Mudder
So i'm in the library with my laptop trying to conncet to FL. I try to whip out my zMUD, not connecting. I even tried telnet, not working. I'm assuming there is a firewall of some sort or something? I'm not a "real" computer nerd, so any help is appreciated! Crucial
Nerd Have you tired to close your firewall? Im not a REAL computer nerd anyways. Which im pretty happy about.
Mudder
Any blocking the mud is not from my computer, its the internet connection over here. Can I turn off "their" firewall?
Crypticant
You CAN'T turn off their firewall unless you are an administrator. You CAN use a tunneling program to escape, but I wouldn't recommend it, as it tends to throw up a lot of red flags. I didn't suggest this, but see: Firewall Tunneling, Port Tunneling. Chayesh
Most likely their firewall has closed the port through which FL connects. Make sure you're comp hasn't closed the port also. You can also try the java client that either MudMagic or TMC has...I forget which. People who had connect troubles in the past have been able to use that by going to one of the two and using the Java Telnet Client to get to FL. Chayesh
I should have been more precise. Go to our listing on MudMagic. Click on Java Connect in the upper right hand corner of our listing. A couple more windows will open and voila.
Mudder
Thanks! So while im trying out this java thing, i'm worried that it will suck... Sorta like telnet does. So, i'm interested about tunneling. I'd love to rock my zMUD and use all the lovely triggers(color highlights) and aliases I have. My PK would suffer horribly otherwise and being in the library with the laptop is all I will have for internet in the next two weeks. My move-out date on my old lease and move-in date for my new apartment left me homeless for 2 weeks, so i'm with the girlfriend, not wanting to let her know im a dork Soo.. Is tunneling illegal? Can they catch me? I give the people at the front desk nothing when I come in. So they have no clue who I am. And the library is a decent size, with many computers. So since i'm using a laptop, will these red flags be easy to pin on me? Can(would) the administrator do anything to my computer after realizing what i'm doing? Lethereal
Geek Freak Hey! There are some girls out there that love dorks! I am one of those, maybe it's because I'm a bit of a dork myself...but I'm perfectly happy with my former God of Chaos dork (though I really prefer the term geek...) There's probably a dork/geek lover out there for every one of you. I know we're rare, but we do exist!
Crypticant
Tunneling in itself is not exactly illegal. Generally, the content of what most tunnelers are bringing back is. Tunneling is not an endeavor for a layman. It requires some measure of technical skill and knowing what you are doing in order to not get caught. Chances are, they won't know you're doing it, because most libraries don't have a sysadmin watching like a hawk. But if they do and he's watching a packet monitor, it will look real fishy if all of a sudden they see all these packets streaming in from an unauthorized port. That's all I'll say on it, because I don't want to lend the idea any more thought than that. However, you can, as they say "STFW", and find out all you want about it. Pali
(though I really prefer the term geek...) As do I. It sounds less... insulting. Plus, it's not a whale's penis.
Grumpy
Most probably you are behind a http firewall like me, your best bet is to ask the computer helpdesk whether there is a way to access telnet. In my case I use Cisco VPN to connect to the MUD using ZMud. If you are in Uni, then most probably there is a way to telnet since a lot of research stuff is stored there. If you're still a high school dude then you will have to settle with portforwarding.
Mudder
Nope, im in college, over here in Florida(USA). Honestly, i'm not a dork... On the outside An old friend introduced me to muds in middle school, and after he finally got me hooked, its been a dark secret ever since. I swear i'm cool! lol. Anyway. I'll see what can be done about all this crap. Java didn't work.. Is that possibly because I have mozilla? Should I download explorer again? Ugh! I hope I don't get rare-purged, heh. the Dude
zmud actually has built-in support for basically all proxy types. enter this one as a WWW proxy and try it out: 24.111.158.71 port 3128 here's a page with working proxies that gets updated every 3 hours: http://www.checker.freeproxy.ru/checker/last_checked_proxies.php you might have to use a proxy on port 80 if the system you're on is very restrictive (sounds like it is) i think Princeton has a whole network of http proxies, i'm gonna try to track them down for you edit: they do, it's called codeen, but doesn't seem to work through zmud. pity because i got a 28ms ping from the first one i tried
the Dude
as a matter of fact, i can't get zmud to work with http proxies at all i wonder if normal http proxies even allow you to specify the port to connect to???? i'm starting to think they only accept a hostname/webpage
Grumpy
Java won't work, since the whole concept of a http firewall is that it only allows http traffic (website like info) in. You can use port-forwarding services, they work by bouncing telnet data to you as http data, but since they require a remote server to work, you will probably have to pay for such a service. The easiest way is to use VPN if your college has it installed. But good luck, I know how frustrating it can be because for a time I had the same problem and had to mud in a net cafe, all the while getting strange looks from the people all around me playing games like counterstrike.
