Ninjas

Damn I hate ninjas.

Probably the only class that absolutely makes no sense to have in a medieval/fantasy RPG. Fantasy is loosely based on western civilization's concepts of fantasy, and I don't see how a ninja fits into that. Not even so much that, as they fact that we have this icon of eastern culture in the game, then absolutely nothing else from them. No Samurai. No Huns with the killer horned bows. It always just seemed to me if you planned to allow eastern civilizations into the pantheon of western fantasy, a game would have to bring in more than just one class.

Don't get me wrong...I've had my share of fun playing a ninja. I just don't think they belong. Not without some other supporting classes.

Thoughts?

I don't think we should have them either, however, if there is absolutely no chance they'll be removed (most likely..) then I suggest they be completely revamped. Assassinate is .. just so eastern cultured. I'm sorry, but if you're a hero of your class and race, someone couldn't catch you off guard enough to just kill you with one hit.

Add some more classes. Or remove ninjas.

Argument to that is if you have such a heroic powerful assasin...they can bring down someone in one hit. And dont forget that th eninja has been studying and learning and preparing...for that one strike.

I always saw ninjas as the way to kill the unkillable.

You can be decked in the most insane equipment but a ninja is there to instill the fear of death in to you.

Unless you are an overpowered Vampire.

Those guys do not need to fear any class.

No Samurai.
Though blademasters come close...

No Huns with the killer horned bows.
Though Ogre archer rangers with a certain bow come close....

It always just seemed to me if you planned to allow eastern civilizations into the pantheon of western fantasy' date=' a game would have to bring in more than just one class.[/quote']Excepting those that come close to said classes.

None at all. Thank you. Please drive through. :D;)

Monks as we know them are a completely eastern style. While monks existed in the west, western monks (though I suppose one could call a templar a monk of sorts) did not involve themselves in, or train for, combat. Eastern monks are the ones who created various martial arts and who strived for inner peace through the discipline of mind and body that art brought.

Templar-style character is covered by Crusaders. How about we just rename ninjas to be assassins, and leave them as they are otherwise? Medieval Europe definitely had plenty of assassins.

even though i had tons of fun with my ninja, i think i agree with renaming them 'assassins' and tweaking the names of some of the skills and rank titles. i tend to think of assassins as the masters of infiltration and surprise. retool them to have more advantages of stealth and less to straight-melee. and a way to transport a strangled victim. i guess i always saw them as hidden killers and spies.

First off, don't blame me for ninjas! They were around long before I started meddling. Interestingly, though, the ninja and monk classes were created by, you guessed it, an asian coder. ;) Guess he just wanted equality. But, to that point, I don't like monks either, at least not the Kung-Fu style we have around now. A monk to me would be some sort of cross between a healer, paladin, and bard, if you ask me. That, and I don't think Monks and Ninjas are necessarily supporting classes. I do like the idea of an assassin (in the strictest AD&D fashion).

No, I haven't been assassinated recently. Actually, I haven't been assassinated since AR. I just started thinking about Ninjas, and how it just didn't make sense.

An Ogre with a bow is NOT a Hun.

Magick, copying an entire dialog, and posting a one liner after each point is not constructive. But thanks for the burgers and the shake. :D

Im thinking he is refering to some obscured cabad ability we are not supused to discuss.

The monk you are discriving Crypt, is just the Cleric class Half Healer half Paladin and bard. Well ok, perhaps not bard.

Now on eastern thing, ninjas are more of a western thing than eastern thing.

As they are a mith created by Hollywood.

Monks are a diferent thing, as they always have a line of Martial Artists, and the Shaolin Temple thing.

Blademaster are pure samuray rip off, and you can find them on Wheel of Time series books.

But i do not understand why we have to restrict us to pure "western mythology", i mean.

And who ever created ninja/monks created a nice thing.

You can see Monks representing the strinking fighting arts.

And the Ninjas the grapling one, With grapple, push, strangle.

Witch i always thought should be on a monk.

That, and the holocaust never happened. It was created by Hollywood as well.

I'm just teasing you, Mya. However, Ninjas were not created by hollywood. Perhaps the popularized vision of what we think the Ninja are today were, however, I assure you, they did exist.

And again, I'm not saying we need to limit the MUD to western civilization. But I still don't think Ninjas fit in with the current MUD landscape. But, you know, that's just my opinion (as if it mattered ;) ).
