removing a trojan

my dad's computer got a trojan (trojan.downloader.10412). we know what kind of trojan it is, and file it is in. We deleted the file a week or two ago, but it had already infected the computer. (damn you warez! ) It has destroyed any internet access, and we've disconnected the internet plugs (Since it doesn't work anyways), to prevent spreading of the virus to the other computers on the wireless network. We're about to see if there are any suspicious processes on the task manager. The computer will run for 5-25 minute sessions before crashing, and if I can, I will post the error next time it crashes.

format == wipe

reinstall....equall...well..reinstall...

You basically repeated him.

Stinger.exe is a worm and trojan remover that works. here is a download link

http://frostmud.com/files/stinger.exe

and here is another one

http://frostmud.com/files/Windows-KB841720-ENU-V4.exe

Beyond that...I reccomend you always use multiple virus scanners. Oh, and its good to remember mcafee doesn't serial their software(**HINT** **HINT**) so all you need are the files (**COUGH** TORRENT **COUGHT**)

omg windows firewall sucks. Its not even worth having. heh.

There are free ones...zonealarm is decent but it...like...throws ads at you constantly. If you want I can email you the mcafee internet suite 2006(firewall and a bajillion other progs).

by the way, i have about 17 virus removers on said computer, but only one firewall, the default windows XP firewall.

any good links for firewalls?

Er, why? It's a very bad idea to have 2 running AV programs let alone 17. It causes conflicts between all the programs and can possibly prevent them from working at full potential and cause the PC system to become unstable.

its not a bad idea to have multiple scanners...just don't have multiple immunization/prevention system.

Its a good idea to have multiple scanners in case one fails to catch something, just like its a good idea to have multiple spyware scanners.

heh, actually...when using trojans its proven multiples make the margin for error extremely more likely because of the friction caused between the two.

However, I heard something funny once. No clue where its from, but it was something like "What you do is double layer them with tobasco sauce in between. If the inner one breaks you'll know and if the outer one breaks she'll know. You're essentially in the clear."

;)

I didn't state multiple defenses were bad. But there's a difference between malware defense and virus protection. Malware programs like Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, Microsoft Anti-Spyware, SpywareBlaster, etc all are fine and the more the merrier. It's when you have multiple antivirus programs like MCaFee, Norton's, AVG, etc is when the problem crops up. They conflict on your PC and as they do so they make each other run screwy and cause major instability of the PC itself.

Which is why I said not to use multiple immunization style defenses.

I use Mcafee as my primary suite, and I have norton virus scanner and AVG which I run only when my pc seems to be running slowly and then I disable them. Sometimes they pick up things on their scan that Mcafee did not.

Ah, brsingr, I just realized you have a yahoo email account. No way in hell they are going to let me send you a 140 mb file(is why you should get gmail), but I will upload it somewhere and email you a link.
