Ya, but you can't run a server on cable, which is something I'm very interrested in. :D

My friend who has cable has crap upload speed...is that all cable or just him?

He also has a very fluctuating speed because cable is dependant on the people living around you. If everyone around him is on(ie during the day) it slows down to near dialup speeds.

I had my broadband re-fitted a few months ago. It's the best. No more getting stopped mid-fight because someone's trying to ring up to sell you a mobile phone. Which is quite funny, because I'd rather have mobile phone salespeople..ring..my mobile phone.

It depends on the account you have. Comcast limits some residentials to 1mbps up. As for setting up a server, I've never heard a thing from them regarding either my webserver or my ftp server. They do complain a bit when my bt downloads go over 50gb a month.

Technically speaking, you're not supposed to run a server on "shared" broadband because it slows down everyone's internet in your area if your server starts hogging bandwith.

Ftp/Web uses very little bandwith.

Try running...say...an internet radio.

Streaming at 128kbps with 100 listeners....

almost 13mbps...no one in your area is going to get anywhere near good speed. ;)

Or...for that matter...a mud server ;)

Well of course. lol Ignoring the throughput speeds, serving 128kbps streams 24/7 over the course of a month would kill be a huge usage. I ran a fl stream for a while, after four or five listeners I hit my cap.

a mud server isn't as bad as a shoutcast/icecast server, but yeah that can hurt too.

I don't know many people though that would willingly kill their own connection to stream radio to a large number of people, that's what a T1/T3/OC3/OC12/OC48 is for.

edit: and I'm not sure what comcast does, but I've never experienced any type of a noticeable slowdown in my speed in either of the houses I've had it at. Either I've gotten very lucky, or comcast does something a bit different than adelphia.
