MeleeCrazy
I've kept my mouth shut, to see where this thread goes. But I'll open it now, to make a point. There are portals to all of these places. Want to learn where they are? I'll give you a hint. It starts with "U", and ends with "nderdark". You can reach the central square of Marak in approximately... thirty rooms, from the central square of Val Miran. That's no farther than the central commons of Rheydin. I was waiting for someone to say it. I think the protals would be helpful for a lowbie...or a newb, I myself barely use protals....and when I do it's cus I don't like using the same routes over and over, swithces things up a bit. I don't think there is a real need for it....but it would make things a little more convenient, but do we really want conveniece...? Learning the lands is an essential part of the game...if you can just protal everwhere, it kinda defeats the purpose of all the inbetween areas. Your just skipping over all that stuff that someone worked hard to build.
goldbond
portals have advantages and have an impact beyond how fast you can personally travel to and from any 2 points. nothing profound, but they would change player behavior and patterns. Nightmare_from_hell
Has anyone played Elder Scrolls III? When I first started playing that game I only used the portals. When I finally said forget it then returned to the game a couple months later I walked between all the spots and I gained so much more knowledge, wares, skill, etc. Transfer this to FL and you have the same situation. Portals to main cities: Rheydin, Miruvhor, and Val Miran. Want to get to another place, find a path to walk. Multiple ways to get to multiple places, now go find them! Aulian
There are 3 routes to Marak. Not our fault if you guys all choose to take the longest one Amen. Also I find it quicker to run from Val Miran to Muri then to portal (ofcourse not if the portal works on the first hour change,) and the rest of you are just lazy, if we going to have portals everywhere why not reduce the amount of MV gained each level to like 5 0r 6 instead of 10-

I dont think the portal idea is a goody.

Deykari
I'm still not convinced. The good thing about the three portals we have now, between the main three towns, is that the towns are close. The portals can help for quick transfer between these short distances if you need a spot of rest, or even for newer players who want to get somewhere. But even then, the three towns are close enough that new players can learn to navigate the routes between towns to eventually get used to running. There are caravans to help with this too. Having extra portals to lead to these faraway places removes that sense of Aabahran's scale as you can be at distant places in a few ticks. With the towns that ARE far away and a little trickier to get to, new players could grow dependant on these portals as opposed to struggling to learn the routes to the more distant towns. And again, I don't think that there should be a convenient way to get to these towns. The portals we have now link towns that are a short-walk away; If you think about it, with the exception of Val Miran - Miruvhor, it takes roughly the same amount of time to run from main-town to main-town as it would if you used the portal (give or take a tick or so due to the randomness of the portal timer). And of course, there is a slightly less obvious problem with having a portal at one of the mentioned towns. I hate knowing what I want to say, but not having the ability to be able to get my point across how I want it putting across, with words. F-3000
Deykari, it's related to quest(s) or cabal(s), right?
Deykari
Heh, if you're asking that question because of the last line in my previous about me not being able to get my point across, I'm not talking about because of it being confidential information, just talking in general about how I lack the ability to explain things in the way I want to try and get them across. Whenever I try to talk about something, most of the time I know what I want to say, I just don't know how to say it right. And if you're knowledgable on your Aabahran Geography, just think about how a Marak portal could provide an advantage to certain people and a disadvantage to others. Crypticant
There's a reason Marak is remote. Ogres don't like tourists.
Iusedtobesomebody
anyone who remembers gates with no lag will realize why no more gates exists. try chasing something who knows what they're doing and are on the other side of the world in under 10 seconds... learn to walk the land, and then do it until you can get from anywhere to anywhere blindfolded. Crucial
Wow, that sounds boring. Walking anywhere blindfolded. You guys really put way to much time into a game.. I know that nobody is the same, but I cant see myself putting that much time into a game anymore, that keeps changing. When I first started playing this mud, I didnt know what I was even looking at a couple of friends told me abou tit and since they didnt want to see a movie, cause they were to busy playing "MUD" I had to do something to cure my boredom. I didnt know up from down, and I was reading EVERYTHING. ..sad I know. I learned the mud verywell and could go from point to point fast, and if blinded I could get out of the situation and to a hide-away fairly quickly. This was back when the conclave was starting to be known, and people were starting to talk about it on the original BOARDS. But I am not putting soo much time into a game I play for free that changes (which is cool) more often than I would like. Not everyone has to agree with what im saying, or dislike it for that matter, But I hope you all agree that its only a game...work isnt fun and a game is played to be fun..I understand about reward for hard work..I got a great job that rewards hard work...BUT it takes too much effort I mean...trying getting cabaled and such. I have been cabaled with ONE character, one. I guess that means I aint the cabaled type. Anyways, I just got high and yeah...Im going to go have some fun. Pali
I personally see no need to spend time specifically learning how to run around blind. That'll come naturally as you play more and more. I never focused on learning to go around blind, but it came fairly naturally after I'd been playing for a few months. Now I can run from one end of the game to the other without hitting a wall at times.

Iusedtobesomebody
i can understand the feeling of "don't make it work, keep it fun". i honestly do. BUT, with that being said, i still encourage people to know the land. there is a lot of advantage to terrain, and not all of it pertains to the PK aspect of the game. simply knowing where things are make you a little bit better as a character. i love to frustrate people by disappearing when i lead them on a merry chase. i can only imagine them beating their keyboards in frustration. *shrug* to each his own, i guess. Might be fine to post too though. Who knows? I certaintly don't. Dey
goldbond
dude this matter is totally settled x10... i liked the idea on its face when it was first brought up, but everyone who objected gave reasons that far outweigh any advantage of a new portal. i thought maybe new portals would encourage player presence in other cities more often, but this is very little benefit compared to the down sides everyone already mentioned in this thread.
