paper on Saturdays at a local gaming store. They had this guy who was new to DMing run a game. Dude made them roll 1d20 for their stats. Like wtf?

Ouch, that's brutal. 6+2d6 was the homebrew rule I've played, I ended up with some monster that night. Like 17 17 17 14 10 1d20 though. That' s unforgiving. Rygothran
We always did 4d6 drop the lowest simply because our campaigns were typically very difficult. The DM thought that realism should be introduced into a fantasy table top game.... like.. If you clear the first level of the temple and then go rest for two weeks (yes, we only healed 1 hp a night and had no cleric) then the first level would populate once more with monsters. Because that's what monsters do! Needless to say, we have never made it past level 2 in ToEE campaign even after playing it...what.. 4 times? Magick
Turns out that 4d6-low gives about the same average as the 2d6+6. But yeah, we always did 4d6-low as well. Also, if you're into that type of thing: https://anydice.com/articles/4d6-drop-lowest/ tl;dr: 4d6-low is about equal to the elite array.
egreir
Just leveled up for the first time in a tabletop tonight woohoo. Here’s to many divine smites lol 1d10+3+2d8 is gonna be nice even better when I get that feat when I can hit with the other end of my halberd as well

I always said 4d6 drop the low and reroll anything less than three. If you start with a stat below 9 it was because you chose to min it down. After all, you were heroes not handicapped people. @Magick I think your way is good. Chance on an eight is as odd as eighteen.
Rygothran
@Fool_Hardy yes it was the other guy. Dragon master is who it was. You learned not to get attached to characters.
Magick
That wasn't my way @Fool_Hardy, that was @egreir's DM's way. I always did 4d6-low and rearrange as you wish. Though given what I know now, I'd probably either point buy for my next game(s) or elite array. Maybe even let them have the 4e one even if I run a 3.x one. 3e: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 4e: 16, 14, 13, 12, 11,
egreir
1 shotting enemies with divine smite is nice 3d8 on top of weapon damage is pretty gnarly. Just hit level 3 last session...I think I'm hooked lol
Rygothran
It gets very addicting to play. We used to play 12+ hours every Sunday. The time would just fly by.
egreir
Yeah the very first group I played with does 12+ on saturdays and I just can't commit to that w/ the baby and all. Definitely would if I could! I'm lucky she doesn't chop my head off just playing consistently after work 1 day a week lol
