Regent Avenue

  Lined with tall trees and groomed shrubs, Regent Avenue is the western

half of the main east-west throughway that dissects Maelbrim in half.

Ostentatiously kept humbler than its position in Maelbrim would otherwise

dictate, those that designed it recognized that the role of a regent is to

fill the interim void that is left between sovereigns.  While a sovereign in

power, the title is a reminder of the inferior position of rank.  Therefore,

the road is not particularly wide, but it more than makes up for this in its

comfortable, aesthetic appeal.  Regent Avenue continues west and east from

here and a trail leads into a field to the north.

Green Square

  Much work has been put into Green Square since its construction.  The

remaining rubble has been removed, the earth has been planted with new

bushes and some of the hardier flowers.  A beautiful stone path leads

through the new plants.  The practice field to the north and northwest can

be seen over a row of small bushes.  Whereas the field is mostly used by the

military, Green Square is the people's domain.  Still, it sees rough sorts

who head through here to get to the Milieu, which is to the northeast of

this position.  Academy students and researchers can also often be found in

this area, as the Academy is in the district to the south of here.  Vanguard

Point to the west marks the boundary of the inner city limits of Maelbrim.

The Guildhall of Monks

  You stand before a square simple building, one of many in a row bordering

on the practice field.  It seems the monks have also been relocated here

from the ruins of their former monastery.  Anything is better than not even

having a functional roof over one's head, even if it's very plain and

unimaginative.  The monks have made the best of it and added some lines of

colored cloth here and there, giving the structure a touch of the spiritual.

  The center of the northern half of Maelbrim, the Northern Commons is a

distribution point for food to the locals and a meeting place of less

formality than the Forum.  Set with limestone, the foundations of this area

are firm and elegant.  Wide enough to support machines of war or a line of

defenders, the tactical and logistic value of this part of town was not

ignored.  The battlements of the massive Aabahran Gate are to the north of

here.  To the southwest is the Milieu.  The Temple of Darkness is to the

northwest.  The Temple of Compassion is to the northeast of here.  To the

south lies the Forum, the center of Maelbrim.

Newander Road

  A slender dirt path leads to Newander Park to the east and Northern

Square to the west.  Neither much effort nor much coin has been invested

here, however the path is clean of any debris and shrubbery.  The path has

only recently been created, as the complaints of worshipers of the gods of

light have accumulated on the desks of Maelbrim's authorities.  Now, this

path connects the Temple of Light, the Hearth of Compassion, which is

located to the northeast of here, to both Newander Park and the Northern

Commons, avoiding overlong routes.

out a large chunk of the city.

The Forum

  The newly built Forum is Maelbrim's premier meeting area.  It is a large

circle, its boundaries marked by columns and its ground laid with marble.

Here is where public deals are struck, orations are given, and a great deal

of spectacle takes place.  It was ground zero for the catastrophe that was

summoned to this land, but there are no signs of that devastation now.  What

had once been a ruinous crater is now a symbol of life and a flurry of

activity.  The King's Square is due east, the Northern Commons to the north,

the Southern Commons to the south and Green Square to the west.  A fountain

has been placed in the middle of the square, a true masterpiece of art.

Just north of it, a white marble statue has been erected, depicting a very

hairy, square, small person.  Must be a dwarf. 

 

Some graffiti has been surreptitiously placed here, depicting a White Wolf.

  The southern half of the north-south road that divides Maelbrim in two,

Vigilance Way was named as a sobering reminder of the terrible price of

laxity.  One must always stand cautious against the innumerable dangers that

threaten to strike one down, not only for one's own sake, but for the sake

of those all round.  It is a long, quiet, contemplative road with little

traffic that connects the Forum to Seer's Point.  Trees have been planted to

either side, marking the passage of those that walk this road.  The Library

and Academy are to the west and the Conservatory of Nature can be seen to

the east.  From here, the road opens up into the Forum to the north.

  The newly built Forum is Maelbrim's premier meeting area.  It is a large

circle, its boundaries marked by columns and its ground laid with marble.

Here is where public deals are struck, orations are given, and a great deal

of spectacle takes place.  It was ground zero for the catastrophe that was

summoned to this land, but there are no signs of that devastation now.  What

had once been a ruinous crater is now a symbol of life and a flurry of

activity.  The King's Square is due east, the Northern Commons to the north,

the Southern Commons to the south and Green Square to the west.  A fountain

has been placed in the middle of the square, a true masterpiece of art.

Just north of it, a white marble statue has been erected, depicting a very

hairy, square, small person.  Must be a dwarf.

  This street, leading from the Forum to the south to the Northern Commons

to the north, has been named to remind people of the catastrophe that

destroyed Rheydin, Maelbrims' predecessor.  Even though the crater, that was

all that remained of the Central Commons has long been filled and the

streets leading there rebuilt, the huge hole has burned itself into the

city's memory.  The street leading north, ultimately to the Nexus Fortress,

has been chosen to remind the populace who caused the explosion that took

out a large chunk of the city. 

To the west, the new City Gate can be seen crackling with magic.

Vigilance Way

  The southern half of the north-south road that divides Maelbrim in two,

Vigilance Way was named as a sobering reminder of the terrible price of

laxity.  One must always stand cautious against the innumerable dangers that

threaten to strike one down, not only for one's own sake, but for the sake

of those all round.  It is a long, quiet, contemplative road with little

traffic that connects the Forum to Seer's Point.  Trees have been planted to

either side, marking the passage of those that walk this road.  The Library

and Academy are to the west and the Conservatory of Nature can be seen to

the east.  From here, the road opens up into the Forum to the north.

Undead are immune to the effects of haymaker, I'm sure you figured that out after this though. As far as fighting an undead bmg you have to absolutely hose them as fast as possible. If you are nearing half hp, and they aren't dead you need to get out, and heal up. With slow he can heal 5 to 600 hp a tick. You cannot attrition them with the undead regen buffs and slow. Weapon choices seemed fine, but headbutt(are they immune to headbutt?), and dirt are your go to commands for there fights. You really have to absolutely stay on him and keep him blind. My brief time as an undead bmg made me feel like they where immortal. People have to explode on you pants down to win. If I got a chance to prep it really was no contest.

A couple of tips based on what I saw -

  • Try to avoid stacking commands. Things can change in an instant, an if you've got another two-round command already plugged in, that could be several rounds of unnecessary hurt.
  • If you get paralyzed, run. Almost all of your commands are two rounds of lag; with paralysis, that makes them three. He can cast two meteors or flashfires or sears for every dirt kick, haymaker, headbutt, etc. in those circumstances - definitely not a good setup for you
  • Per Tarako above, I'd say you probably need to go faster/harder to keep the pressure on him. Not sure what weapon you're wielding and the vuln damage is good, but I think you'd be better off trying to find two vuln weapons to dual wield. The faster you can pile on the pain, the less likely he is to survive
  • Don't be afraid to hold the rage back until you feel him out a bit more. Everyone will tell you that you'll do more damage and your skills will work better if you're raged; which is true, but if you aren't at least keeping pace with him unraged, chances that you're going to make up all that ground and start outdamaging him with rage aren't that great. If you aren't keeping pace with him, disengage, re-evaluate, and reset for another attempt

If you are going to fight mages you need to have protections against them.  Especially one that will out heal you with ease.  Also try and improve your equipment.  People tend to say eq is not a thing.  It absolutely is a thing.  Learn what is around, what you can get alone.  Be prepared.  Have leaves and triggers made to smoke them when dispelled.  Flying leaves from Miruvhor.  You need to go around and collect all the things that are available to you.  It is the difference between a good pkiller and a great pkiller.

 

A storm giant Berserker can be a Nasty combo.

1: As @EllaThePuppy said, dual wield vuln weapons. You don't need two handed against a bmg nearly as much as you do front-loaded damage and more potential hits.

2: Use weapons that a bmg doesn't know. You'll hit more often that way, and it will keep you at maximum offensive potential.

3: Absolutely do not fight in open areas. Undead have really high passive regen. The more room you give him to dance, the further behind you will fall.

4: If you are fury, cleave his shield. Heavy mainhand weapon. An axe is preferable. 

5: If you are devastation, you're fighting an uphill battle. You need to rage early, or your path does nothing for you. But you can't rage too early, or you'll hose yourself in the long run. Track your mana consumption with berserk dumps. If you're consistently really close to the mana requirement for another berserk, it may be worth it to get a piece of hybrid equipment that gives you that little bit of Mana to eek out that extra hp. If you have to make a huge stat sacrifice for it, though, it's not worth it. It may seem like a small thing, but if your stats are otherwise already solid, it's basically a free 50 hp. Also, don't berserk in fights unless you have no better option. Even when mastered and raged, it can fail (though rare at that point). When it fails, it's a long lag. If you can still run, it's better to put some distance in and berserk as a means of getting back to full hp quickly. More on that at the end.

6: If you're anger, you're pretty screwed, as there is no explicit path bonus that isn't countered by him being undead. But there is at least one good thing... You can rage at the start of a tick, then dirt, and at the end of the tick the rage will wear off (most likely). This gives you a damage steroid you can use repeatedly without having to worry about over extending (as much. Dispel will still wreck you if it doesn't remove rage).

7: Absolutely do not let yourself become blinded. If you get blinded, run away and reset. If you're already raged, I hope you have a ton of gyvels. Once you're blinded, dispel can end the fight in less than a round if you stick around. 

8: Fight in areas you can escape from blind! This ties in multiple of the above things. You need to be able to get the hell out of dodge if you're blinded until you can see again. There are many great ways to do this, with plenty of funky area connections to exploit where people never look for you. Use them to your advantage. Learn every indoor area and try to draw the fight there. Making him rely on flameblind or color spray swings the fight heavily in your favor. It also negates the biggest damage output spells he has at his disposal. 

9: you can PM me with any questions you have about zerks. I've played dozens. And I can bother @Nekky for you so you don't have to worry about revealing your forum handle.

10: Berserk, continued... Don't mana dump early. Wait until the final 2 ticks of the effect. Then run and dump (assuming you're not about to win). This makes sure that the lower cost will be back so you can maintain the buff easier. It also means you'll have taken more damage, so there's 2 benefits. First, you don't lose the bonus hp to a tick. Second, the last time they'd have seen your status, you'd be at, say, big nasty. They engage and suddenly you're at a few scratches. Never underestimate the importance of a large hp swing.

Don't bother with @Nekky, dude is not that fresh. Here is his out of date  essay on rage/bodyslam. It still has some good stuff in it though. The eq part is bit outdated.

Berserkers are a great class, and often very underrated. They are not simply "walk in, rage, bodyslam, win". I think more than any other melee class, the berserker relies on timing and weapon selection to win their fights. I like to describe them to people as a "high risk - high reward" class. I'll break down the mini-essay into two parts: Weapon Selection, and PK.

Weapon Selection:

A lot of what wins you the fight as a zerk is choosing the right weapons for each match up. Your defenses are generally going to be worse than the people you are fighting, so the way to win is maximizing your strike power. Your overall aim with weapons should be to pick the most offensive possible weapon that the class you're up against doesn't know. Most of the time, this is axe. My zerks nearly always have an axe as their bread and butter primary. Here's a list of some good ones that good aligns can use:

Rib of Shudde M'ell (nodisarm, magic, can poison, +5 to weapon/shield cleave)
Divine Reckoning (magic, very heavy for cleaving, good av dam)
Wisifexor (burnproof, nodrop, heavy for cleaving, good stats)
Notched Axe (heavy for cleaving, great av dam)
Axe of Ludan (Heavy, socketable, good stats)

For your offhand weapon, I often like to use flails due to the range of good flails out there and their high offensive rating. As my various berserkers, I had great success using the axe/flail combo. Your offhand should follow the same rule as your primary, try to make it as offensive as you can, and pick one that a lot of classes don't know. You obviously can't carry too many different ones in your inventory, so picking a good one that MOST classes don't know is often a good idea. I have also found that exotics work very well. Here's a list of some offhands that I like:

Segmented wooden stakes (socketable, great av dam, light weight)
Tentacle of Cthulhu (Noremove, socketable)
Vainglory (No drop, wrath damage for undeads, good stats)
Dull metallic flail (great av dam, nice stats)
Gasteride's Flail (excellent av dam, nodrop, good stats)
Rod of Stars (custom damage type, burnproof, nodrop)
Marmalade Orb (cursed, can use for armor, good stat boosts)
Planar Blade (as above, but not cursed)
Holy Symbol of Yaegar (great av dam, great stat boosts)

This list isn't the be all and end all. You can customize your offhand to your own preference, or to who your major enemies are.

Now for warriors. Against warriors I use a polearm 99% of the time. If you dual wield you may do a bit more damage in the short term, but you will get so heavily outmeleed that it won't matter. A double gripped polearm gives you some much needed defense, and is also a great choice for cleaving. It keeps you alive long enough to throw out some signature zerk skills that may end up winning you the fight. I'll talk about heavy melee characters in the next section.

Wicked Barbed Pike (no drop, magic, pretty light though)
Fire Lance (burnproof, can smoke blind, also pretty light)
Divine Right of Kings (nodrop, great stat boosts)
Whisper thin polearm (decently heavy, good av dam, great stat boosts, disarmable)
Hell's Fury (heavy, nodisarm, socketable, great av dam, good stat boosts)
Blazing Bardiche (nodisarm, zerk only, magic, good av dam, great + to zerk skills)

PK:

I group berserker PK tactics into two main styles: All out offense and playing it safe.  

(note: Blademasters can be in both of these styles, based on the skill and equipment of the individual blademaster)

You use the  all out offense approach  against your clerics, invokers, shamans and healers (often against bmages a magic polearm is a better choice). These are generally classes you can't lag, and you have to overpower them before they can flee and heal up. It is usually safe as an anger zerk to rage early in the fight against these guys, but you will have to use your own discretion based on the beastliness of your opponent. The basic goal here is to go all out offense and ruin them as quickly as you can. I always like to go for a shield cleave against the communers (this is where a good axe primary comes into play), because it often gives you 1-2 rounds of very nice damage, and if they are dirt-kicked and you chase fast, it can take them a while to get a new one equipped. As an anger zerk, it's always good to throw out a haymaker here and there. My advice is to not use it too early, as it will just cause them to flee, and you can't lag them even if they spam after. Try it as a finisher, or a mid-fight boost for you. The round after a successful haymaker is often very nasty for the person with no sanc. The same goes for headbutt. The key here is doing as much damage as you can, as fast as you can, and chasing quickly to prevent healing or recall.

The 'playing it safe' approach is most usually used against decked warriors, other berserkers, crusaders, rangers and sometimes blademasters. Against all of these classes I would recommend using a polearm, with the exception of blademasters where I still advise the axe/flail combo. Your goal in these fights should be to keep yourself alive, and with clever timing and tactical use of cleaves and haymaker, catch them in a mistake and capitalize on it. These classes (especially decked warriors and rangers) are usually able to outmelee you in a straight fight, so you have to be sneaky with the timing of your signature skills in order to trick them and get a win. The signature skills I am talking about are haymaker, bodyslam and weapon cleave. The key to using them effectively is all about timing, and a bit of luck on your part.

One of the most common ways people die to a zerk is spamming a skill after they have been haymakered, allowing the zerk enough time to start bodyslamming them. The same thing goes for weapon cleave. Having someone with no primary weapon is a great boost to your melee. If you haymaker someone's sanctuary off, or cleave their weapon and they foolishly spam a command, it's time to start lagging them for some unsanced or weaponless melee damage. Here's a few times I think it's a good idea to use haymaker or weapon cleave:

1) Open combat with haymaker. You would be amazed how many people just dirt straight away, allowing you the time to start bodyslamming them. Give it a try.

2) After a missed bash/bodyslam, or after a skill that lags them. Even if they flee before you can bodyslam, you can often get at least one round of unsanced damage, or weaponless defense in.

3) If you can feel someone is being cocky, and just trying to spam bash against you, keep them honest with a haymaker or cleave. Obviously if you're getting slaughtered, flee, but this can often catch over confident people spamming. Suddenly they see an easy win turn into them having no sanc or no weapon against a bodyslamming zerk.

4) Lag them with a bodyslam, then throw out a haymaker. You can get lucky here if you bodyslam someone right before they enter a command, then right as their lag ends you are haymakering them. Sometimes you get enough time to start lagging, and you get at least a round of unsanced melee against them even if they flee.

Finally, I've got a little list of my general PK rules for berserkers against tough melees:

1) Be cautious at first. When you get into a PK, test the waters. Get a good idea of how quickly they can pile on damage before you commit.  

2) Get venom sacks for fighting the giants. These are going to be your toughest opponents and when you've got them on the ropes you don't want them fleeing, sorting their shit out, and returning to kill you while you're weakened. I usually use venom sacks in this way - haymaker successful, they spam, bodyslam regular, eat venom, continue slamming.

3) Don't throw out skills for no reason. Try to stay very calm, these fights happen one round at a time. Look at the damage you're doing/taking, and decide whether it's a good idea to try a skill, or whether you should be fleeing.  

4) These classes can generally lag you, so if you are not feeling right, get the hell out of there sooner rather than later. People will call you a coward, but when you use a tactical power play and punk their arses later on, you can laugh at them. Do not wait until you're at one third health being bashed to flee.

5) Be careful with rage. These classes are tough, and you could need to flee at any minute, so save your rage for an opportune time. If it's a close fight, and you think you can win with a bit of extra damage and hp, by all means rage. There is no hard and fast rule for this, just be careful with it. If you are getting totally owned, rage is usually not going to be enough to get you over the line, it just makes you unable to flee.

If you want to be Anger zerk, always be Minotaur. If you face undeads/others with immunity to your haymakers you still have good minotaur charge. As a anger zerk, you want to always haymaker. The results will surprise you. Don't spam it though.

That is fury zerk rage? Well, rage and cleave. Later learn to time it on their skills that lag them. I'd go with magical polearm against battlemage, but that is just me. You can cleave, but over damaging them is bit situational.

If you are devastation zerk? Cheat the rage in. Dualwield vuln weapons that they do not know. Get the iniative.

PS: I have played few zerks. Some of them were even succesful. More so than @Lloth 's :) 😝

That essay is very old, though. But I am still playing berserkers today so I have evolved with the times.

I agree with using a magic polearm, there are a number of pretty solid ones out there:

  • blazing bardiche
  • wicked barbed pike (from the rat king)
  • divine right of kings
  • Abnegatum (demon Pit polearm)

Polearm is your best overall option in terms of your own survival, but is unlikely to land the kill unless the bmage makes a mistake. You will need to stack on damage if you're going to get him. A good tactic may be to use a polearm at first to get him down to quite a few wounds, then once he is committed to the fight turn up dual wielding vuln weapons.

I believe headbutt still works on undeads, but they are certainly immune to haymaker so don't even try it. You should also build up your mental saves a bit so you aren't so easily dispelled.

Yeah, sorry Nekky... but you just don't have the damage to threaten an undead bmg with a polearm. Not gonna happen. There are some choice axes, though. And a lot of bad ones... but... if you have some luck, you can get the best of the best. If you HAVE to use a 2-hander, its still better to use a 2h axe vs the bmg, because at least then you'll have a lot more offense. Still don't recommend. Too much in-combat (and way too much out of combat) healing to justify using a 2hander. Makes no mathematica-ohmygodisoundjustlikemagickkillmeplz
