And that makes it harder for people to defend against thieves by buying empty backpacks, bags, or sacks. Losing consumables is the NUMBER ONE complaint on loots. Do we want to make it even easier for a thief to steal your hard earned stuff? I sure as hell don't.
I'm not a fan. Or if nothing else, let's take some things into consideration.
In the real world, even thieves are stuck playing eenie, meenie, miney, moe trying to figure out which of a series of identical backpacks holds a purse full of diamonds opposed to a brick. They're still in the same boat judging between a five pound ruck and a thirty pound ruck.
Let's step out of the real world a moment and into FL.
A thief does have to guess the weight of an object when they pry.
A thief does not have to guess the weight of an object when they steal.
Most people don't wear their containers, but you can. One way to stop a thief from stealing your backpack full of consumables is as easy as wearing the thing. He's got to go through much more effort to grab it than he would normally. If you're able to see the weights of said containers, you're now taking the guesswork out of pry. Thanks! Might as well just have stolen it from my inventory were that the case.
Of course yes, you could get a cursed sack like UC said, or you could bind your containers using CPs or RPs. Or use non-standard containers. There's a cloak that you can put stuff in. An egg. And so on.
But all that was concerning Dale's addendum. Which again, I'm not fond of.
As for Fool Hardy's suggestion, what would the threshold be? Is 5000 gold a moderate amount to carry around? Is it "nearly empty" as we've seen people carry around hundreds of thousands on their person? Would the same rules apply to monks? Would it be based on your current carry weight?
This idea I'm more in favor for, but you can almost find out the same information by just stealing gold in the first place.
I'm honestly surprised that thieves can't see gold in your inventory already. I know that having a full inventory and having too much weight will both stop you from picking gold up.
I'm impressed peek when it procs, shows everything... I think of it a quick glimpse, so some items may be overlooked. I'd my 2c. Seeing 2378 gold exactly would be crazy, again my 2c
your carrying 250000 gold coins and think I can not tell your purse is heavier than the fellow next to you carrying 100 gold? Maybe weight on bags/sacks makes things difficult for players. But the purse? Instead of derailing my idea with your personal insults Tell me why you believe a thief can not (or should not be able to) tell the difference. FL currency can not be folded like real world paper money.
@foxx for your benefit alone my Idea limited this on bards.
I think if you continue to add to the skills and keep increasing what classes can do then you're taking out the risk factor to the game. I understand the thought process behind it, but I think we're starting to get away from the risks of the game and that takes away from the game as a whole. People complain HARDCORE when you lose equipment to a thief. Why would you want to increase the bitching by making it easier for thieves? I think it was Mindlfayer that played a gnome thief named Gomo or some crap that just terrorized the player base.
Lots of things don't make sense. And lots of stuff that DOES make sense, isn't in the game. How do you duel wield and use a bow? How does an ogre wear the same armor taken from a dwarf?
Personally, and to derail a bit, I think numbers in this game have become too high and too much of a factor. The reason everyone keeps talking about the old days of PK when you could grab crap eq and play is because that was the norm. Numbers weren't as high and it wasn't as easy to get 55+ hit/dam or get -800ac as an invoker.
