As you said in the other post if you'd stayed away just a tick or two
or used acid blast instead of whatever that other spell was you'd have
won this. So many mistakes on both our parts but I literally threw both
my hands up in the air in jubilation at that point.

 

Now I know or figured out after the fight that there is no reason for me to even try to bodyslam a demon, it's larger than me so it's a waste. I also know (if I can remember) to stop FUCKING spamming commands or I am going to die and die and die. So when fighting this guy I will try to remember to not bodyslam and maybe go for a headbutt.

That last bit I didn't have a mirror image with me. I think you popped him once and I don't believe I got him again. Still worth a shot to see if targeting 2.Umbricant wil work. 

Bodyslam still can lag me if you land it right after my shield falls. It just won't lag me as bad as if I were a small race. 

Your saves are pretty decent considering how many times I failed with level 51 mals and a few of them are pumped up to 105%+. I may need to find a way to get my spells up to 52 or 53 to actually land on you guys since they fail do much now. 

I panicked at the end when I knew I fucked up. I should have had you, but you came back hard and fast which was unexpected. I'll need a different gameplan for the next time, maybe something even more painful depending on if I can pull it off or not. Definitely headbutt if you can. Maybe land a headbutt, then a haymaker to ruin my day further. 

I'll be investing in pills of sanctuary I think for you. The reason I got my shield back up quickly is because that's usually the first spell I'll throw back up specifically because even a bodyslam could ruin my day if luck is against me. It was a damned good job on your end regardless of your mistakes.

For a dev zerk, yes. Multiple. 

That's the other thing I wanted to mention. Bodyslam should be 1-4 rounds of lag. If they're one size larger, should be 1-3. If you're one larger, it's still 1-4, but you have a higher chance for 4. And so on.

Aren't you an Anger Berserker though? Otherwise haymaker wouldn't have worked for you since I was using a shield. If you chose Path of Devastation, yes you can continue stacking your berserk up, but each time you use it, the mana required also increases. When I had mine, by about the 5th or 6th berserk, my mana was tapped out but it did help in my stronger challenges. GIve it about 30 more hours and you'll probably be one of the more difficult fights for most people depending on your output. Since you're a Berserker you can forgo some hitroll and damroll items in the game and aim for saves because it'll make up for it. I believe I had somewhere around -70 saves in all categories (combined with save versus spells) and I could pump up my own hit/dam to around 70 each. I went with Barbarian though so I could benefit from varying other potions and pills. Keep your head up for sure and keep pushing forward.

Devastation. I've always thought that a shield would only block haymaker if you actually had the shield block skill but I could be entirely and utterly wrong.

I'm really against people without the shield block skill being able to gain the ac advantages of using a shield. Shield block represents training in using a shield, you shouldn't get the ac perks of something you don't know how to use at even a basic level. I realize it's power gaming 101, but if you don't know how to use something, carrying it into battle is a huge liability.

Having it just hang on your arm will still offer a measure of protection. Being able to heft it around and use it to block takes some practice.

Holding a shield definitely should not block haymaker if you dont have the shield block skill.

I think this used to be an issue, and I thought I remember it being fixed some time back.

It only offers protection because you know how to use it is my argument. Just having a chunk of metal strapped to your arm that you've never trained to use should negatively impact you.

I have never used a shield. Give me one against a sword wielding maniac and you better believe I would get hit at least marginally less because I had a shield. Does this mean I am an expert and can lead all sorts of shield defense strategies? No, but I certainly would benefit at least some measurable amount by having a sturdy and defensive mechanism built to deflect some attacks. 

I don’t think shield without shield block skill should stop a haymaker but see no reason you should get -nothing- from one. Even half the normal ac would be appropriate.

But you would be trying to shield block with it, and that's the point. A shield isn't inherently making you more difficult to hit unless you're using it to block attacks. Otherwise it's just a super bulky pauldron/vambrace

You can be unskilled at doing things (not have the “skill”) and still do them. Just at a significantly diminished rate. 

In this case without the shield block skill you won’t even try to block weapon attacks but it’s still a chunk of metal/wood/whatever between you and what’s trying to hurt you.

So then why can't I wear clerical robes over my fullplate? Why can't I use a staff and get some benefits of two handed as anninvoker. The list goes on and on. Why can't my healer or shield war use 2 shields.

You don't get any benefits of the shield outside of the ac and stats, what exactly is the problem? It is essentially a held item at this point.

An invoker benefiting from two-handed is not at all the same, or dual wielding shields, you are going off on a tangent.

You can also wield the monorod if you don't know spears. You will swing, and miss, or scratch them, but you still get the +hitroll even if you're crap with spears.

in this game anybody can pick up and wear any items (within weight restrictions).

Not everyone benefits equally from all items (see encumbrance, and proficiency in general).

If a magic shield gives me flight, even if I cant block attacks with it I can hold it in my hand and fly.

If someone (a mage) has a free hand, why not hold a magical shield? He has no intention of performing "shield blocks", but he wants to benefit from the properties of the item.

Because that logic literally only applies in FL. And it's only argued as a pro for min maxing. Applying faulty logic to justify "but muh free 80 ac".  I'd wager that you couldn't find one instance of someone carrying something they can't use just because it does xyz across the entire fantasy genre. Barring items who's sole purpose is to do exactly what it does (like Jack sparrows compass for a relatable pop culture reference). 

My argument is that a shields ac benefits are representative of knowing how to use a shield, and should only exist if you can make use of a shield. That's all. If all soldier couldn't use a pike, they didn't carry one. You don't carry a bow if you can't shoot arrows. You don't carry a tower shield if you can't use one.

We most players feel that holding a slab of metal/wood is an innate skill, like wearing armor. You could be blind and still benefit from holding a shield.
It also creates an interesting mechanic where you forgo staffs and wield 1handed weapons and a shield, favoring AC/offence over parry.
